It would be some dreadful low budget cliche production. No way. It's not even that great a story. Bullying some internet poster is hardly a worthwhile topic. .
Fair enough, I just love an 'underdog realising a dream' type of story. I think it depends on whether you like the main character or not, I followed Curtis' story and was delighted when he finally won the British title. If the betting story is true then even better! I agree its not exactly Hollywood blockbuster material but it was still a story that warmed my heart.
I recently watched the Tapia documentary and thought that was very good. I remember seeing the trailer for 'Gomez' and thinking it looked promising, was disappointed it never actually came out.
One of the best boxing books I've read was 'The Killings Of Stanley Ketchel' and I'd love to see that on the big screen if they could get the characters right, the Michigan Assassin had a very colourful life indeed!
I love that book and think that would be a great film.
Also Terry Downes. London boy goes to America after the war because his dancer sister loses an arm in an accident. Joins the marines, loads of adventures then comes back to England. Hyped up prospect. Loads of setbacks. Eventually wins a world title.
He ko'd Max Schmeling in a round in Germany, years before Louis, after losing on points in a previous match. Fought best Europe had to offer. Was from Wales and pretended to be a Gipsy, wearing earrings and a bandana.

There may not be enough info about him to actually make a film, but he sounds like a character.
I recently tried to find something to back up the Watanabe thing, and couldn't find anything to do with his mother from Japan. Just a single forum post in English.
Jiro was part of the Yakuza, but other than that there seems to be some ....fiction behind the video

Sounded like a pure bully. Used to spit in folk's pints and take them away. Think he got banned from Wakefield town centre. At least one of his sons is in prison for murder. A wrong'un.

There is some footage of Ketchel on youtube but not a lot. Its real folklore innit? Flooring Jack Johnson then getting sparked out for his cheek although according to Johnson it was agreed that they'd make it more of an exhibition bout then Ketchel took liberties
Ali Raymi. It'd have to be a Spinal Tap-esque mockumentary, but with quotes like;

History will remember me as the most powerful puncher that rambled through divisions like the Nazi divisions did France, Belgium & the lowlanders. Ducking me and running away to Dunkirk makes you a coward. Until someone stands up to my fistic tyranny I am the one and only dictator.
The fact that he dies in an air strike, has the record for the most consecutive first round KO's, dies in an air strike and may well have never existed, it would be amazing.

Bully to his dad or returning the favour? Sounds like his dad was instrumental in what Paul became and used a firm line on him as a boy, fists an all.

i suppose given his start in life he could be seen as an over achiever , i never thought of it that way before. just imagine what he could have achieved if he led the life properly.
for all he was a proper hard man and willing to get into a tear up he had a lot of skill as well and good power . that sheer will to win no matter how tough things get is something not everyone has .

Just got around to watching that: what a nasty piece of work.
Engrossing viewing though and it features the most depressing marriage ceremony I've ever seen!
Glad Gardener beat the crap out of him and forced the bully to back down.
