Mayweather Explains Why He's TBE, Better Than Past Greats
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been calling himself "TBE [The Best Ever]" for several years. Mayweather, 40-years-old, retired from the sport in September 2015 after winning a dominating twelve round unanimous decision over former champion Andre Berto.
He walked away with his undefeated record intact, with 49 wins and 26 of them by knockout.
During his ongoing tour of UK, Mayweather discussed the subject of calling himself "TBE."
In the past, Mayweather has received a lot of criticism from historians for his claim of being the best fighter in the history of the sport.
While many historians have a high regard for Mayweather, they rate other boxers well ahead of him because some of them had far more professional bouts.
“When we talk about these champions, legendary fighters, we talk about how they have 100 and something fights, 100 and something victories - but when you look at the history books I still beat more world champions than any fighter in history. I respect these fighters because these fighters are the fighters that paved the way for me to be where I’m at, but there’s no fighter in boxing that accomplished what I accomplished at all. You can go back as far as you want to go back," Mayweather said.
Mayweather win over Berto, lifting his record to 49-0, which identical to heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano. But Mayweather believes there is a big difference between his record and Marciano's record, and he also holds himself above Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, and even Joe Louis.
“If we go back and look at Marciano’s record, he fought a bunch of ducks. Ali, he never beat Ken Norton..... this is the truth. There’s nothing cool about laying on the ropes, taking punishment - and being glorified for that [when discussing Ali's 'rope a dope' tactics]. If another fighter is known as the greatest fighter, they say, ‘oh he’s the greatest.’ Well, then I’m greater in other places. I’m the greatest business man."
"I’m going to always love Muhammad Ali, always love Sugar Ray Robinson, always love Sugar Ray Leonard, always love every legendary champion... Joe Louis and the list goes on and on - but one thing I’m not going to say is that they are better than me [because] that’s not true.”

..speaking of his own greatness/superiority is a sure sign of the inferiority complex..
Re: Mayweather Explains Why He's TBE, Better Than Past Greats
I watched that and was pissed no one pointed out the obvious.
He has beaten more world champions yes, but thats a twisted statistical fact. He is active in an era of 17 weight classes and 4 champions per division plus interim, super, regular champions.
Previous champions, (pre-80's more so) come from an era of a lot less guys around who had held a belt that you could beat.
How about someone bored goes out and adds up how many champions there were for maybe five years before some of these guys where champion and up to their retirement and calculate what percentage of all champs existing in that timescale they beat. Do the same to Floyd. Calculate how many people have claimed to be a champion in that timescale and work out what percentage he beat. I am guessing his figure is not so commanding then.

I've never heard anyone other than Floyd say he is the best ever, he doesn't get to decide that, the public do.

One thing I have to give him, he's a million miles greater than Marciano.
Re: Mayweather Explains Why He's TBE, Better Than Past Greats
If you say something enough, history sometimes remembers that, and with the 49-0 has data to back it up. When the people who actually watched his fights, knew the background, are gone- he will probably be remembered as tbe

Re: Mayweather Explains Why He's TBE, Better Than Past Greats
Floyd is not right about being the greatest,
but he is right about how boxing fans have come to view fighters of the past.
Most of any past fighter's 100 wins were against trash opponents, for a paycheck.
Many of these trash wins came after these fighters were already established champions.
If Roy Jones Jr or Floyd Mayweather Jr fought 50 more opponents ranked lower than 30,
they would have 50 more wins and 50 more knockouts on their record.
In fact, Floyd, at 40+, could fight one of these guys per week in 2018 and at the end of his year,
his record would be 101(72) - 0 - 0
We focus too much on numbers these days without any analysis of context.

Wilder with hes 38 wins and 37 knock outs will soon surpass him.
It is not about the record.. It is who you beat and when. Floyd does not have that many wins over prime ATG opponents.

Then neither does Marciano and Holmes and a bunch of other dudes.Heretic wrote:Wilder with hes 38 wins and 37 knock outs will soon surpass him.

I saw Manny look exceptionally sharp against Bradley.
Most of this is about Floyd hate.
If Floyd were a British white man, he would be lauded as the greatest athlete ever.
Because he would have a strong culture of support behind him.

People seem to forget he beat ATG guys when he WASNT in prime which is impressive as well. To fight elite guys dominated when ur not in YOUR prime.Heretic wrote:Wilder with hes 38 wins and 37 knock outs will soon surpass him.

Re: Mayweather Explains Why He's TBE, Better Than Past Greats
God I hate that argument of I beat more champions than them. Most of the guys he is in competition with were around in the days of 8 division with one champion per division. Currently without including bullshit regular, super and interim champion there is 4 champions in 17 divisions, that's 68 champs. I saw a photo of SRR the other day, when he was 22 he had 49 wins and had beaten 7 HOFers.

He openly admitted that his whole spiel was a rip-off of 50s wrestler, Gorgeous George.
With Mayweather, you get the impression that he absolutely believes it.
Re: Mayweather Explains Why He's TBE, Better Than Past Greats
If Mayweather says so then it must be true musn'i it?
I mean, where else would you go for a truly objective unbiased opinion, other than the great man himself?
One thing''s for sure is inside the ring the man showed class. Making a claim such as this demonstrates an absence of it elsewhere.

Floyd didn't lose to Castillo ever. Check the scores in their 2 fights. 6 different judges and all had Floyd winning. Everybody knows Floyd won the rematch by a much bigger score than they gave him. Everybody knows the judges had Floyd a clear winner in the first fight by 4 and 5 points each. Turn off the sound and watch the 5th round carefully and score it. The punch stat guy scored punches to the back that were after the bell and other Castillo punches that didn't come close to scoring.. and he didn't score punches that Mayweather landed..Jip wrote:ali lost to norton, right, officialy he won, but trues is he lost to norton.

The whole broadcast was affected by the blind and biased Lederman and the out-to-lunch punch stat guy... The judges don't hear the telecast OR punch stats numbers -- so their scores weren't affected by incompetent BS counters and they largely agreed by margin and rounds that Floyd clearly won.
Ali didn't beat Norton in any fight.. Norton landed the cleaner and more effective shots in all 3 fights.. There are plenty of bogus decisions in Boxing to be sure -- but Mayweather didn't benefit from any of them.. The worst I've seen were Lewis-Holyfield 1... Pacquiao-Bradley 1... Hagler-Antuofermo 1... Whitaker-Chavez... Lara-Williams... Lara-Canelo... Lomachenko-Salido... and Ali-Norton 2 and 3... In none of those boxing matches did the judges' scores correspond to the clean and effective punches landed by each combatant.

Re: Mayweather Explains Why He's TBE, Better Than Past Greats
Mayweather didn't officially beat Castillo, but the majority of people who saw it thought Castillo deserved the win. I've watched it twice and once had Castillo winning 115-111, the other time 114-112. The judges were clearly biased towards Floyd in that fight, the wideness of their cards is evidence of that. Floyd did clearly win the rematch, but the scorecards were actually closer for that fight, perhaps in reaction to the injustice of the first fight.Kalan wrote:Floyd didn't lose to Castillo ever. IMO, Bradley has a better shout for winning the first Pacquiao fight (I had it 115-113 to Pac Man) than Mayweather for winning the first Castillo fight, same goes for Lara-Canelo (I had a draw) Lomachenko-Salido and Ali-Norton 2. That's boxing though, isn't it, scoring is subjective and different judges have different preferences. Simply asserting that our own scorecard is 'correct' is just another in a sea of opinions. That said, clear robberies do happen and I'll agree that Lewis-Holyfield 1, Whitaker-Chavez, Lara-Williams and Ali-Norton 3 were robberies.
