Who made more money from boxing: Calzaghe or Froch?
Re: Who made more money from boxing: Calzaghe or Froch?
Ah here it is Calzaghe earned $10m for the Jones fight:

Wonder what he got for Hopkins after Warren had stiffed him?

I also remember the US commentary for the fight noting that he was making $10m to face Jones.

Re: Who made more money from boxing: Calzaghe or Froch?
Calzaghe co promoted his last fight with Jones. I don't know if that fight was on some kind of us ppv but I imagine that would have been his biggest pay day. Not sure that pay day would eclipse £8m tho.
Re: Who made more money from boxing: Calzaghe or Froch?
I voted froch but don't know the answer
Calzaghe had a lot of smaller shows early in his career and generally money gets bigger as time goes on, and froch was obviously in the big fights after joe retired

Re: Who made more money from boxing: Calzaghe or Froch?
Thats probably why he left warren to get the deal done then.TheCobra wrote:Froch made quite a bit more I reckon. Duno where people are getting a $10m purse for Calzaghe vs Jones, I can't see that but willing to be corrected?
The way Warren treated (and treats) his fighters I can't see Calzaghe getting out with more than £5m-£7m out of his career, there was a lack of huge defining fights. Weren't those last two American fights £1.5m ish paydays?
I reckon Froch got out with £10m-15m-ish with the two Groves fights, plus Kessler at O2 plus was on fairly decent money in the Super Six fights.
Re: Who made more money from boxing: Calzaghe or Froch?
Up until lacy i doubt calzaghe earned that much and up until matchroom got froch i doubt he earned much either but on the whole i reckon froch made well more,2/3 ppv main events plus 80,000 sell out at Wembley pisses on 60,000 millenium calzaghe vs kessler,i cant remember calzaghe main eventing a ppv card, has he ever been the main event? I think calzaghe vs reid was a ppv card but i think naz was the main event
Re: Who made more money from boxing: Calzaghe or Froch?
Surely Joe must have made a decent wedge in the Eubank fight.
Re: Who made more money from boxing: Calzaghe or Froch?
Tough to call.
Froch obviously had more high profile fights toward the end, but I imagine Calzaghe's earnings pre big fights dwarfed Carl's. I think I remember Calzaghe was getting £250k a fight during his WBO defence days, which would be a few million before he started earning larger sums at the end.
Suppose you could also factor in that Calzaghe's trainer was his dad and would likely be getting less of a cut than a normal trainer? could be wrong.
Overall, I think Froch probably just pips it. Especially with Joe getting significantly less than the £4m he was supposed to earn v Hopkins.

As a side note. Calzaghe/Froch must be the most discussed rivalry ever without a bleeding fight between the two.

Dunno Hatton v Witter must be up there too.youngrell wrote:As a side note. Calzaghe/Froch must be the most discussed rivalry ever without a bleeding fight between the two.

I'd imagine that Froch has made more money simply because the bulk of his career was more recent.
Mid table premiership footballers are making more than Paul Gascoine or Gary Linekar.
Time marches on and money goes up.

It is strange, especially since the vast majority seem to think Calzaghe would have won a wide points decision, there's not even that much debate about the likely winner.youngrell wrote:Yeah that was big one too. Has GOmez left us now? I thought this thread would bring him out of the woodwork to be honest. And Expe, where are they?

Froch said he bought a property with his first purse and then continued buying after that.Controversial wrote:I'm sure I've read that Froch was quite canny with his money and invested in property from a young age. I would imagine he is worth more now and probably made more from boxing too.

Yeah it's strange, everyone Froch ever fought would have been dispatched quite easily by Joe.Boxerbeetle wrote:It is strange, especially since the vast majority seem to think Calzaghe would have won a wide points decision, there's not even that much debate about the likely winner.youngrell wrote:Yeah that was big one too. Re: Who made more money from boxing: Calzaghe or Froch?
To answer the original question, I think this debate's been had before on here and I come to the same answer now as I did then, which was Calzaghe.
Froch probably made the biggest individual purse, depending on whether Calzaghe got anything extra from the PPV for the Jones fight, which I don't think he did, which based on the exchange rate at the time and the reported figures of £8m for Froch and $10m for Calzaghe would put him about £1.5m ahead on that front.
But on overall earnings, Calzaghe had 24 world title fights, they might not have all been big fights but they still pay well. Just on the rough figures I can find online:
Jones - $10m/£6.5m
Hopkins - £4.1m (£1.9m was disputed but judging by the way he seems friendly enough with Warren I would guess they came to some sort of agreement over that.
Mkrtchyan, Salem, Ashira and Lacy - £600k each = £2.4m
Veit II - $1.3m/£700k
Those alone come to not far off £14m and there's another 17 world title fights to add to that, including Kessler and there were all sorts of numbers being quoted for Kessler to come over, including $5m so it's reasonable to assume he got a couple of million for that. Warren was quoted in an interview a few years as saying that Calzaghe made £18m with him, Jones on top of that plus a bit from his early days with Mickey Duff and realistically it's likely that his career earnings were in the region of £25m.
Did Froch make £25m from boxing? Highly unlikely for me, Groves II was £8m, but that would mean his other 34 fights would have to average out at somewhere in the region of £500k each. His first 23 fights weren't for world titles and there were no really big fights in there, even at an incredibly optimistic, and to be honest downright ridiculous, average of £50k each, he would have had to average close to £1.5m a fight for the run from Pascal to Groves I. He got $600k plus UK TV for Ward, which was about £400k plus his cut of whatever Sky were willing to pay for a fight in the early hours of the morning, and that was his biggest fight up to that point.
In conclusion, with very little doubt, if any, Calzaghe earned more money in his career.

Yes, and Jones homecoming fight at the Millenium would have made a fortune as well, given the opponent wasn't a big name. A sell out and a PPV, would have made huge money.expe wrote:To answer the original question, I think this debate's been had before on here and I come to the same answer now as I did then, which was Calzaghe.

The Manfredo fight?
