Liam Williams releases statement following Liam Smith defeat

Liam Williams says he is “very disappointed” with what he felt was an unjust outcome after his thrilling bout with Liverpool’s Liam Smith at the weekend.

But the fight was stopped by Williams’ corner at the start of the 10th round due to a severe cut above his eye, which he felt was as a result of a deliberate “flying headbutt.”

That brought Williams’ 17-fight unbeaten run to an end, although Smith failed to take the vacant WBO title after coming in one pound over the 11-stone limit.

In a statement on Twitter, Williams said: “Very disappointed with outcome of the fight as I felt I was well ahead on the score cards before that flying head but landed.. cut me wide open and was just to bad to go on and take punishment as I could not see through my right eye!”

The pair, both promoted by allegedly, are expected to contest a rematch.

The Welshman added: “Hopefully we can get the rematch on once the cuts have healed and we both have a little rest.. allegedly is the man and I’m pretty sure he will produce the goods!”

I definitely think WIlliams got harshly treated here. There wasn't too much of a fuss made about it at the end, whereas if it had been the other way around I think the Smith's would have been going absolutely mental about it.

That was a really clear headbutt by Smith, should have got a point deducted for that as it was so blatant. The cut was already there but that was a blatant attempt to worsen it. Smith was coming on strong in the fight, but who knows what might have happened minus that cut.

There's a massive sense of entitlement about the lot of them - the Smith's and Gallagher himself. That's why i think they were lording it so much at the end - cos they believe they are entitled to win and if someone else wins then it has to come from some form of injustice against them.

Fair play to Williams for not shouting about it and making a bigger deal out of how the fight went and the fact that he was up on all the scores, but I don't think I'd have been the same in those circumstances - I think in that respect he SHOULD have been fighting his corner a bit and demanding a rematch straight away.

Quigg isn't the smartest lad admittingly. Hence why it took him a few months to figure out he needed to leave. It should have been the day after he first watched the Frampton fight back.
