Katie Taylor calls for three-minute rounds in women's boxing
"Katie Taylor calls for three-minute rounds in women's boxing"
Katie Taylor is calling for women's professional boxing rounds to be increased from two to three minutes having extended her pro record to 4-0 on Saturday in Manchester.
The former Olympic champion -- who is gunning for a world title shot -- fought eight rounds for the first time as she comfortably accounted for Milena Koleva.
Despite lowering Koleva to the canvas in the penultimate round, Taylor was unable to finish the Bulgarian off, and the Irishwoman believes a move to align the time of the rounds with men's professional boxing would enhance the chances of knockout wins.
"Definitely if you had three-minute rounds you would have a better chance of stopping these girls, for sure," Taylor said.
"It does make for a different fight as well. We spar three-minute rounds all the time. I'm happy to go three-minute rounds.
"I think you would see a lot more knockouts in the women's game then."
Taylor's trainer Ross Enamait echoed his charge's sentiments.
"I'd love to see three-minute rounds, I hate the twos. Most of these girls, you're not going to hit them one time and knock them out cold.
"To knock the girls out you're going to have to break them down to the body, and when you have an extra minute that's a lot more time to get those fatigue stoppages."
Taylor's next fight is on the undercard of the world heavyweight title clash between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley on April 29.

She's right...they should box 3 minute rounds.

Who could stomach that much women's boxing, though? The sooner it's over the better imo.

Re: Katie Taylor calls for three-minute rounds in women's boxing
Katie Taylor might prefer to compete in three-minute rounds, as it may allow her to score more stoppages, but the sad fact remains is that she’s not a big puncher.
It’s clear that she currently only manages to stop her opponents by wearing them down via the use of volume punching.
Personally-speaking, I think that she throws too many punches, which prevents her from picking her shots. Her opponents know what to expect, since she’s fairly predictable in her approach - relentless onslaught.
She should show more variety in her approach, employ less movement, (sometimes) allow her foes to come to her, look for openings/mistakes and then do more counter-punching.
So regardless the duration of each round, Katie Taylor would likely score more stoppages if her fighting style was more varied and less rushed.

3 minute rounds would no doubt lead to more stoppages but I thought that was the precise reason why they decided to go with 2 minute rounds in the first place.

Women lack muscle mass and force, but they are more durable than men.
It is ridiculous to prevent women from enduring stress, where they are better than men.
I better know the history of track & fields. Women were restricted to running 800 m at most until 1960. Step by step they were allowed to run longer distances. And now they run marathon (42 km) and longer distances.
If you analyze the average velocity of the world record holders, the relative velocity of women is closer the men's at longer distances. Short track is more kind of force based.
So let women box also 3 minutes and their athletics and ability will be tested better.

Call me a dinosaur but I find the whole idea of women boxing distasteful. I'd never want to ban them or tell them they can't do it but I'll only watch it if it's part of a larger promotion I'm watching.

Came across this old thread.
She advocated for it herself.. then only few years later, when another boxers wanted to go 3 rounds with her, she refused.
