But the fight was stopped by Williams’ corner at the start of the 10th round due to a severe cut above his eye, which he felt was as a result of a deliberate “flying headbutt.”
That brought Williams’ 17-fight unbeaten run to an end, although Smith failed to take the vacant WBO title after coming in one pound over the 11-stone limit.

In a statement on Twitter, Williams said: “Very disappointed with outcome of the fight as I felt I was well ahead on the score cards before that flying head but landed.. cut me wide open and was just to bad to go on and take punishment as I could not see through my right eye!”
