You wonder how we all got sucked in to believing he was heir apparent. This was all before he had turned pro

''Later that year Price made it to the finals of the Tammer Tournament in Finland, but he was stopped by Bermane Stiverne.''

''At the Strandya Cup in Bulgaria, he was stopped by Ukrainian Vyacheslav Glazkov, ''

''Price captained the 2006 Commonwealth Games boxing team in Melbourne and achieved a gold medal there, beating Indian Varghese Johnson in the process, despite being knocked down three times''

''David Price was to meet Italian world champion Roberto Cammarelle, a bout in which the referee stopped in the second round''

Very much so. His despatching of domestic also rans hoodwinked many. Though I remember Boxing News (apologies I can't remember the writer) observing in his report of the Skelton fight that Price had looked wary under Matt's brief attack and that that was something to consider in the future.

Not many!

He also got dropped by a black guy representing Wales in the 4 Nations, as well as an Eastern European fellow in a 2004 tournament. I pointed out all this stuff out, and there were others who did the same, but a lot of people dismissed it because he was young at those times and 'it's just the amateurs!!'.

Yeah, with hindsight, it does seem obvious now.

Ya, I mean if it's just a knockdown or two it's not really a huge deal, but when it happens over and over there is good reason to worry.

I'm still hanging onto the thread of hope that he will make the greatest comeback of all time :bag:

He needs a BIG name trainer who can give him confidence, I'm trying not to state the obvious but I don't mean someone to teach him to box, I just mean a worldwide name whose "Name" alone can make Price feel 20 feet tall

Heir to the Joshua throne you mark my words :D

Was AJ ever stopped as an amateur? How many times was he on the deck? Whyte had him over didn't he?

To my knowledge he was stopped once (Mihai Nistor) and down once (Whyte), though Whyte was just his 3rd contest.

He's taken a good left hook from Whyte on the point of the chin in the second round of their pro fight. This somewhat answered some questions about his chin.

He ended the round throwing punches back, regrouped and won every round there after! He boxed poorly that night overall, allowed himself to get dragged in to Whyte's fight but eventually settled and beat him comfortably.

I don't think he has a cast iron chin but in that fight, shipping that shot seemed to sort him out a bit. I thought he reacted well after the initial wobble. He certainly came firing back, almost instantly. Plenty of dog in him, something else Price seriously lacked/lacks.

I think in a rematch he'd knock Whyte out within 3/4 rounds.

I have watched the Whyte left hook many times and it was a wicked shot. Joshua took it well considering.

He might not have the beard of Larry Holmes, but he aint no glass chin either

AJ is nowhere near as chinny as Price, but he isn't granite chinned from what I've seen.

I don't think Joshua has a particularly weak chin but I agree with Mickey that Whyte isn't the biggest puncher of all time and he wobbled AJ.

Whyte was whacking Chisora like no-one's business but he didn't wobble quite like AJ did. Compare that to what Haye did to Delboy.

I think a motivated Wlad (whose own chin is underrated) should spark AJ.

The Skelton fight told me everything I needed to know about the man. If a 40-something British/European level fighter well passed his prime could actually force him to the ropes, make him seem frozen under pressure.... I knew the moment a guy who had no fear, was calm and cool under pressure, who could take the shots/roll with the punches.... Price would be exposed as nothing more than a mechanical tinman. :box:

If he can still pull the trigger. One thing in Wlad's favour, is that Joshua's not exactly nimble.

Cassius Clay was dropped by Sonny Banks and a 13 stone albeit heavy puncher in Henry Cooper.

Fury was dropped by Pakjic and Steve Cunningham neither particularly hard hitting cruiserweights.

Delahoya was dropped on a number of occasions by mid-level fighters as a super featherweight.

The key is how quickly you recover, survival instincts and coming out with the victory, you could even argue coming through a crisis at a lower level is a benefit for when you get in trouble in the deeper waters.

There were lots of people doubting Price's chin on here.

I know that because sat next to my Dad at the first Thompson fight (he's not a big boxing fan but enjoys it when it's on so I'd taken him to his first live fight) I was explaining that I'd been reading there was a lot of questions of whether he could take a punch as he'd been knocked down lots as an amateur.

Literally within the next five seconds, the Tiger clipped him on the back of the ear and that was that.

Yep,there were plenty of us on here saying Price was well chinny long before TT clattered him. The footage of his amateur ko's showed he had a chin made of the finest porcelain.
