Joe Joyce

Post by stujones »

My turn with the thread asking "where is Joe Joyce" - age and Olympic momentum is now ticking... If he's going to do anything as a pro he must get a move on.

I'd stick him in with David Price on his debut.

I believe he is waiting for his GB contract to run out in March, and will then turn over.

FW / BT would be my guess, fast track to British level and then look to get his crack against H Fury (provided he wins and keeps the WBO)?

I was asking the question for a while too until I found out he's waiting for his GB contract to run down. Hopefully fights for British title within the next year and a half.

Really - fighters get contracted to an amateur contract? Surely that's wrong?

I have no idea how it works and would be interested to understand what this is about.

It wouldn't surprise me that there is some kind of contractual obligation as they are being paid, however I have never heard this from any other boxers turning pro?

Same with Fowler, they have been paid, so they are under contract

All gb lads are under contract , they get a place to stay and salary etc need to contract them as they invest a lot of money in them, joe Joyce
For expample could have had a hand injury after Olympics and gb send him to
America for specialist surgery at a high cost and he came back and says am going pro, that's why contracts are in place also .

Joyce isn't going to do anything in the pros. He got KO'd twice in the amateurs. He's the next David Price.

'funded' not paid, there is a subtle difference. It's the same in all sports.

Joshua got KO'd in the amateurs too.

At least Joyce didn't have head guards on, he took a few big shots during his Olympic run and stood up to them.

I'm not saying he has the durability and chin of the average Ghanaian or Argentine fighter, but he doesn't look anywhere near as fragile as Pricey.

Yeah maybe that was going a bit overboard, I still don't rate his chin though.

Getting KO'd in the amateurs raises some serious questions with me, Joshua's whiskers need a stern test yet and I actually don't think they'll hold up. Got a feeling Wlad is going to KO him late on.

Has he been hurt apart from those two fights? With Price there were loads of examples of him being dropped or rocked, all the way until his last bout, but it's not necessarily a glaring issue if it only happened once or twice..

Joyce is crude, but he's very strong, has a hell of a tank for a big man, and doesn't give me the same sense of marked fragility that Price did even before turning over. Unlike Price he also has wins over all the other top amateur SHWs of his period (Yoka, Dychko, Hrgovic), and having followed him since 2012 it's clear that he's gotten much better over the last few years..

I certainly don't see him being on the same level as AJ, but I think he can do better than Price. He sure needs to get a move on it though...

It's all about expectations. I'd be amazed if he won a world title, even in today's climate. I can see him winning the British though and then possibly working his way to a title shot maybe? Time isn't on his side and his style means he will probably drop a loss or two to fighters you might not expect him to. He's pretty easy to hit but he's a bit of a beast and I suspect he isn't enjoyable to fight one bit! Big, powerful strong lump with a very good work rate who keeps coming forward? No thanks!

He'll wear a lot of fighters down. I'd fancy him to drown Yoka in the pros based on what I've seen. I think Yoka is a little fragile though and the pros won't suit him, unless he gets the same officiating he did as an am of course, in which case he'll be hard to beat. :TU:

Hrgovic is the one I fancy to do something big in the pro game.

Joyce seems a nice chap but I too also don't see him doing much as a pro.

His style is dreadful.

Who has he signed with? When Lawrence O loves up to HW he'll be the man to watch

I struggle to think Lawrence can naturally put on the required muscle mass needed to compete with the likes of Joshua and co.

He seems more basketball player than heavyweight boxer genetically. (Although I suppose the same could be said about Wilder).

At his height you would imagine he needs to get up to 105 at least

I hope he does well. He's a great guy and whilst maybe not polished, he's big, strong and determined. His story is good too. Went to lose weight and became an amateur star.

As he boxed for earlsfield, I will be cheering him on. Funnily enough first time I saw him at a show years ago in Earlsfield, he was in his street clothes and I had been on a bender the night before so was super paranoid. I was sure he was staring at me. He had his hood up, is a big guy and when not smiling looks very intimidating with his facial scars (I think they happened in a childhood accident.)

I felt really uncomfortable and said to a friend - "why is that big guy staring at me like that!? He's freaking me out.... what have I done?"

My friend laughed and told me I was join mad and said "that's Joe, he's the friendliest guy around". Suddenly I could relax my sphincter!

I hope he does well.

He doesn't have the typical amateur style, point scorer, he actually likes to get behind his punches, which is a bit more friendly towards pro boxing. A lot successful olympians these days amount to at least domestic level so I'd expect him to be mixing that at least. Biggest concern is that he's left it a little late to turn pro. Good luck to him

Re chin, loads of amateurs have been put down or stopped. Bowe, haye, Vitali (kick boxing). Price was always clearly chubby but most others have at some point. It's learning your trade, doesn't mean you're glass jawed.

RevJoshua chin and whoever said it needs testing, the idea is not to get chinned! Who wants to take a haye maker flush so we can find out if you can take a shot. He took Whytes best and come through a shakey spell. Granted whytes power looks domestic level. Point is he's not glass jawed, but if Joshua, wilder, haye or Wlad etc put one on your chin and your guard is down and you're not ready to roll with it, you're going down. It's more important if you can see shots coming

I would expect Joyce's style to translate well to the professional ranks and I wouldn't be too concerned that he's tasted canvas a couple of times. It would certainly be surprising were he not in the mix for at least British and Commonwealth honours after a dozen or so fights. As for how far he can go, I can see him picking up the EBU and possibly getting a title shot if the belts stay fractured as they are now...

I would have thought we would have heard something by now!
Watching Eddie's video with IFL yesterday at the Buatsi press conference I got the impression that Joyce wouldn't be signing with him.

He said something along the lines of "we have got all the olympians we were after " and "we have got the most exciting GB guy from the Olympics "

Sounded like either he forgot Joyce hadn't been announced OR he hasn't got him!?

With Eddie's interview yesterday, he mentioned Buatsi had a lot of options, so I would think Joyce has a fair few as well.

Maybe Eddie was slow rolling Joyce, making him think?

Be great to have Joyce on BT/BN. Would be guaranteed a few KO's with him, Dubois and Yarde on the same bill :TU:
