Young was slick and quick -- but Foreman almost got Jimmy out in the 7th.. I think the perfectly trained Foreman who showed up for Frazier 1 would have had the sharpness and gas in the tank to finish Young off right there.. I also think Foreman deteriorated a bit as the Heavyweight Champion because of all the women who flocked to him.. And he wasn't a real disciplined eater, just like Jimmy Young wasn't a very disciplined trainer..

Holmes was pretty disciplined for a long time before he started to fall off the rails a bit for a period.. It gets too easy after a while.. And when Holmes did fall off his defensive skills were still so great he gave anybody a tough time well into his 40's... Young didn't do anything approaching that.

You can always say, "What if this guy lived up to his potential? Then What would happen?" ... You know what? ... Very few of us live up to our potential 100%.

- Jimmy might have held a title in a weaker era, but was horribly out muscled and punched against Norton and Foreman, and off course no way the suits are gonna give him a decision over the cash cow that Ali had become. He didn't really beat Ali, but rather in an insecure fashion pittypatted for the first 8 rounds as Ali oddly did next to zero. Most refs would have DQed Ali at that point for not fighting, but then Young clowned a frustrated Ali who proved his offensive limitations at that stage of the game. The low point came when Ali squatted on the ropes to rope a dope Young, just pitiful. Had Jimmy been properly awarded the title, probably he would have self imploded as he did anyway, but could at least have more pride in his achievements.

Cosell proved in the Foreman fight to be Foreman's worst enemy with the negative commentary. Ali was always impressed with Cosell's vocabulary and sticking up for Ali even if they had a rivalry, but Foreman saw right through the Cosell flimflammery and by that time had grown surly with the incessant stupidity and repetition of press questions. Foreman cut Young off and brutalized him all night save the last round when he was exhausted from chasing and chased into a right hand counter. Jimmy backed up Norton now and again, but overall proved inept at solving Norton's tricky defense. The Norton fight was the only correct boxing decision with boxing going 1-2 with Young against this trio. Boxing is the worst sport in history for these sorts of transgressions.

Jimmy also a testament to the mismanagement of his career early on when as a novice he was matched with the experienced Shavers though he recovered well enough to last the distance until Cooney. End of the day, Jimmy lacked the power, stylistic offense, and that extra X factor needed to become a star though he always had his avid Philly fans.

Are you seriously saying that Foreman should have got the decision against Young? You have to be kidding.

I do know about Jimmy Young was that he gave The Greatest and Big George a boxing lesson.

In the 1950's he would have beaten Charles, Walcott, Marciano, Patterson, and Johansson with his size and skills ... Joshua would batter him out in a round.

So Young's defensive skills wouldn't allow him to last as long as Charles Martin? Ok,

Joshua is Martin's only loss... Just as Joshua is Breazeale's only loss... Joshua is Whyte's only loss... and Joshua is Cornish's only loss in 25 fights...

In Cornish's case, he's not serious about getting to the world level, with the caliber of opponents he's been fighting since the Joshua fight.. You have to take the sport seriously to be successful. He'd have to get out of Scotland where no Heavyweights of any talent exist.. Breazeale is still getting after it and so is Whyte.. Martin we'll have to see...but the man looks as flaky as Fury at this particular point.

Young was a serious professional, but he lacked discipline and drive.. He lost 4 of his next 5 fights after beating Foreman.. I can't conceive of Joshua losing to Ossie Oscasio who only had 11 fights.. Larry Holmes bullied Ocasio and knocked him down with a left jab before easily stopping the little tyke.

Maybe the only thing we agree on is that Joshua is potentially special, but he's always measured early. It's absurd how many miles more accomplished fighters you have him blasting out in a round when he doesn't do it to also-rans. Your clown antics are easy to toss back at you. Vitali Klitschko's weak blows couldn't floor Briggs but a dingaling man eviscerated him like a child!

Cornish's main problem is not how seriously he does or doesn't take boxing, it's that he's fvcking sh!t and anybody who knows boxing (outside of looking at his record) would know this.

And the only reason Martin has only one defeat is his putrid competition. Name one element of boxing he has ever shown competence in, against a competent opponent.

Don't you know Kalan boxed amateur and pro and trained hundreds of boxers. He can spot flaws in boxers that most people here will never see in a hundred years

If he says Charles Martin could do better than that chump Jimmy Young, then you'll just have to accept his expert opinion

Did I say that Jimmy Young was a chump??? ... Did I lie about him??? ... Did he have any personal problems like Tyson Fury???

There's a difference in saying a fine boxer who's a smallish feather hitter would get flattened by a brilliant boxer with a 100% KO record -- and calling him a chump... How long do you figure a guy Young's size who can't hit would last with a 6'6" X 245 boxer-puncher who's also a smashing KO hitter??? I was always impressed with Jimmy Young's boxing ability -- even though he came into the Foreman fight with 5 losses and lost 4 of his next 5 fights..

Vitali's blows weren't weak... Klitschko was 40 years old and Briggs went to the hospital with broken bones in his face.... he had 50 pounds of extra muscle versus Klitschko and didnt try to fight but to survive ...and he had a 25" neck... He was 228 versus Lewis and was knocked cold at that weight in 3 by the woeful Darrol Wilson.. Lewis didn't knock Briggs out... Briggs missed a big swing and fell down... Mills Lane thought that was ungainly so he stopped it.

Longer than a talentless 6'5" quitter, who came to quit and did quit and is a disgrace to the sport........ but still made it through the first round

Then quit

Okay that's fair... You think Young would have lasted a little longer than Martin lasted... I think he would have been gone in the 1st heat

It's a matter of styles...because with Young's lack of power and range even the very inept and physically weak tall boxer, Gerry Cooney, trashed Young. He pretty much beat Young up and made a real mess of him... Cooney wouldn't have made it through the 1st round with Josh either.

Youngs cut was from a Cooney thumb...there is a replay somewhere...think it has been deleted on youtube.. :maybe:

I've never seen a fighter look so good against good fighters, and so bad against bad fighters.

Jimmy Young is #1 Of All Time in that regard. And these fights were all in the 1974-1978 time frame.

Of course... He was too big for him. Charles fought most of his fights as a Middleweight and Light Heavyweight... Including his best ones.
