Floyd Mayweather reveals why Amir Khan never had a hope of fighting him

Why take a $60-70 million fight when I could take a $300 million fight? Also when he called me out another time, I was getting ready for Canelo [Alvarez]. Once again, why take a $60-70 million fight when I made $100 million?

Didn't Floyd Mayweather have a deal with Showtime where he received a guaranteed $32 million per bout, plus a percentage of the PPV revenue?

So it might have been a money motivated decision, since the likes of Maidana ($3m) and Berto ($4m) probably would have requested half or even a third of the sums that Khan would have expected in order to face Mayweather.

With Mayweather’s guaranteed purse being so high and Khan not being a big enough star in the US, certainly not in the realms of the likes of Canelo, Chavez Jr., Cotto and Pacquiao, it might not have been equitable to meet the Brits payday demands if the resulting estimated PPV buy-rate was deemed insufficient.

I suspect that the only reason why Canelo-Khan was made, was due to the fact that the Mexican’s purse for that fight was nowhere near as big as the sums that Mayweather commanded in 2014.

I have to disagree here. Khan is a bigger star in the States than Maidana.. The two Maidana fights averaged around 900k buys. May-Khan would have done more. But I do agree he would likely have asked for around $10+

Perhaps I’ve not made myself clear, so I’ll try to rephrase my original sentiments.

Showtime were losing money on the majority of PPV’s that they staged as part of Mayweather’s six fight deal, which was primarily caused by Floyd’s onerous $32m purse guarantee per bout.

The reason that Stephen Espinoza signed Money May from HBO, was due to their long-term objective of securing the right to televise the Mayweather-Pacquiao super-fight.

Whilst Amir Khan is almost certainly a bigger star in the US than the likes of Maidana and Berto, his fame wouldn’t have brought enough extra money to the table to compensate for the losses that Showtime were already realising.

So if Showtime were going to continue making losses to televise Floyd's fights, there was less financial risk for them to sanction a cheaper opponent than approving a bigger name expensive fighter that may not have necessarily resulted in many more PPV buys.

If Floyd’s contractual purse guarantee would have been in region of $15m instead of $32m, then I suspect that we would have seen a Mayweather-Khan bout in 2014.

I mean Floyd should have fought Khan instead of Andre Berto!!!! ... Khan was a Hell of a lot easier pickings then Keith Thurman or Kell Brook at that time... Thruman just whipped a kid who flattened Khan -- and Errol Spence quickly smashed a skinny kid who fought an even fight with a wrestling, running Khan.
