How does W4rren get it all so wrong?

Post by tobyh5 »

What does W4rren do so wrong that there is no sizzle in his promotions? He announces a few cracking fights and no one cares, there is hardly any national press coverage and no clamour of interest from fans. Jesus, he even has Floyd Mayweather in the UK and still it is a damp squib. Matchroom seem to make everything pop, explode and seem exciting.

People can talk about which one is putting on quality and which one should have the better following all day, but the reality is that they are salesman and I was once told a good salesman sells the sizzle not the sausage - meaning it is not what you are selling but how you package and sell it.

Best sausage ever made has this poster at an event - "Come to my stand and buy this sausage I have cooked"
Worst sausage in the world at same event has this poster - "World's greatest sausage, packed full of the freshest, meatiest ingredients and now being expertly cooked in our specially made griddle to be hot, sizzling and juicy".

W4rren just seems like a boring, monotone, whinging old dinosoar and his events are blue stripe Tesco Value compared to Matchrooms M&S finest food, and I say this really disliking the smug Hearn, they just seem to nail it. Hell if W4rren put on AJ v Klit, it would probably be in front of 9,000 at the Copperbox

Because nobody outside hardcore, post-on-internet fans have allegedly. Eddie Hearn is on Sky Sports. Sky Sports are going to be able to market better when they have a larger audience. (And a 24 hour news channel that can hype their events.)

If you're Warren, and you go; "Look at this cracking fight. It's only a channel that about three dozen people have, by the way...." It's not going to sound exciting to the masses, even if it is.

Sky sports is the golden ticket, I know BT have a decent subscription but nearly every pub has Sky Sports News ticking over in the bacground with Joshua and Brooks mugs popping up every 10 minutes. Sky Sports news allocate a ridiculous amount of time to Sky Sports Boxing when they have an upcoming fight too.

Nearly every one of my mates turns on their TV and goes straight to sky sports news too. Theres no doubt Matchroom have the perfect platform to generate numbers. Fwank is gonna struggle!

Banbury Bangers are nice. Also there is a shop in Melton Mowbury (down near Rutland) that have some really nice Linconshire ones.

On a cheaper scale Aldi cumberland sauasges are ok but really need to be grilled.

I quite like the Tesco finest pork and apple ones. Have that with some 1/2 sweet potato 1/2 white potato mash, shredded cabbage with vegetable gravy and we are golden. Mmmmmmmm

The up-coming Manchester card from Wazza is better rounded than anything Matchroom have done in recent years. In that there's decent fights right down the card, rather than three at a push on most Matchroom ones.

Provided it doesn't completely fall apart, as is prone to happening.

Which is my exact point. Quality cards or at least superior cards for depth and more even fights but they are struggling to gain any following or interest. Zero buzz. Hearn sells sh*t as gold while W4rren is packaging gold as sh*t

BT also appears a bit second tire. Sky always seem to get the pick of the football matches. Sky show domestic cricket and BT get the stuff in Australia. Sky have PDC darts and BT have BDO. It's not a great model to be associated with what 'casual sports fans' view as the secondary deal.

(To clarify, some lunatic on here sent me a PM asking what my job was at Sky/Matchroom. I don't work for them or anyone associated before he starts again!)

The mistake I think is that the boxers themselves aren't guided in a way to increase profile. Someone on here said something about a fighter who didn't even have any social media platform. It sounds trivial, (and to old-school types presumably sounds meaningless), but that is what you need to do these days to get noticed. Flanagan is the perfect example. I think the vast majority of people who follow boxing think he'd beat Crolla. They, (as in Flanagan himself, Warren, BT) should be screaming for that fight. But nobody knows who Flanagan is.

Like everything promotion moves on and Warren seems a little stuck in the past.

People want a mix though don't they. Chisora v Whyte, Yafai v Concepcion and Burton v Buglioni were three cracking fights for a Joshua undercard with some names in mismatch fights alongside them.

I know it seems odd to some but the man in the street would rather see Joshua waste some bloke and sit through a few fights like those above than watch two fellas he has never, ever heard of in a fight where either could win.

You're right man, it's sad to see. World champs like Flanagan and Saunders get nowhere near enough ticket sales or media attention.
Even Liam Smith hasn't had that much national promotion despite facing one of the top named fighters in the world.
He'll miss a trick if Warrington, Yarde and Dubois don't come off for him, they'll help with ticket sales and casual interest, so need to be pushed to stardom. Start with one star and more will be born from the aftermath.

Good point on the social media. In this day and age, the boxers should know this stuff. Bang on Instagram stuff, twitter shares etc and get a little bit more lively. It is all well and good hoping just being a good fighter should be enough to get the rewards, but that noble stance only goes so far. One must live in the real world and work with it. You need to become a personality. Boxers get paid from the number of people they can attract to pay for them to appear (either directly through the turnstiles or indirectly of viewing figures on TV to get sponsors and advertisers interested). If you want to earn the dollars, realise what is attracting the punters, recognise the demand and start selling it.

Warren just doesn't have any interesting fighters. The last show he did with buzz was the Fury/Chisora, Saunders/Eubank bill. Of those four fighters, the only one he has on his books these days in Saunders who is not an exciting fighter and doesn't have a likeable personality.

Mostly to do with the Sky platform as mentioned above, and also the fact that Matchroom have the most well known fighters/fights (even if not the best or most exciting).

The second point comes from having a contract with Sky (the first point).

Most of Matchroom's current, well known, fighters were once signed to FW. It's all to do with the TV.

Hearn is a better promoter, and has a bigger platform? Big whoop.

Let people trip over themselves for a retweet and the privilege of rimming Eddie as Joshua knocks out at a tomato can. I am more than happy to pay the same amount to watch a genuinely stacked card of fights that could go either way, in the company of actual fans, not just the Cocaine and Espadrilles gang that litter Matchroom shows.

Social media presence is really where it's hurting the BN and bunny stable of fighters. They don't seem to be attracting anywhere near the interest that Matchroom do. It might be little things like Hearn liking the odd twitter comment or replying direct to someone every now and then (purely as a cynical move to 'interact' with fans) whereas bunny would probably end up issuing lawsuits.

I'm a very casual observer of UFC these days and i know that Conor McGregor is a good fighter. However, unlike a lot of people who casually observe UFC, i will not threaten to have you shot for suggesting that McGregor isn't the greatest fighter ever to grace the octagon. What he has done though is to use social media as a direct vehicle to his fanbase, get the fights that suit him because of it and in the process make a truck load of money for himself.

I think a lot has to do with the fact that alot of people got absolutly sick and tired of, mismatches , cancelations , pullouts , TBA fighters , record padding , ect ect ect , That they clammered for someone else to come and take over , when he did ( Hearn , ) He was like a breath of fresh air .. But Warwen lost a customer base and he's struggling to get it back ... Hearn on the other hand is having great success ,,, FOR NOW , but people already seem to be getting sick of his sesire to be more famous and a bigger celebrity than his boxers ,, Jeez he even has his own television crew , Kugan and co , travelling around the country with him ,,, He gets them an interview for every 5 they do with him . Give it a few years and he'll be knocked of his perch ,
