No more great heavyweight fights ...

Post by Sequitorian »

... not that Klitschko / Joshua wasn't a really good fight ...

... it just wasn't a great fight, in that there weren't all that many clean hard shots landed ...

... not like ... say ... the Thrilla-in-Manila ... where Ali and Frazier were both landing hellacious punches throughout the fight ...

... but heavyweights now are all super-heavyweights ... better-conditioned, more athletic and much much bigger ...

... and almost any time one of them lands a clean hard shot the other guy goes down ...

... and they are both so aware of that that they are almost too cautious ...

... they just hit too hard ...

... so great, great heavyweight title fights are now a thing of the past ...

... never again ...

It would only take a couple of hellacious shots to end it from either fighter. Good value it went 11

I think what's usually lacking in heavyweight fights is give & take. One guy gets hit but comes back and lands his own. Guys are probably much stronger than years ago so everyone is a pretty big puncher. The days of a George Chuvalo taking loads of punches & winning are probably gone. Boxers are much more cautious because the power is probably greater. It's too easy to get hurt. One guy lands a big punch & the other guy is hurt. Ali vs Frazier is an amazing fight but it's a different situation. In that fight you have one guy who had a decent chin, good power, & a willingness to take punches to land his own vs a light punching, fast fighter, who possessed a granite chin & the heart of a lion. To me, that's a recipe for a great give & take fight.

This was the best heavyweight fight I've seen in a long time. I'm not sure I'd call it great but the best in a long time. There's no way both fighters could've landed the volume of punches that were in Ali / Frazier or Bowe / Holyfield. The punches are just too heavy I think. I watched a good brawl & I'm happy with it though.
