Now I ended up going last night at late notice in decent seats because a friend had spare. I'll post on the main thread about the card but I feel Jason deserves a thread on his own.

On paper going in I had seen Morrison a couple of times looks ok but KOing a couple of wasters.

But seeing that Morrsion had fought at middleweight and Welborn had always fought at lower weight I felt this would be a typical matchroom fight building a prospect against guys from lower weight divisions.

The size was very visible on the night as well. Like I think Boxingprospect quoted me I thought it may have been a mismatch because of the size. Especially having seen Welborn outgunned by Liam smith a few years back at light middle in the same arena.

The point is Welborn was there to get beat up and make the home fighter look good and instead he ripped up the script.

I don't know what the odds were but I reckon Morrison was heavy odds on favourite.

Welborn suffered punishment early on and battled through it. It wasn't the size advantage he had to work against it was the referee as well. There were three moments where the referee should have stopped that. If it was Morrison getting Welborn in those situations he would have jumped in without hesitation. I was just glad he got the decision which he quite clearly deserved.

Time and time again we see away fighters get crapped on with judges and referees so I am glad he got it.

Also really nice to see Jason in the crowd afterward and plenty of people asking him for pictures. His family weren't too far from me. I shook his hand and praised him on the performance.

Excellent performance from Welborn. He just wasn't going to be denied and never stopped. I thought Morrision should've been pulled out. I had him well behind and he was taking far too many full bloodied shots. Showed guts but a young fighter shouldn't be allowed to take a prolonged beating like that and his corner should've pulled him out.

Jason's a good honest pro I've seen a lot of him on the local scene over the years and in some really good fights too. Hope he gets a big fight off the back of last nights win.

Cracking performance from Welborn and thoroughly deserves his moment, Let's hope he gets a decent defence of the title and then the obvious rematch with Morrison and he earns very well from both.

I completely agree with the sentiments of this thread.

I was amongst his family and friends last night ( no connection whatsoever ) and found myself cheering him on especially after the knockdown in the second where he had to show great guts and determination to survive .

He came back strong and flourished in the atmosphere putting on a magnificent performance.
It was great to see him after enjoying his moment amongst the crowd proudly posing with his new belt .

I agree with the comment about the referee too , that fight should have been stopped when Morrison was in deep trouble on more than one occasion offering nothing taking unnecessary punishment .

As pointed out had it not been the home fighter it would have undoubtedly been stopped.
What disappoints me most is that referee , Victor Loughlin is the same ref for Nick Blackwells last fight. He really should know better.

I didn't quite fall asleep but i was close to heading to bed. Was glad Arnfield won because Rose is a bit of a tit but it was one to forget.

If Langford vacated the British I imagine we will see Arnfield vs Welborn for the vacant strap. That will be an interesting clash of styles.

Welborns a light middleweight though I'd like to see him get a big fight at 154 sick of all this crap where lads without big promoters only get a deserved opportunity at the weight above their natural weight.

Surprised that people are shocked the ref never stopped it. Agree it should have been but it was the Matchroom fighter taking the punishment of course it wasn't stopped! That wasn't in the script. If it was the other way round?....definitely would have been stopped.

Can't blame the ref Morrison was firing back. Blame lies completely with Joe. Let's his prospect get battered unnecessarily for 5/6 rounds yet try's to pull his ex-world champion out in the last round in his last chance saloon fight.
Welborn boxed well. Really impressed he didn't take his foot off the pedal and let Morrison back into the fight.

Excellent performance from Welborn, I mentioned in another thread that fighters preparation cant be underestimated, by all accounts this was the 1st time he had a proper full training camp with full notice etc and it showed he was just relentless, same with Hughes in the Ward fight although I had Martin just winning Maxi was a lot better for it having a full camp

Good points mate I thought welborne would struggle for being smaller but the full camp clearly made that big difference

That he did ,almost too brave for his own good . He will grow old in the ring very quickly if he keeps taking the beating he did .

As others have said Tesco should have pulled him out well before the end .

I personally feel the Morrison contest should have been stopped much earlier but as we know he was the home fighter & was allowed to take it & as others have said if it were the other way round Welborn would have been saved by he ref. Nothing will be done by those who must be obeyed, we see it time & time again sub standard reffing, bad scoring it just goes on & on. Years ago it would not have happened the ref would be down graded just like Mike Jacobs was from a Star ref down to an A ref, another ref Seamus Dunne from Watford was cruelly shown the door for (what was thought) letting a boxer take a bit too much but as it turned out his face didn't fit with The Hierarchy & he was shown the door which wasn't right.It clearly seems as if there is one rule for some & another rule for others. Having said that, Welborn fought his heart out & it was Gr8 to see his honest efforts rewarded.

This is one of the negative aspects of home fighters getting such a good deal from referees on a weekly basis. Home fighters who are taking a beating and who should really be pulled out are kept going because if they can somehow make it to the end of the fight, they may get s gift.

It isn't safe.
