WBO LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION TERRY FLANAGAN JIBES SKY SPORTS BOXING

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

WBO Lightweight Champion Terry Flanagan passes a witty jibe at Sky Sports Boxing following the Anthony Crolla vs Jorge Linares WBA and Ring Magazine lightweight world title fight.

We’ve written on here before how WBO Lightweight Champion Terry Flanagan is probably one of the most underestimated world champions currently in boxing.

His profile outside of hardcore boxing fans isn’t perhaps what it should be and after fellow Manchester boxer Anthony Crolla boxed on Sky Sports last night – Flanagan had this to say:
My name was like a swear word on sky last night .. they all must get told what ever you do don’t mention terry flanagan
— Terry Flanagan (@terryflanagan5) March 26, 2017
He has a bit of a point, to be fair.

Sky Sports Boxing who do an excellent job for the sport and have supported boxing for a number of years in the UK and Ireland, at the same time can be a bit biased to their own fighters at times.

Like any business, they look after their own first off. Understandable to an extent but boxing fans would prefer them to be more balanced where possible.

Sky don't care about anything or anyone which isn't on their platform.

Bit of both. They report on it, but don't advertise on it. Sky Sports news carried stories about Peter Fury getting a visa this week and Tyson saying he had a return date was 'breaking news' on the same platform.

People overdo the importance of Sky to promoting fighters. Nobody has heard of Terry Flanagan because he's got a crap promoter and he does no self-promotion. Tyson Fury on the other hand is a household name.

I don't have much issue with Sky not mentioning Flanagan's name much. They didn't mention Robert Easter either and his wins, I'd argue have been just as strong as Flanagan's.

Would anyone disagree that Linares v Garcia would be the best fight to make at lightweight? Flanagan needs to builds his profile and fan base and improve his opposition. Fights against Fana, Cruz and Matthews over the last 18 months don't help him at all. From what I've seen, the Manchester Arena has sold c.3,500 tickets for his card against Petrov (and it's a strong card).

I think it's more to the point that Flanagan and crolla are from the same city and even the same school so it would make more sense to mention him over Easter who like Flanagan doesn't have the biggest profile

This. Flanagan needs to do more himself before he moans about a rival promoter/broadcaster not pushing his name.

Flanagan may well be better than Crolla but his WBO reign has been so awful that even the people defending him when he first won the belt are now sat silent.

Magdaleno was an okay challenger and Petrov is solid (I'd say they're comparable to Crolla's Perez/Barroso pair), but there's been a year and a half of boring matches between that, with ancient Fana and tiny Cruz being downright laughable opponents.

So ya, it's been pretty easy to lose interest in Flanagan given his most recent opponents.

He's doing a Joe Calzaghe. At least Hearn's men go for tough voluntarys at times.

Without naming Crollas Linares the first time. Which Hearn passed as a unification ( which it clearly wasn't)

What are matchroom fighters toughest voluntary defences ? They are as bad as FW.

I'm struggling.

Perhaps the better comparison would be to look at both promotors respective world champions and consider the comparative quality between who they beat to win the title and who they have defended against.

A recent one would be McDonnell, in Monaco. The Regular belt holder. That was a voluntary. He clearly lost the fight and received boo's but they gave him the decision.

For someone called Tyson Fury, with legendry trash talking and won the lineal HW crown he's actually somewhat under the radar.

So taking out the fight that immediately argues your point we can go with.

McDonnell v Kameda twice.
Quigg v Martinez (not saying this was an amazing fight, but probabaly the toughest fight that Quigg could have taken at the time that didn't involve a rival belt holder.)
Burns v Beltran (likewise probably not many tougher guys he could have faced without going after another belt holder.)

As far as I'm concerned Flanagan remains unproven at top level despite his unbeaten record and "world" title.
The quality of his opposition has been poor. Petrov is a decent test.
Flanagan reminds me of the situation with Lucian Bute...he was spoken about as some sort of Super Middle great despite never stepping outside Canada and fighting so-so opponents. Carl Froch destroyed him and Bute's aura evaporated.
Flanagan MAY be the real deal...but he needs to prove it.

Probably because he doesn't fight anymore. He's well known but more so recently because the only reason he makes the news is talk.

A bit biased is an understatement. Froch had crolla winning the first round on Saturday

Agree with burns v Beltran :TU:

Quigg and McDonnell were not world champions. McDonnell was actually challenger to Kameda but the WBO was stripped because MCDonnell was not ranked with them.

I agree with sky

You promote your own as it's a business

Anybody that thinks anything else is stupid

Terry should blame his promotor

If well more tickets to white collar than he sells

Commenter Andy Clarke often mentions fighters from other platforms' and often tells you about a show he has been to on a rival promotion.

Crolla is more widely known to "casuals" in part because Sky has a much wider customer base than allegedly and because let's face it Eddie Hearn is so much better at promoting his fighters and cards than FW is. Regardless of this I don't think Crolla, even having won a world title, would have crossed the public's radar were it not for his have a go hero antics chasing the burglars.

Flanagan would need to beat Crolla in a well publicized domestic showdown or get an amazing win against someone elite to get the attention he merits. He's a fairly low key character in an unglamorous division, his fights are shown on a subscription only channel and his promoter is not great at promoting his fighters.
