Trainer Joe Gallagher compared Liam Smith’s fight like going “into the Champions League final having only done keepie-uppies in training”.

Smith was restricted to just 18 rounds of sparring because of a cut above his right eye which opened early in the fight.

Smith hadn’t sparred since August 12.

“Canelo had to work hard. He was cute up close, gave no gaps away,” said Gallagher.

“Liam hadn’t sparred for five weeks. You can’t go into the Champions League final having only done keepie-uppies in training. He went to war without boxing.

Pun intended?

He's got that trampy look about him. I've got a mate like that. You could send him to a health spa for a month, fit him with the best suit, shoes, nice watch, splash him in the most expensive of aftershaves and he'd still look like a paraffin lamp

Problems at the gym now. Gallagher hasn't been in. Apparently he's gone down crufts instead.

I meant to make reference to Joes tactical masterplan

That would certainly have made my satirical intent clear

Me too.

Much as you have to respect Joe G's CV as a trainer, there IS something about the way he comes across, the things he says etc. that rubs me up the wrong way. I'm sure I'd love the "Tesco Joe" and "Gallaghers dog-walking, pate-eating" jokes if I only I had a clue what the hell they were based on !?

Imo Liam Smith can be very proud of his performance vs Canelo and this "unlucky" BS somehow takes the shine off how well he did.

Came over very reasoned and articulately in my opinion. Said Liam a lot in that video. I wonder if any famous Liams might be tuning in, such as Gallagher of Neeson :-?

Who’s the Smith that’s meant to be top notch? I thought it was this one but got mixed up. Isn’t there another one that’s unbeaten still?

Way too personal, and silly attacks on an individual in this thread.

Not like a trainer to big up his fighter, is it now? To see things from his fighter's POV.

Freddie Roach said Cotto beat Canelo and should be granted a rematch.

And also said that Pacquiao should get a Mayweather rematch because the latter ran, didn't really win, etc.

And was written off as a trainer back in 1992 because of a high profile loss when his fighter Virgil Hill fought timidly against an ageing Tommy Hearns...then ends up with a reputation for training the best attacking fighters in the world.

Too personal and too unforgiving. Lot of attitude and gloating on here - especially for Joe's fighters to get beaten - and sometimes I think there's something wrong with people.
