Some Tex Cobb Questions.

Post by KOJOE90 »

Last night I was again viewing my copy of Tex Cobb vs Leon Spinks and it got me to thinking about the following questions.

(1) Does anyone here have any information on the iron chinned Cobbs 1st round KO loss to Dee Collier. I seem to recall that Collier was a powerfull man with a huge punch but little else, skill wise. Can anyone expand on this?

(2) What was the outcome of the rumours that some of Cobbs comeback fights in the late 80's early 90's were fixed? I seem to recall reading that Sport Illustrated run a story on this and Cobb took them to court. If so what was the outcome?

(3) Why did Cobb finally retire? I only ask because it is unusual for a fighter to retire on a winning streak.

Vaguely recall the Collier shocker. Think Tex was down three times or something, and taking a hammering when the ref stopped it. Collier must have swung from the hip and got lucky. Never thought we'd see the day..

Looking at the stumblebums Tex was matched with after, no surprise if the press was a bit suspicious of some of the "contests".

Could be wrong, but I think it might have been a medical thing when he retired.

Tex's wife posts on a message board somewhere I remember.

It was rumored that a couple of his last bouts were fixed, though I don't know if anything was ever proven other than the fact that both Cobb and Sonny Barch had dabbled in a little cocaine sometime before they're bout.

Cobb sued Sport Illustrated and won a few million dollars for libel and in usual Cobb form spouted out a great one-liner. Sport Illustrated had said something like, "Cobb was a fat, used-up drug addict," which Cobb responded back with, "Who are they calling fat?"

I think he retired because he won a few million in the law suit and didn't need to fight any more!

Also, look at the guys he was fighting during that career ending run...9-8-1 was probably the best record up there, so it's not like he quit after KOing Holmes and Tyson back to back.

Cobb sued SPORTS ILLUSTRATED and won a suit. But SPORTS ILLUSTRATED counter sued, I foget on what grounds, think it was an appeal, and they won it. Cobb since then I believe has tried to reappeal.

As far as the Sonny Barch dive talk, that was never proven, all I know is this: Cobb was in line to face Tommy "The Duke" Morrison for the WBO Heavyweight title.

But When SPORTS ILLUSTRATED made the claims, he completely forgot about boxing it seemed---as far as the Health issues is concerned, I never heard about that.

On a side note, anyone seen his son Josh Cobb box? Was somewhat disappointing seeing the 6'6" 270 pound kid who was all hyped up and was a former football star in his college lose off the bat.

Josh Cobb is a complete joke in the ring! Unfortuantely, he used his dad's name to get a slot on ESPN while another, really deserving fighter, had to miss out!

I have written a number of previous posts on Josh Cobb,
who is as bad a fighter (?!!) that I have seen during the
last couple of years. He doesn't belong in a boxing
ring.

Cobbs chin was fading from all the punishment he took in his previous fight Eddie Gregg decked him hard in the 9th & Gregg wasnt a hitter. Collier was frickin huge & if u got in the way of his shots you were obviously going down. Cobb was down like 6 times in the opening rd.

I think Cobb stopped fighting because he was overcome by his legal battles i never heard that he won any money. He was also making a bit of money on the side from films so maybe thats why...

Tim "Doc" Anderson was originally scheduled to face Cobb that night but when Cobb saw the shape Anderson was in he did not want to risk fighting him. Cobb had a bum shoulder and Anderson was not going to take a dive so they threw in Barch who was one of Parker's right hand men and he did the job.
