Canelo beats Golovkin on points?

Post by kbackup408 »

This isn't based just on yesterdays bout but also GGG's performance against Brook I think Canelo has a good chance to beat G on points that left hook to the body will be Golovkins downfall !

He has a better chance than I thought initially. GGG seemed a bit gun shy last night. Was very wary of what was coming back and looked more than a little uncomfortable at times. However Canelo doesn't possess the ring IQ, speed, movement or power Jacobs does. Jacobs looked like a Super Middle next to GGG who isn't the biggest at 160.

Still think GGG does him though unless he's dramatically on the slide.

Give it 12 to 18 months and Golden Buoy will have sufficiently marinated 3G for their purposes.

I never look into the Brook fight as GGG regressing because he smashed Brook in a mismatch. As for last night yeah he wasn't as good but Jacobs exceeded everyone's expectations.

Conelo can not move as good as Jacobs and the fact he dropped the WBC middleweight to avoid GGG to fight a British level fighter in Liam Smith says it all.

That being said I think GGG ASBOLUTELY HAS TO KNOCK CONELO OUT !!!!! I do think he will get robbed on the cards.

But who will he fight in the interim?

I can see him getting an injury ;-) against Chavez and delaying it to next year.

THIS - the size difference was striking and it nullified everything that makes GGG special.

He couldn't get inside the length. He couldn't risk taking one to land one. He couldn't cut off the ring. He couldn't move him around on the inside.

I've always felt GGG would edge a competitive fight, but after last night I'd highlight Canelo's body work and speed advantage over GGG as key points if they were to meet. I think Golovkin's jab is pivotal too, I wanna see it, if Canelo doesn't make it after tonight he's a joke. The thing I took from last night is Daniel Jacobs is more legit than I thought.

DJ was game bro he was so much quicker than I thought after yesterday I refuse to make conclusions from youtube videos, because Jacobs looked bang average on tape

Indeed, the here & now is where it's at. Watching both guys live figuring each other out was tense. I'd have to watch this fight again to score it properly, I thought a draw may have been on it's way.

There's now been 2 fights where Golovkin has been wary of the opponents power and treated them with respect, Jacobs and Lemieux.
Canelo is strong and has a dig but hasn't got anywhere near the one punch power of those 2.
So he doesn't get the respect they did and will find himself trading with GGG
He also doesn't have the height and reach of Jacobs or the movement or quickness that Jacobs displayed last night.

Canelo does have other strengths over Jacobs and I think I might actually favour Canelo against Jacobs or Lemieux, as they'd be better suited for him IMO
I think styles plays a big part in this and given that I don't think Canelo beats GGG.
He's strong and bullish, tough as hell and puts punches together well. He pressures well, keep compact and keeps up a good work rate but I don't see him having the necessary tools to keep Golovkin off and he'd have to win the battle up close and I still think he's over matched in that department

Canelo is durable, can put his shots together well, and I think would be more likely than GGG to receive generous judging. I can definitely see him making it through the fight and scraping by on points.

That said, he's nowhere near as mobile or long as Jacobs (5'7'' or so vs 6'0"), and it won't be nearly as hard for GGG to find him.

I still favour GGG to get the better of Canelo if it happens this year, but I can see a route to victory for the latter and certainly cant ignore the judging factor.

The differences between Jacobs and Canelo are major though, as we've noted. One is a 5'7'' plodder who spends a lot of time resting against the ropes, the other is 6'0'' and moved rapidly all night. Jacobs is also clearly faster than Canelo with his hands IMO.

Triple G turns 35 in a couple of weeks, his peak has passed, unfortunately we will never know how good he really was as we will never see him fight an elite fighter in his own prime.

Based on the Brook and Jacobs fights, he is now very beatable, Canelo has a very good chance.

Your correct, the competition at middleweight is poor, other than Jacobs even a past his peak Golovkin can still dominate what is out there My point is, i feel he is on the slide and there for the taking, but it will still take a very, very good fighter to beat him, no doubt.

He can forget Super Middleweight now, a few years ago yes, but not now.

Canelo is his dream fight, but as Golovkin ages Canelo only matures and the gap between does not seem so wide anymore. After GGG last two fights, i believe many will now lean towards Canelo.

18 months ago i laughed at the thought of a GGG v Saunders fight, its not such a funny thought now. Yes, GGG still wins comfortably, but i wont totally right Billy off as i would have done 2 years ago.

I'm inclined to agree. He's got a bad style for Canelo and I think would be too big and physically strong for Saunders.

As for Canelo vs Golovkin, I'd still side with Golovkin but have always thought that stylistically Golovkin's come forward style would give Canelo a lot of chances to land good combinations. Canelo likes fighters who walk towards him and would have success against GGG, I do think Golovkin would still have a bit too much for him though. Not always what we want to see but I think GGG would do well against Canelo by sticking the jab in his face all night like he did to Lemieux and try and make Canelo use his legs more than he likes to.

The thing with BJS is, unlike others, for some reason he doesn't get rated based on his last fight. If that's the case there's about 25 middleweights who could beat him, hell, based on Billy's last fight I'd back Brook to beat him!

If sheer size difference between him and another middleweight can nullify everything that makes him "special" then as a boxer then he's not that special.

Because it's obvious why he under performed, he was utterly out of shape.

Well - Jacobs is very good AS WELL.
MM had a big size advantage, but he didn't have the footwork, movement, handspeed or power that DJ did.
GGG did still win too - I'm definitely keeping him in the special club
