Double entry on Tex Cobb record?

Post by wouter »

The 12-26-1981 fight between Tex Cobb and Jeff Schelburg is in neither fighter's record in RRB 1983, nor are there any other fights listed in Las Vegas, NV that day. Double entry for the 4-19-1982 fight?

I ahve the 1981 bout, but no source -- KO 7 vs KO 8 for the 1982 fight.

I guess I can check the 1985 Ring or the Fight Fax book for that period

1986-1987 RRB page 614 has: 81-12-26 Las Vegas, NV (KO 8) and 82-04-19 Atlantic city, NJ (KO 7).
1986 Mid-American Record Book page 19 also has both fights noted with Cobb weighing 240lb. for the second fight.

I agree that it is a bit odd to have a fight card the day after Christmas in the US, but suggest that we don't delete yet.

What amazes me most is that no other fights are listed that day in Las Vegas and that for some reason the fighters were rematched a couple of months later (with an almost identical result) and also that RRB missed out on one of Cobb's fights who had just challenged Holmes for the title.

if this is an error its a popular error.

i have a magazine from 96 covering tyson-bruno 2, they have an interview with tex cobb, and print his record, and jeff shelburg appears twice.

remember, these white heavies frequently knockout a journeyman and then fight them again.

maybe they were rematched becuase it was an easy win for tex and would pad his record.

maybe its only the date that is incorrect?
