Angelo Dundee on Ali vs Lennox

Post by montrealsuper »

Interesting thoughts shared by the great Angelo Dundee about his charge Ali vs Lennox Lewis http://spam.com/2017/04/06/just ... nox-lewis/ I say Lewis outboxes Ali and keeps Ali at range forcing Ali to be the one to take risks - close UD for Lennox

A prime Ali was way too fast. Easy decision or late stoppage for Ali.

Overall without writing long tedious paragraphs of explanation I just don't see Lewis beating Ali.

He spent 50 years bleeding a percentage out of one great fighter after another - somebody must have thought he was great - I myself never quite got it either - they say Leonard sought him out, not the other way round - I never recognized enough intangible gains to warrant him, at times, taking up to 30% of a fighter's purse, but he did, again and again. - Somebody must have thought him great.

Have never heard of him bleeding 50% out of fighter's earnings.
He trained Carmen Basilio who didn't have a ton of natural ability and Basilio won the middleweight title. Took over the career of a struggling middleweight named Jimmy Ellis and help win a portion of the heavyweight championship.

Had a ton of success with other fighters, some of who didn't have that much ability.

Angelo was great....there is no doubt. Maybe people should have a little bit of respect.

30% - not 50% - and wasn't it Leonard who eventually sacked him complaining he cost too much?

Alp,

I wanted to add in regards to a 50% take - that was the 'lifetime' deal Marciano had with Al Weill - they say that Marciano was so embittered by the contract that during retirement when people would offer Rocky say $2000 to attend a speaking engagement he would suggest that they pay him $500 in cash instead of a two thousand dollar check just so he could screw over Weill - he so hated Weill that he would take $500 less just to screw Weill out of his 50% ($1000) - I have always felt 'lifetime' service contacts should be illegal.

Dundee was great and you can get a feel for his greatness by his words in interviews - He knew the sport and loved the sport and without a doubt is a legendary figure and ambassador for boxing - Fakes and frauds and freeloaders are easily noticed and weeded out - Angelo Dundee is one of the greatest legendary figures of boxing history -

Both men in their Prime age and ability. It's hard but I would have to say Ali.

His speed, footwork and charisma at his best were mind blowing in the heavyweight division, add in the build up to a fight where he would either make a boxer so frustrated or angry they would eventually make mistakes in the ring against him or at least question their strategy.

Lennox Lewis was always a calm boxer, very intelligent and brilliant skill I would say was second to none at the peak of his career but against the man who set the standard for all great boxers who use strategy, skill and speed over brute force and power. It becomes one sided and I have to give it to Ali.
