On This Day: Floyd Mayweather proves he can take a punch

Floyd Mayweather survived scare to dominate Shane Mosley in 2010

Floyd Mayweather overcame a rocky start to win a lopsided decision over 38-year-old Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on this day seven years ago (May 1, 2010). The unbeaten Mayweather endured the rockiest moments of his career in the second round when a huge right hand from Mosley buckled his knees a minute in to the session. He was forced to grab and spoil to weather the storm.

Shane landed a similar punch again later in the round, but couldn’t build on the success as Mayweather regained control to outbox his veteran opponent for the rest of the fight. Two judges scored it 119-109 for Mayweather, while the third had it 118-110. All officials had him winning everything past the second round.

I don't think Floyd proved he could take a punch as much as he proved he was a cool head under fire and very smart... The same as Joshua proved Saturday when he was badly hurt but didn't get hit with another big punch which would have put him out.

Floyd had a stronger chin than his father or uncle had. He inherited those genes from his mother's side I would guess. It's a rare punch that connects with such perfection that it's like a home run that soars out of the stadium and lands on 5th Ave. 90% of boxers will not get hit with a Martinez-Williams type punch in their whole career. But you might get tagged with a couple of them -- like the guy who won the lottery twice.

Even Joseph Parker is going out if he gets hit with a perfect shot like that -- or 3 or 4 really concussive blows within a minute or 2 are going to get him out. But you have a chance to save yourself if you're hurt and clear your head -- like Joshua did -- even facing a good finisher. Does the other guy have the killer instinct? Mosley finished off punching bag Margarito after he was told Margo's gloves were loaded. Powerful motivation helps you sustain killer energy for that length of time. Sometimes it's hate that drives you, but the most powerful motivation is a burning desire to be great.

Mosley pulled his horns in after he was badly hurt in the 2nd round of the 1st Vernon Forrest fight.. Forrest won the rest of the rounds easily.. Floyd took note of that fight and he attacked Mosley like crazy in the 3rd round... He didn't hurt Mosley bad but he ripped Mosley with some hard shots in the 3rd -- and Mosley was rather tame the rest of the way. It was uneventful ... as Mosley behaved himself and Floyd steered the ship into calm seas.

The thing to take from that is Mosley didn't sustain a monster attack on Floyd when he had him going.. The odds are in your favor when you have somebody hurt and wobbling around. Don't worry about punching yourself out. Punch your opponent out -- especially of he's a master boxer and this is your golden opportunity.. There was no danger of Mosley punching himself out because he never went really hard for the finish..

When Billy Joe Saunders floored Andy Lee twice in the 3rd he didn't try extra hard to finish him off.. He was thinking, "Halleluiah!! a 3-point round for me. I just won the title baby." --- Wladimir was asked why he didn't attack Joshua harder when he had him badly hurt. "I had him. I thought I was going to win the fight." In fact, Joshua was talking to Wlad -- telling him to be careful not to punch himself out. More the ploy of a veteran than a kid with 18 fights. When it was Joshua's turn to close the show he cut lose with all guns blazing -- like a true killer.
