HOWEVER - he is a legend of the sport, sure he lost most of the big fights but he DID fight pretty much everyone.
Has his antics as a promoter diminished your respect/love/admiration of him? Or do you subscribe to the kind of reverence Sky showed him on Saturday?

I'm sure he was an investment banker in Switzerland
Oh, wasnt obvious at the time. Thought you could have been one of those crackpot Mayweather haters who insist he's been beaten several times.thechump wrote:Are you? How many fights has floyd lost? Haha ok rod point takenCaptainSpacerod wrote:I'll always be a fan of the great oscar de la hoya, a man of dazzling talent and real substance. So he likes to party a little these days, big deal .
All promoters take on the persona of used car salesmen, why should Oscar be any different. He gets asked dumass questions by lickspittle interviewers and has to fit his answers into neat 30 second soundbites.
A promoter's job is to maximize income for his fighter not pander to the wishes of fight fans.
Yeah, promoters have to talk shite to hype their products and also to make excuses for their fighter avoiding certain opponents for a variety of reasons.CaptainSpacerod wrote:I'll always be a fan of the great oscar de la hoya, a man of dazzling talent and real substance. Yeah I know..... but in this rather more transparent, media savvy age I'd hoped people would be more clued up.....jamesmcdonnell wrote:People are gullible, always have been, always will be.boxingknockout wrote:The worrying thing is the people still fall for that sh1tejamesmcdonnell wrote:

I think you are probably right.... I was about to write some so-called 'conspiracy' stuff about control and manipulation but I think us cynical old bastards realise it's the truth....jamesmcdonnell wrote:If anything being bombarded with more information seems to be making people dumber.boxingknockout wrote:Yeah I know..... but in this rather more transparent, media savvy age I'd hoped people would be more clued up.....jamesmcdonnell wrote:

I know what u mean but its hard not to be in awe of odlh.....he really belongs in the same bracket as foreman or tyson as a boxing figure as opposed to fighter.......to do what he did inside the ring.....than to do what he did with golden boy its mind blowing....inside the ring he lost focus but was robbed imho v tito, v mosley 2nd time and i narrowly had him beating floyd....his record looks v different when u factor that all in... ...aktho i had him lose to sturm......than look at the huge money he made out of tge ring the monopolies he broke.....he bought ring magazine .....he broke king and to a large extent arum....v smart brilliant businessman....not a bad boxer toodarkstar81 wrote:Everytime I see his smug face I want to punch the tv. Thats the problem i've found the longer I follow the sport; the interests of the hardcore fan tend to be in direct conflict with the promoter.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Yeah, promoters have to talk shite to hype their products and also to make excuses for their fighter avoiding certain opponents for a variety of reasons.CaptainSpacerod wrote:I'll always be a fan of the great oscar de la hoya, a man of dazzling talent and real substance. I feel exactly the same, the more knowledge we have on the business side the more it makes us dislike the sport,i wish i could turn back to the late 80's early 90's were i just watched a fight and didnt know the sh1tty side of the businessIT wrote:Thats the problem i've found the longer I follow the sport; the interests of the hardcore fan tend to be in direct conflict with the promoter.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Yeah, promoters have to talk shite to hype their products and also to make excuses for their fighter avoiding certain opponents for a variety of reasons.CaptainSpacerod wrote:I'll always be a fan of the great oscar de la hoya, a man of dazzling talent and real substance. To be honest- whilst I love the sport, the bullshit that surrounds it is slowly killing my passion for it.
