Usyk's rather average

Post by crow »

He's still using the olympic "touch" style, is content to arm punch, is overly cautious, and often can't get out of his own way to let his punches go.

At the moment he's winning because his youth which allows him to boil down a great deal of weight, as he seems a full division above his opponents.

The guy can fight but he's a big bore and he might not remain at the top for very long.

His last fight was pretty entertaining.

He seems a bit overrated, but he's good.

I don't find him boring, but I don't see him as an unbeatable force at Cruiserweight or anything. A fight between him and Mairis Breidis would be very competitive I think.

Initially I tagged Usyk as the next monster in boxing who was unbeatable in his class. I no longer think that, but not because he hasn't held up his end but rather because Cruiser has some really really good talent. Usyk and Breidis are the top of the class at the moment in my opinion. I need to see more of Gasiev as I don't know a lot about him. It's a really great time to be a CW fan :box:

I have never been on the Usyk bandwagon but how does a clear victory over a quality undefeated opponent (that should have been stopped in round 12) translate into a disappointment? Prior to this most of Usyk's current detractors felt that he would walk through Briedis.

What changed?

Usyk defeated a game, skilled boxer with a solid chin, convincingly. I like both Usyk's and Hunter's style. I look forward to seeing them in future fights in the mix with the rest of the significantly deep cruiser division.

If they don't rate Hunter as highly as you do, then it makes sense that they might think that Usyk's stock lowered after having some trouble with Hunter.

I think that his stock lowered a little. He wasn't very impressive throughout most of the fight and it's not clear how good Hunter is yet.

Fair enough, but it is not clear how good any of the new flock of cruisers are. Briedis probably has the most impressive win, completely dominating Huck, who has always been competitive, win, lose or draw.

I suppose if you had Usyk rated as the upper weight classes' Lomassiah than you cannot avoid being disappointed.

Usyks still learning. 13 fights in and to be on top of your division is no joke. Cruiser is traditionally weak imo but it's good to see a big man do a bit of boxing and work hard

True.

Cruiser is stacked at the moment, as is LHW.

I was first alarmed when he fought a fat journeyman (Knyazev or something?) and was sometimes pushed by the guy.

He tries to fight as Lomachenko without having reflexes or other abilities anywhere close to Vasyl. Going back to Anatoly Lomachenko as a trainer aggravated that even more.

As I said on here before the fight, Hunter is a very good opponent. The fight went as I expected.

Usyk just beat a top 5 cruiserweight. Hunter would have a very good chance of beating anyone else in the division.

Usyk should next fight someone who he can look good against, maybe Bellew, Gassiev or Makabu.

Briedis would be more difficult, I'd like to see the two of them clean out the rest of the CW division before fighting each other.

I would too really, but I'm not sure how long Usyk plans on staying at Cruiserweight before trying his hand as a Heavyweight so I hope that fight doesn't pass us by.

I didn't think he'd dominate cruiserweight which is why I wanted him to move up ASAP. I think he belongs at heavyweight a lot better. He's too elusive, and I have to wonder if some of the stiffs like Wilder and AJ would even land a glove on him.

Cruiserweight is just too stacked and too good. Easily, the talent there exceeds anything Usyk will find at heavyweight, minus possibly Klitschko and Povetkin.

I think Usyk's stock dropped at cruserweight, but I still think he can dominate heavyweight.

He wasn't elusive at all yesterday covering up and being pushed to ropes.

What do you mean "he can't get out of his way to let his own punches go"? He threw over 900 punches which is a shitload for a cruiserweight.

They were arm punches; and this is the pro game, not the ama.
You're not gong to get fighters out of there with those.

Not only that, but he's lackadaisical in defense, as his side to side head movement is easy to anticipate.

Fighters as tall as him with good power will have no trouble finding his chin.
I think Kudryashov gives him brain damage.

Not only those were arm punches, but also many of them were awkward. Sometimes he looked like an awkward kid fighting during a school break.

Not sure how an average fighter could be atop one of the toughest divisions in the sport, with only a handful of pro fights under his belt, nonetheless.

Yeah, he's awkward, always been so. People are just noticing this? Also is a notorious slow starter, which should be common knowledge by now. By the second half of the fight, Hunter was completely figured out, taken apart and dominated. Just another day at the office for Usyk.

Ya, he's always looked kind of clumsy, but he's obviously very effective. Glowacki had much more aesthetically pleasing form to his shots, but where did that get him?

He is obviously above average and is in top 5-6 in the division, maybe even top 3. However, that may be the most he can achieve in pro. He definitely has no business at HW.
