Sky Sports fawning over De La Hoya
Everytime I see his smug face I want to punch the tv. He's such a slimey slippery dishonest promoter (aren't they all..) and the recent BS about Canelo-Golovkin just feed that even more.
HOWEVER - he is a legend of the sport, sure he lost most of the big fights but he DID fight pretty much everyone.
Has his antics as a promoter diminished your respect/love/admiration of him? Or do you subscribe to the kind of reverence Sky showed him on Saturday?

Another like Hearn, total salesman, a creep.
Boxing career yep, well done. His promoting and general image, nope, very fake.

Odd character. Those pics of him in fishnets are very odd indeed. Not sure what he was up to
Re: Sky Sports fawning over De La Hoya
Saying he wanted to marinate the canelo ggg fight made me not take him so seriously
Re: Sky Sports fawning over De La Hoya
I rarely if ever watch interviews with him, he is so full of sh*t and will say whatever suits his agenda at the time.I have no time for him..
Re: Sky Sports fawning over De La Hoya
Say what u want about him but he has the blue print to beat floyd mayweather,he has passed it on to mosley canelo cotto pacquiao and so on and so on thats why floyd has lost so many since they foughtdarkstar81 wrote:Everytime I see his smug face I want to punch the tv. Re: Sky Sports fawning over De La Hoya
Schaeffer was an investment banker and headed up the US division of a Swiss Bank. His family are pretty wealthy and powerful in Swiss society I believe.thechump wrote:He was my fav fighter since he beat chavez buts since he formed golden boy promotions he gets under my skin, every interview he is like a cheap car sales man, then again didnt richard schaffer used to be a car sales man?

Re: Sky Sports fawning over De La Hoya
Obviously his spin on things makes him less than perfect as a promoter but he is doing as good a job as anyone.
Truthfully we are way way away from the terrible things he would have to do to make me dislike him.
Take a look at who he fought and when, look at the amount of green v red on his boxrec even when he was brand new to the pro game.
De La Hoya has had a stellar career and fought many fights which I still enjoy rewatching today.
With regards the 'blueprint', well he ran him closer than anyone else and it wouldn't have been a robbery if he'd got the decision. He sounds foolish going on and on about the 'blueprint' but the fact is he possibly beat the man and almost certainly would have if he were just that little bit younger at the time. The men he has charged with doing the job just haven't been as effective as he was.

I think the consensus is he likes dressing up as a woman when mad on the charlie.

I don't think anyone's questioning his fighting career. As a promoter his principles aren't the same imoleejonesjnr wrote:Obviously his spin on things makes him less than perfect as a promoter but he is doing as good a job as anyone.

Re floyd it's all ifs and buts and meaningless. He had periods of success but he got beat. I scored a floyd win in a close decision, but he was a clear winner I don't see how oscar collect enough rounds. IF oscar had been closer to his peak, Meaningless. IF floyd had been older and more experienced maybe it'd be a wider decision. IF floyd had been younger maybe he'd be slightly more attacking to dominate the fight? Who knows who cares. The only thing that matters that oscar got beat.
Re: Sky Sports fawning over De La Hoya
Total respect for him as a fighter - could have gone much easier routes.... I remember when BM absolutely used to slag him off at every opportunity in his earlier career saying things like he is just waiting until Chavez is 104 years of age before fighting him and he better be careful cos Chavez could slip up before they sign. They would also say that Kostya Tszyu would have had fun with him (this was off course when DLH had just moved up to Lightweight).
Yes sure, his early career was a bit handpicked - such has his Jimmy Bredhal fight. But I have so much respect for him in that he could have had an easy career and made a fortune... but instead might superstars out of the likes of Mosley, Trinidad and Mayweather (who was not box office before his fight with DLH). Oscar was probably getting huge PPV numbers fighting the likes of Carpentier, he didn't need to go down the SuperFight route.
As a promoter, I am not sure.... I still think he is just a "face" and a mouth piece and to be honest seems high as a kite on every occassion now. GBP certainly didn't do his own boxing career any favours.

My answer is simply 'no and this is why'.
With regards the Mayweather 'blueprint', sure, ODLH wasn't able to carry out his method effectively enough to get the decision, but he is the only boxer that a judge has seen beat Mayweather. I'm not really arguing that he won, just that deriding ODLH saying he knows how seems churlish. Having said that, I suppose we all know how to beat Mayweather - 'knock him out', that doesn't make it any easier to do.
Re: Sky Sports fawning over De La Hoya
You know, that is quite extraordinary to be honest, nothing even close enough for judges to give against him from their perspectives (although Castillo could argue this point). The nearest was Maidana and Alvarez being up even cards from one judge each (Ok, one of the judges was that bloody CJ Ross)leejonesjnr wrote: but he is the only boxer that a judge has seen beat Mayweather.

I thought Oscar actually won against The Most Boring Ever.
Oscar has always come across as a very camp, odd sort of character. I always thought he may be bisexual or whatever.
I was not surprised that he has some bizarre sexual perversions and a cocaine problem. Those photos were peculiar to say the least.
Is he the next Kellie Maloney per chance!!!?!

Re: Sky Sports fawning over De La Hoya
Loved him as a fighter. Need more like him today. Not scared to take risks and fought everyone.
As a promoter he's a creepy little slime ball. They pictures of him trannied up are probably the tip of the iceberg! The final straw for me was when Canelo dropped the belt rather than face GGG. Months prior he was ripping in to Cotto for doing the same thing. Big moral speech about never giving up world titles blah blah.....

I have a lot of respect for his boxing career, and that's why his current behaviour annoys me. He is actively holding back Canelo and will probably hold off putting Linares in with Garcia.leejonesjnr wrote:The question is 'has his promotional career diminished your opinion of him and his boxing career'.Ossyrules wrote:I don't think anyone's questioning his fighting career.
