London's population is 8.6 million compared to the population of the Republic of Ireland of 4.5 million.lillywhite14 wrote:For example, London has a similar population to Ireland, yet there's been more boxing world champions from London than Ireland. Nobody ever talks about the 'fightin Londoners'![]()
Note - Not in any way shape or form denying Irelands impressive boxing achievements etc
Lets compare London's biggest draw in Anthony Joshua to Ireland's biggest draw in Conor Mc Gregor. Is Ireland overrated now?
Also, how many fighters are be able to get their first World title shot in their own backyard because they are such a draw that Katie Taylor is in Ireland?

Re: Most overrated boxing city
I was including all of Ireland population wise ( around 6 million odd although even then, not quite London granted
), and those abroad that see themselves as Irish ( been a couple of Americans who won world titles who see themselves as Irish for example ) when I compared total world champions/olympic champs etc
If I take away all the Northern Irish and overseas Irish champs then it's not particularly close
Taylor is the golden girl and has been for years. Shes great. Conor? He's a Kardashian. Exciting fighter though, despite that not being what he is famous for. Fair play to him though, he's taking advantage of the current shallow, celeb obsessed world and made himself a fair few quid!
Hatton had a bigger following than both. Does that make Manchester bigger and better than the whole of Ireland? ( p4p it probably is...'fightin Mancunians' anyone?
)
Obviously I jest, and as I say, Ireland produce plenty of good boxers, especially in recent years. The Yank connection ( its massively popular to be part Irish ) contributes to why they have the overstated reputation for being 'fightin men' and all that malarky. You'd think it was Cuba though the way people go on!

Re: Most overrated boxing city
I've seen West Yorkshire listed as high up amongst urban areas (e.g. alongside Greater London, West Midlands, etc.). Never seen Leeds listed third amongst actual cities though. Probably depends how you measure it thoughmickey1975 wrote:All the ones I've seen have Leeds third.Ginger one to watch wrote:Population of English cities
1-London

3-Manchester
4-Newcastle
5-Sheffield
6-Liverpool
7-Leeds
So Leeds is actually 7th,8th if you want to include Glasgow from a British perspective.

Quality. I like the quote of PC Wynn Gin. "Nans are loved more in this great city than any other, that they are forced behind a sofa through gunfire goes against everything we have fought for"chiggsy wrote:Boys i'm going to expose a myth that we often laugh about on here about scousers...

Re: Most overrated boxing city
I'm going to say New York.
Arguably the greatest fighting city of all time but recently they have the magnificent arena in Brooklyn. Barclays Centre.
They have had some quality shows/cards mostly featuring popular local fighters. As far as I'm aware it hasn't sold out once.
The glory days of the Garden seem a long way away.

Re: Most overrated boxing city
I thought long and hard about this and came to this conclusion.... all of them.
Re: Most overrated boxing city
Or 'what city would you like to have a lazy pop at, because of some daft inter-city rivalry which is probably based on football allegiance?'
Re: Most overrated boxing city
All the figures are misleading, it's very difficult to get an accurate population for any city because of differences in what's included. As an example, Preston's official population is 130-140,000, in reality it's around 200,000, maybe a bit more than that because large parts of South Ribble would be classed as Preston by most people, but not for administrative purposes and it also gives some of the ten bob millionaires south of the river the opportunity to try and sound posh by saying they're not from Preston, they're from South Ribble.mercman wrote:It does depend on definitions. Manchester is bigger than Leeds if you're talking about Greater Manchester but that includes Salford, Bury, Oldham and various other places. City for city Leeds is bigger though and Leeds is, I believe, the third largest city in the country (behind London and Birmingham).J-C wrote:I've seen West Yorkshire listed as high up amongst urban areas (e.g. alongside Greater London, West Midlands, etc.). Sheffield is, I think, slightly smaller than Leeds, and Liverpool and Newcastle are substantially so. I suspect whoever compiled that list has included the rest of Merseyside with Liverpool and maybe lumped Gateshead in with Newcastle, which seems to be happening a lot nowadays although the two places are different cities. It's a bit like combining Leeds with Bradford.
In Leeds case, the 'City of Leeds' figure of 720,000 actually includes the wider area, going out as far as Wetherby, Guiseley and Otley, which should be marked in red on this link - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Cit ... -1.5023113
At the last census the main built up area had a population of 475,000, which is probably a more accurate figure and would put Leeds in 7th or 8th place on most lists, but given the inaccuracies with most places that isn't a true representation either.
The difficulty is that for some places the area included is far wider than the city itself, like Leeds, and others like Manchester and Glasgow it doesn't cover the entire city.
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Gla ... -4.2513729
Glasgow, area should be in red in the map on the link, has a population of just over 600,000, but when you include the areas just outside the Glasgow City Council that you could cross into simply by walking down the street, like Clydebank, Bearsden, Bishopbriggs and Cambuslang, and it jumps to at least 800,000.
