Shannon Briggs vs. Fres Oquendo

Post by RScarf1 »

Anyone excited about this fight? Just kidding. It's for the WBA heavyweight title, but the WBA super heavyweight title will be at stake for Joshua vs. Klitschko. It's going to be at the Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida. Boxing events have decreased in South Florida, so people will probably go if the undercard is good. No undercard fights have been scheduled yet. If the WBA remains true to their word about consolidating titles, then the winner of Briggs vs. Oquendo and Joshua vs. Klitschko would have to fight each other.

I'm not sure if the Briggs-Oquendo fight will even get televised... and in terms of the winner getting a shot at the holder of the WBA's Super title, this could take several years (as per Danny Jacobs)… and by that time, both veterans (that are currently in their mid-forties), would have already tasted defeat and hung up their gloves.

Backyard Brawl seems like an appropriate billing for this promotion.

Fres Oquendo is the greatest. He did PEDS in Russia and beat the law suit just to one up Povetkin .

I'm wondering if this is going to be a trend by the WBA for world title fights held in Florida with one or both boxers not deserving of a title shot. Lara vs. Foreman was in Florida and now this fight. Very few boxing events are happening in Florida lately, so I guess some media will be there. There have been worse matchups in a main event bout in Florida, but I don't expect this one to be televised unless there is a great undercard. This could be like a "club show" even though a world title is at stake.

I look forward to it. will be over within 3 minutes. I like short fights, especially the way Briggs starts his fights.

Will it happen?

Will it be entertaining?

They both sux now, but it could be entertaining if Oquendo wins or does well. An old huge guy with popping veins trying to stay upright if Fres can stay in there. What's not to like?

The fight is a farce, but I'll watch it if it's televised.
At this point, there's no saying what will happen when they meet. Assuming they both make it through their training uninjured. Which, at their ages, is always a question.

This fight is happening, and I am already getting a headache from the constant "LET'S GO CHAMP!!" from Briggs. Now I'm all for confidence and age defying act's of ability and skill. I do not think that is what this fight will be about in the slightest, this is going to be a short and brutal fight. predicting a KO win by the middle rounds.

The WBA world belt at heavyweight gets passed around so readily now it may as well not exist, We've had Chagaev as the champion until he lost it against Browne who was stripped of it for drug's related reasons and Ortiz who was the interim champion but nothing came of that, then we have this happening.
Oquendo - A man who last fought in 2014 in a losing effort against Chagaev for this belt, who will next square off against Briggs - a man who's last fight was against Emilio Zarate (at the time 20/16/3).

Chaaaaammmmp!

I think they should strike a deal to stream this on social media, probably Instagram where Briggs has a huge following. I reckon it will attract in the casuals who follow the Cannon's antics...

Wasn't there a fight streamed on Twitter last week? Presumably they just make money from advertising the same as any broadcast...

Liakohvich, Mercer and Foreman - surely three good names to have on the ledger?

Even if Briggs defeats Oquendo, I don't think he is going to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, but he probably will get inducted into the Florida one.

If Briggs wins, should be a mandatory defense against George Foreman.
