UK Lightweights
Watching Gamboa the other night I was thinking to myself that despite being past his best and not really a true lightweight according to the experts, he looked a class above our lads yet if you listen to FW and Eddie our lads are supposedly genuinely world class
I'm from Manchester and it's nice to see Flanagan and Crolla doing well but to my admittedly "casual" eye they don't look world class and their results kind of bear this out. Campbell looks very skilled but he's nearly 30 and he's beaten nobody either.
Would any of them trouble Gamboa let alone Mikey Garcia ? How would they fare against inexperienced slicksters like Easter and Verdejo ?

Good thread lad, it's a good question because despite all the champions we have, not many of them are fancied no.1's in their division. Politics have gotten Crolla a title, but by no means do I mean to degrade his class wins over Perez & Barroso.CaptainSpacerod wrote:Watching Gamboa the other night I was thinking to myself that despite being past his best and not really a true lightweight according to the experts, he looked a class above our lads yet if you listen to FW and Eddie our lads are supposedly genuinely world class

It's almost soul destroying to have someone as good as Flanagan in Britain, to then look at his fellow lightweights and see how much of a gulf in class could arise, certainly if he went in with Mikey Garcia. It's up to Crolla to show Linares that he and every other boxer in this country ain't to be messed with!
Some people don't like celebrating our overachieving champions like Bellew, Liam Smith etc.

Thing is, UK fighters have a big advantage because they can make money and achieve fame off limited talent. If they have the right people behind them and work hard enough, they don't need Gamboa level talent to do well for themselves.
It's funny when you look at someone as talented as Gamboa and he's probably not made much money or got as much out of boxing as someone like Crolla.

Re: UK Lightweights
Garcia would beat all the UK lightweights.
I think Flanagan and Crolla have a chance of beating Gamboa. It would take both to be at their best however.
All those listed above would beat Campbell.
On a lightweight tilt... Scott Cardle's gravy train to the British title is an absolute farce. I see the latest notices have it being continued with relative ease for him too. Barrett then Ritson. Does Campbell believe he's above this? They keep talking about Campbell v Cardle, but it doesn't seem like it's very close very soon.
Cheers,
Simon.

Definitely, boxing is massive in Britain, everyone knows talent doesn't amount to popularity, or the Rigo's of the world would be stars.TheLeprechaun wrote:Thing is, UK fighters have a big advantage because they can make money and achieve fame off limited talent. Sam Eggington is a great example of huge exposure.

Didn't Luke Campbell come out and say he wants the fight and Cardle is ducking?Stuffs wrote:Garcia would beat all the UK lightweights.

But surely he's mandatory! So Cardle would either have to fight him or vacate.
Re: UK Lightweights
Cardle/Gallagher/Hearn have said that Cardle wants to have his 3rd defence of the British to win it outright and then take on Luke Campbell. Absolutely no reason why Campbell can't be his 3rd defence, other than it being too difficult a fight and Cardle wanting a risk free fight instead.
Re: UK Lightweights
Cardle / Campbell could and should have been made ages ago but Hearn knows Cardle's limitations and wants to keep him as British champion for mid card filler with relatively straight forward defences. Yet more devaluing of the Lonsdale belt by the prick from BrentwoodElJefe wrote:Cardle/Gallagher/Hearn have said that Cardle wants to have his 3rd defence of the British to win it outright and then take on Luke Campbell. BBBofC have ordered winner of Cardle-Barrett to face Lewis Ritson.TheGingerBomber wrote:Didn't Luke Campbell come out and say he wants the fight and Cardle is ducking?Stuffs wrote:Garcia would beat all the UK lightweights.

I'm sure if a request is made for it to be Campbell instead it will get pushed through, but it's a pretty sh*tty order from BBBofC.

Doubt it. Ritson was due a eliminator but murray pulled out and no other eliminators were sent out. Only way wud b pay ritson off and guarantee him next shot. Guessing Campbell wud vacate straight away any way if he beat cardle

I don't think MR would have much bother paying Ritson. They'd make Campbell-Cardle a Saturday headliner in Hull.maley1984 wrote:Stuffs wrote:BBBofC have ordered winner of Cardle-Barrett to face Lewis Ritson.TheGingerBomber wrote:

I think both Flan and Crolla are bang ordinary by world class standards. Even though Crolla Linares was a close fight and the rematch may be even closer I think that's more to do with "styles make fights" than Crolla supposedly improving to world class.TheGingerBomber wrote:

It's a proper shame that Flan is fighting obscure fighters one after another in pretend world title fights rather than meeting Crolla in a real trade fight.

Re: UK Lightweights
That's what I'm getting at, they're good fighters but they aren't world class because of who's in front of them, Garcia & Linares. Garcia is heavy in people's p4p top ten & we all know how good Linares is. Gotta be said though, this division has some potential.CaptainSpacerod wrote:I think both Flan and Crolla are bang ordinary by world class standards. I think that's the plan all along having Flaningan lose his title to Vedejo in the US. Hahaha Verdejo is a hype job
Did you watch his last fight ? He was abolultely dire against a guy blasted out twice at the weight below.
So bad Bob Arum and his trainer said he won't be rushed to a title fight.
Re: UK Lightweights
Verdejo has nice talent, but he seems to struggle to put it all together. As mentioned, he looked poor last fight against someone bombed out early by Uchiyama and Berchelt down at 130, and he was hurt late in the fight.
He was starting to rack up lackluster showings before the accident as well, and he's beating many of his opponents in a less convincing manner than other fighters have beaten the same opposition.
At this point I'm not really seeing someone who is a foregone conclusion to beat Flanagan, and if Verdejo did win I think it would most likely be competitive and on points.

Corolla v Linares wasn't close, think it will be wider next week for Linares, can see why they took the rematch it's an easyish defence for Linares at good money.CaptainSpacerod wrote:I think both Flan and Crolla are bang ordinary by world class standards.
