I am, however, pondering on buying a little place in SOHO. Since I first came down to London to live about 25 years ago, I have always wanted to live on Frith St or Dean St.

Used to drink in Bernard's old local, on Charlotte Street, damned if I can remember the name of it now. Used to be Dylan Thomas' old boozer too.

Ah, a hoxtonite, that explains it all now Maxie, the cravatte, the fine wines....do you perchance have a goatee beard and a beret worn at a jaunty angle?

French House? Coach & Horses?

So many down there. There are some spectacular crawls to be had round there. The Sun & Thirteen Cantons, Old coffee House, Sir John Snow, Shaston Arms is one of my favourites ( on a quiet saturday afternoon when it is not full of suits )

No beret. Do have a goatee and rather fetching it is too. Gives the ladies something to hang on to don't you know?

Good luck- I'm moving into a new ( small ) office tomorrow in Soho Square - rent? Only £6,000 per month. So you'll find me in the Toucan most afternoons

And defintely tomorrow.

The Dog & Duck on Frith is one of the best locals round here.

In fact someone just told me the crown and 2 chairman on dean st is closing next week and giving away free beer....

Yeah it's class, plus has a small downstairs bar where you can hide out from the boss all afternoon. Will be packed tomorrow for st paddys no doubt.

G Bernard's local was the coach and horses, with Norman the most miserable landlord in the west end.

I always thought the Toucan was a shithole, as are most of the boozers around the west end, tiny, dingy, overpacked, stinking of stale beer, smokey and uncomfortable.

I fail to see what is so appealing about the Toucan, used to drink in there after work sometimes.

Not that fond of the Toucan although, used to go there for the "irish tapas" every now and again. used to do very very good oysters

I used to drink in The Pillars of Hercules behind Foyles all the time, but that is a shithole too.

The Dive Bar on gerrard st was tops, but that closed a couple of years ago

I have to say now, my fave place ( apart from my club ) is The Cork & Bottle

If you are a wine fan, this place is a must

it looks like nothing and is in a dreaful location ( just by Leicester Sq ) but it has the BEST wine list in London bar none. Does a decent burger too.

Yeah the best thing about the Toucan really is in the summer, standing outside watching the world go by, with the green of Soho square right by.
Too many airport lounge bars around these days...

The Blue Posts are good - there's four of them in Soho, and each one is meant to mark the four corners of Soho.

The Ship on Wardour street is good too.

as my comunictions with slapsie (i dont know as much as he I add) and James can tell you my wine rack is usually fully stocked mostly red.

Must say a nice robust Pinot Noir is good too, I find I tend to like very heavy varieties of wine, the sort of stuff which makes you feel like you are dying the next morning if you overdo it.
