Gone with Froch as the Groves fight and Kessler 2 would have eclipsed Joe's biggest purse IMO.

Shame as calzaghe is the better fighter but I guess Froch was rewarded for being with Sky and taking on every fighter.

not sure what the Hopkins and RJJ fights paid.
But I'm guessing Froch/Groves 2 made bundles.

Calzaghe still the superior fighter however...

I think Calzaghe earned the highest payday out the two - his $10m for the Jones fight. He also earned good money in the stadium against Kessler and Vegas against Hopkns. I think he earned more but it's not by much going by Froch's wage for Groves rematch.

Joe had more fights so I'm going with him. I don't know what Joe's up to these days, he seems to be off the media radar

I think both did very well out of the sport. The principal objective of prizefighting is to get paid. Froch gets more plaudits because he ..... not to sugar coat it... went to war again and again. And so he rightly should. He also got punched on the bonce a lot more for his troubles.
Personally, I have no problem whatsoever with fighters taking the least risk for the most reward - it’s their health and their prerogative. Fans can always vote with their wallets. Both men got rich and both served up plenty of action. It’s no more complicated than that as far as I’m concerned.

I'm sure I've read that Froch was quite canny with his money and invested in property from a young age. I would imagine he is worth more now and probably made more from boxing too.

Froch I would imagine. Joe would've boxed his head off though.

Who cares if Calzaghe was better or not?

Why's that even being brought up?

just an interesting thought that Calzaghe was probably the better boxer but probably made less money.
They do have one major thing in common however, a distinct lack of charisma...

I recko Joe probably made more in total he was a champ for about 24 years and had oodles of defences. I gues Froch had the biggest individual purse though.

I tend to agree with you there, but if you started a Carl and Joe thread about favourite ice-cream flavour, a lot of people will naturally work it round to who would have won.

FWIW I’ve never seen anyone yet on this forum about Boxing say anything other than Calzaghe would have won! Although having read Carl’s book - and all autobiographies are like this.........they have you wondering. Every defeat comes with a “reason” - and everyone was “beatable” . Froch was convinced he would have won.

Michael Watson would have done The Bodysnatcher, Froch would have done Ward and last week I read Clinton Woods would have done that Mason The Line Dixon fella .....forgot his bloody real name now, on his best night. All from the horse’s mouth...

It’s probably something to do with believing in yourself and your best possible self - which is what all athletes aspire to :maybe:

I imagine there is a difference between expected purses and actual purses when you consider who promoted Joe for a large portion of his career. Didn't he get stiffed out of a couple million pound purse for either the Hopkins or Jones Jnr fights?

Joe, he would have made a tonne of money from his last 4 fights.

After beating Lacy, he cashed in big time and finally became a big draw in Wales and a big name in the US.

I was going to say about Froch's Wembley fight until I realised Calzaghe fought in front of a load of people in the millenium stadium against Kessler. I'd say Froch but I don't think there would be much between the two figures.

Froch got 8m for the Groves rematch.

This article is interesting. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2009/ ... high-court

Suggests that a 2004 contract signed by Calzaghe ended with him being guaranteed a minimum £600k for four fights, which was all he was paid, reading between the lines, until a new contract was signed which saw Joe end up in court against Warren.

I'd have backed Joe, no doubt but he struggled with the Egyptian fella ( forget his name now ) who was rough, rangy and awkward.

Froch would give him problems, no doubt. He isn't an easy night for anyone.

I'm a Froch fan. I miss him. I have no doubts whatsoever Calzaghe would've beaten comprehensively though.

Froch made quite a bit more I reckon. Duno where people are getting a $10m purse for Calzaghe vs Jones, I can't see that but willing to be corrected?

The way Warren treated (and treats) his fighters I can't see Calzaghe getting out with more than £5m-£7m out of his career, there was a lack of huge defining fights. Weren't those last two American fights £1.5m ish paydays?

I reckon Froch got out with £10m-15m-ish with the two Groves fights, plus Kessler at O2 plus was on fairly decent money in the Super Six fights.
