Calzaghe wants Toney

Post by Neri »

http://www.fightnews.com

WBO/IBF super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe says he wants to fight James Toney, who once held Calzaghe's 168lb title. Toney is now fighting as a heavyweight and weighed 237 lbs. for Saturday's draw with Hasim Rahman. "He's welcome to come back down to super-middle and challenge for his old title - which at least I can proudly fit around my waist - but I don't think anyone can drag him out of his training camp at McDonalds and get him into serious training in a boxing gym," said Calzaghe. "I would love to kick his arse now because I just missed out on doing it in the 90's when I was coming through but I'm sure as a young kid I would still have knocked him about. He should lose the flab and fight me because he is still a name in the sport and it would look great on my record next to a W and KO. Instead of doing weights with Twinkie bars and drinking Kool Aid he should get onto the salad, pasta and water and whip himself into shape because he'd need to be against me."

Joe,

Put on two and half stone and fight Toney for the title. The biggest title in world sport.

Despite the draw, I still think Toney will hold a meaningful version by the years end.

Empty threats to a guy he knows he will never get in the ring with...good job, Joe....that's class right there.

Won't say a thing to Kessler, but is jumping at every "Antonio Tarver threat" he can muster.

That one has the whiff of the SN press release about it. I hope Calzaghe didn't have any input into it, because it's a daft statement. Toney would have to cut off his arms and legs to make 168 these days.

What a load of old bollocks this is, I'm all for hype, but this is one of the most pointless statements from a fighter I've ever heard.

Don't think Calzaghe-Toney is something i would like to see at any weight, Toney would have to slim down to an anorexic SM which will never happen and who would want to see Calzaghe bulk up to become a Heavy? Not me...Calzaghe-Tarver please!

Why Tarver with Kessler out there? The guy spent 41 fights at one weight, why not finish the job?

I don't believe any of that came from Calzaghe's mouth tbh, can you imagine a Welshman using the words Twinkie and Kool Aid ? I can't.

Let's see Joe move up to cruiserweight then, I'll bet Toney could make 200, then lets see how Keen he'd be.

I wish Calzaghe would just concentrate on the people fighting in the division now, now talk shit about a guy who eat his way out of the divsion a decade ago.

James can't make 200...that was his weight in HS from what I hear...to expect him to make that 20 years later is too much.

Read that last part...he also didn't weigh 260-280 before camp for that fight either. Notice where his weight has gone every fight since then....

UP UP UP!!!

Yes it's bizzare, after years in the wilderness eating like a bastard and losing fights because of poor conditioning, he works his way to a title shot, and beats Jirov hands down in a fantastic performance, and looks in great shape. He then destroys Holyfield weighing 215, and looking trim and fit, then parlays that victory by coming in bigger and bigger in his next three fights.

At 215-220, Toney is a formidable heavyweight capable of giving most genuine heavyweights a rough night. I'd fancy him to take Rahman if he came in lighter, and more to the point fitter.

If he came in at 215, he kicks the shit out of Rahman. Problem is we'll never see him that weight again.

people, the news has been taken out of context. calzaghe is hitting back at toney's statement that joe can't fight and has never beaten anyone & that lacy would crush him. you can see the whole thing on warren's site. it's all a bit of fun

This story is probably made up.

Like viciousmaussa said thats the possible reason.
Shut up and fight Mike Kessler.
Do you want Kessler to lose his WBA title? :P :TU:

I agree with Neri since when has a guy who lived in Wales mostof his life saying stuff like kool aid and Twinkie bars?

Shouldn't someone tell Joe that you shouldn't start trash talking with James Toney?

I personally don't think Joe Calzaghe had anything to do with that statement!
