The difference is: I have no commercial or other interested in hyping up Kessler.

Whats he done other than beat a washed up Lucas and overated Mundine who's best wins are over guys with like 6 wins and more than 10 losses except for Echols. Siaca was beaten by Mitchell twice too.

Not again. We differ sharply in the assessment of Mundine. So be it, but we don't need to chew this through 200 times.

Besides, it's not only the quality of the opposition that makes me think highy of Kessler, it's also HOW Kessler handles his opponents, dominating every second of the fight. He's a complete fighter who seems to be able to adapt to any style, and his defensive abilities are second to none in the higher weight classes. Thus, he's not only very good, he has also a STYLE that ought to be troublesome for Calzaghe. And styles make fights. Again, Calzaghe has not fought any classy evasive counterpunchers EXCEPT for Reid where he almost lost.

The one-line summary: while Beyer-Calzaghe would be more meaninfgul than Lacy-Calzaghe, I really want to see Kessler-Calzaghe.

And I'm almost certain we'll never get that fight. If Calzaghe proves me wrong here, my respect for him will skyrocket. Take my word for it.

Btw, to all those who disagree with me: I do emphatically NOT say that Calzaghe is bad. I do say that he is protected though, and that the Lacy-fight did not change anything really substantial in this regard. It was a first step in the right direction after a long draught, but there have been several such first steps in Joe's career (e.g., Brewer). A meaningful second step is what is needed now. I doubt though Warren will allow him to do so.

I remember the majority of the US saying Lacy was the champ and he was going to come to the UK to knockout Joe .......... before going on to beat Tarver, Tyson and King-Kong.

Calzaghe held the WBO-belt and made loads of defenses agasint tomatco-cans and have-beens. Probably the poorest record of all beltholders. He has never been "the champ" at 168 - this is an entriely different thing.

As for Lacy, the uninformed US public hyped him up badly before the bout. But it was always clear to me that the immobile Lacy was taylor-made for Calzaghe, and that team Calzaghe would used this fight to push Joe's reputation - who had become known as a compulsive ducker - with an ultimately cheap win, while continuing to avoid the real challenges.

And everything plays out EXACTLY as predicted.

(who has only fought anyone of note in his last 3 fights, I hope this fight comes off)

Its well known that Joe hasn't had enough BIG fight, but to call him a 'compulsive ducker' is rubbish. Joe has been the victim of boxing politics and inflated ego's on more than one ocassion (Hopkins and Ottke spring to mind) hes also had injuries at crucial times in his career (Glenn Johnson fight being the main one).

There's still plenty to come from Joe, hopefully the Kessler, Tarver and Johnson fights will come off over the next 12-18 months, then Calzaghes reputation will match his skills. IMO there's nobody between 160 and 175 that beats Joe

I don't understand how you bring up Hopkins as having an inflated ego. They guy hammered Trinidad, a man many thought may end his career undefeated, to become the UNDISPUTED champ at 160 (a superchamp as well), and he earned 12 million to fight DLH...so, if anyone desrved big money, it was him...sitting on 20 title defenses, and being the man in one of boxing's most historic divisions.

Should be a excellent fight and at last, see who reigns supreme now that Sven Ottke (thank god) is gone.

I will be at the MEN and will hope the atmosphere will be as good as when Tszyu graced my presence.


I have a hard time considering Calzsaghe 17 "defenses" against washed-up opponents (Brewer, Mitchell, Woodhall, Eubank all fall into this category) and outright bums as "amazing". Anyway, Lacy is a step up and Calzaghe undoubtedly has strenghts - handspeed, chin, attitude - as well as weaknesses - defense, lateral movement, power; all at best second rate. On the other side, Lacy is a bit untested, and he seems a bit statonary, relying too much on his power - as I wrote elsewhere, kind of a younger, faster version of Brian Mitchell. Unless Lacy can pull something that we haven't seen yet, he seems like an almost ideal opponent for Calzaghe.

In view of this and given that the fight takes place in the UK, I'd also lean towards Calzaghe. IF he comes in motivated. This is a big if.

However, whoever wins this doesn't reign supreme - Mike Kessler is the man to beat at super-middleweight, and supremacy won't be established until this hasn't happened.

My five cents:

1) Kessler - impressive performances against Mundine and Siaca
2) Calzaghe - THE disappointment in today's boxing, but you can't dismiss him
3) Beyer - mentally shaky; when he's good he's really good, when he's poor he's really poor
4) Mundine - very talented but also a bit shaky; lost a couple of key fights (Ottke, Kessler) but demonstrated that he can take anyone into deep waters
5) Green - the Beyer-fight showed his limits against a technically skilled fighter, but he reamins a very dangerous opponent. Can win a title any time
6) Lacy - not proven yet, battered an over-the-hill Reid but struggled against journeyman Sheika. Looks a bit one-dimensional, but his strenght alone makes him a threat

It is well known that Calzaghe excels against punchers who carry the fight to him. A complete top-notch fighter needs to be able to cope with ANY style though, and here we are lacking conclusive evidence.

Btw, this is what Calzaghe himself says about the style matchup (from fightnews):

"I like Lacy's style, he's an exciting fighter but I think that his style plays in to my hands to be honest," exclaimed Calzaghe. "I like fighters who come to me rather than fighters I have to chase."

My saying all along. Lacy suits Calzaghe. What does not suit Calzaghe would be an evasive, slick counterpuncher with good footspeed, and this is why he hasn't faced any of these in his entire career.

If Calzaghe can avoid or withstand Lacy's power-punches he will win. Team Calzaghe has done its homework before taking this fight: they have avoided excess risks during Joe's entire career, they are taking a calculated risk now. I doubt team Lacy has done its homework though. The fight comes too early for Jeff.

Most of the posts I can find are mostly just pro Kessler ones! Which were after my Sheika clip.

Btw, this is what Calzaghe himself says about the style matchup (from fightnews):

"I like Lacy's style, he's an exciting fighter but I think that his style plays in to my hands to be honest," exclaimed Calzaghe. "I like fighters who come to me rather than fighters I have to chase."

My saying all along. Lacy suits Calzaghe. What does not suit Calzaghe would be an evasive, slick counterpuncher with good footspeed, and this is why he hasn't faced any of these in his entire career.

If Calzaghe can avoid or withstand Lacy's power-punches he will win. Team Calzaghe has done its homework before taking this fight: they have avoided excess risks during Joe's entire career, they are taking a calculated risk now. I doubt team Lacy has done its homework though. The fight comes too early for Jeff.

Most of the posts I can find are mostly just pro Kessler ones! Which were after my Sheika clip.

Or one says Joe ducked a guy like Mundine!

In a nutshell: you can't come up with ONE post where I would have spoken highly of Lacy - while there are plentiful posts where I doubted Lacy's potential, reaching back to ever since I joined this forum last August (see the above).

But still you don't have the guts and decency to retract your false statement - that I would have started to doubt Lacy only after you posted this clip - and admit that you grossly misrepresented my views. Instead of conceding that you were mistaken, you try all kinds of detractions- listing what I wrote about Mundine or Kessler (not the topic here), or what Knob Mc Dude wrote (neither). And, ultimately, you insist on character-assassinating me - even if you have to blatantly ignore all the facts for this.

Why don't you just say: "sorry I was wrong, and I apologize" - is this simply beyond your means?
