Charlo vs. Heiland WBC Eliminator For Mandatory Golovkin Shot

"Charlo vs. Heiland WBC Eliminator For Mandatory Golovkin Shot"

Former IBF junior middleweight champion Jermall Charlo is inching closer to a world title shot at WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs), who also holds the WBA, IBF, IBO titles.

Last month, Charlo vacated the IBF title and announced his official move to the middleweight division.

BS.com reported two weeks ago that Charlo was given a very high ranking when he made his debut in the WBC's middleweight ratings. The sanctioning body placed him in the number two position within their top ten.

The WBC's number one ranked contender is Jorge Sebastian Heiland (28-4-2, 15 KOs) of Argentina.

According to ESPN Deportes, the World Boxing Council, through its president Mauricio Sulaimán, made an announcement in Argentina that Heiland and Charlo would collide in a final eliminator - with the winner getting a shot at Golovkin.

Reports from Argentina point out that this was Sulaiman's response to the numerous questions about the future of Heiland, who has long been the highest ranked fighter at middleweight, but for whatever reason he was never given the opportunity to get a title shot.

It's a shame for Heiland, since he's been the top ranked WBC contender for a couple of years.

Got to give PBC fighters credit for wanting to risk a tough fight with GGG while nearly every one else is running the other direction.

The WBC hasn’t issued a deadline date whereby the winner of the Charlo-Heiland fight is guaranteed to receive their title shot opportunity.

Didn’t Jorge Heiland win a WBC title eliminator in 2014, but he still hasn’t received a shot at Golovkin? Has Deontay Wilder ever performed a successful defence of his WBC heavyweight title, a belt he won in January 2015? How long was Viktor Postal the mandatory challenger to Danny Garcia’s WBC 140lbs title?

That’s the problem, the WBC don’t always force their champions to face their top ranked/mandatory challengers in a timely manner.

So even if Charlo defeats Heiland, we probably won’t see the Kazakh face Jermall anytime soon, because GGG has bigger fish to fry (i.e. Canelo & Saunders).

Chickenson hasn't had a mandatory for 3 .5 years.
