Where does Liam Smith go now ?

Post by Andrew »

Was at the fight tonight and have to say the fight outcome and the aftermath of this was nothing short of disgusting.

Ignore the belt situation Liam Williams is the British champion and he absolutely dominated Liam Smith tonight hence proving the latter is around or below British title level.

No question Williams took the first 6 rounds and Smith clearly following Joe Gallagher master gameplan for significant fights. I only had Smith winning one round. He should have been disqualified for a deliberate head butt and Terry OConnor is simply not fit to referee.

It does seem like Liam Smith deliberately missed weight to leave Warren but regardless this is a bad result for Warren.Smith doesn't have a fan base where as Liam Williams could headline shows in Wales with the belt.

Without the belt Smith is nothing....if he joined Matchroom what are they going to do ? Pad his record and get a toy IBF galactic title and get shipped over to fight someone like Jarret Hurd and get smashed to bits. Imagine if he fought Lara on a PBC card Judges may as well write 120-108 on their cards before the first round starts.

He can't even get the fake WBA belt as Andrade has it and Gallagher has already turned down the fight after promoters agreed terms. That would be a ridiculous mismatch.

Also the attitude of his three brothers after the fight was nothing but disgusting. Egging on the crowd of Williams fans to stir up trouble. Three professional fighters should know better it did kick off really bad in there ( directly opposite side of where I was sat). Celebrating like Liam Smith beat Canelo really they should be critical of Smiths performance considering how they thought Williams was not ready.

Anyway I don't have much expectations of Liam Smiths next move even if it is changing promoters. Even the fighters who have recently lost to the champions I have mentioned ( Tony Harrison,Vanes Martirosyan, Willie Nelson, Jack Culcay) would beat Liam Smith comfortably.

let's be honest, liam smith has never been anything than a warren WBO special.

dont forget one of his world title defences was against jimmy kelly

i hope he does financially well out of the game - and im sure he got a few quid against alvarez - but in real terms he's just not good enough to make it against the best.

williams showed him up, but then im sure he'd say he was affected by trying to make weight so you takes your pick. have you got faith? i havent.

Not one Smith brother has ever beaten a world class fighter as a pro. Says it all really.

They cannot handle criticism at all. Last night Beefy said he would guaranteed have knocked williams out in the next round. He was outclassed the whole fight.

Was it Round 4 Richie Woodhall had him winning? His best round of the first 6 was round 2 and even then he lost it. What a joke.

Unfortunate that Williams now has a loss that bad on his record, immediate rematch is needed.

Great post and thread. Took the words out of my mouth.

Does Liam Smith ever smile? Can you imagine being his missus? Waking up to his miserable boat in the morning?

The interim title is still vacant, FW won't be putting Smith in anymore title fights as he is leaving so expect Williams v Kelly next for the vacant interim

I was ringside last night very near to the Smith Bros and their father , their shocking behaviour wasn't just after but actually before and during the fight.
I couldn't believe what I was witnessing as professional athletes rose to the bait of a few uncomplementary verbals and hand gestures from a small group of Williams fans about Smith failing to make the championship weight . " you fat bar steward " etc.

This should be water off a ducks back but their response was to confront this group ( Callum and Paul ) and as such esculate the situation.
During the fight the pressure was obviously on as Williams dominated and the verbals and gestures between the two groups continued in between the rounds.

After the unsatisfactory ending they were gloating and deliberately taunting the Fans from Wales. Almost 15 minutes after the ending Paul was still in the ring flexing his muscles , smiling and provoking the Williams fans by pointing as if to meet them outside ? .

I appreciate it must be difficult at times but the response of Smiths was only adding fuel to the fire and actually inciting further trouble ( it had been kicking of in the arena ) .
Their behaviour was disappointing to say the least , they really should know better.

Scousers love whining. Although they would rather think they are known for their untouchable sense of humor, what they are actually known for is whining, drama queen antics , victim mentality and an inability to take criticism.

I have many scouse mates, does`t change the fact that they are whiners.

My point about the Smith brothers is not a scouse insult, it`s the truth. The fact that you take it as an insult on scousers is just fuel for the victim mentality argument is it not?

My last sentence was however an insult aimed at my scouse brothers. Peace.

It's an fornicating absurd result. The guy blew the weight, was clearly getting beaten, then throws what looks like a deliberate headbutt and consequently gets the win. Oh, and the judging was awful too.

Smith does not get credit from me for that win..very dubious stuff.

To be fair mate, his mind was probably thinking about later that night.

You know, when he gets back to his 5 star hotel laid on by the promoter he needs to pick the the type of bird(s) to keep him company for the evening, again laid on by the promoter - there are a lot if things to consider.

I had smith winning 2 rounds max and in real play the headbutt looked deliberate but the replay it looked like he was ducking a punch and came back up either way the ref should of spotted it and it should of gone to the judges, smith isnt world class he is far from it

I have said before, I have never seen any one of the Smith brothers ever smile - not even once between them.

I am assuming that they must be popular and sell loads of tickets - which is why they get so many opportunities - but I can't understand it at all.

Suggestions here that he will jump ship but was this his last contracted fight? And surely missing weight isn't something that can sever a contract like that.

I feel gutted for Williams , that should've been his coming out party, he was excellent, he's a terrific all rounder, Smith is very fortunate

I used to think some of the stick Paul took was due to his reputation on here and I don't mind him when he's working for Sky but the more and more I read about him on twitter the more I think he has a serious chip on his shoulder, he has to argue with everyone, it doesn't matter if its a keyboard warrior troll who deserves to be ignored or a boxing fan with a valid point with constructive criticism Paul cant help but act like a pleb

Steve Lillis tweeted that he hadn't seen Smith/Williams yet so couldn't give opinion but said that if theres any doubt video technology should be used, Smigga tweets back saying " if you haven't seen it you shouldn't comment, Williams was done blah blah"

Just being a ponce, he's better off twitter

Quality rant. I agree.

The only thing I'd quibble with is "Smith is British level".
I agree with that too, BUT 'British level" is so much better than it used to be - and British fighters are so well-managed and promoted - that any decent British champ is de facto 'world class'. ie. They'll certainly be in the mix for picking up belts and being respectable challengers for the elite fighters.
