Expect AJ PPV to be priced at £25 next time out
Re: Joshua Has Made It.
It means a lot, Crusader. I've not heard a fight in England between two non Americans mentioned before. It's just completely unheard of - to me.crusader wrote:I don't think a cursory mention on the radio means too much, and it's not like AJ will stand out in the US for being a big, athletic black guy.
And AJ is a big, athletic black guy WITH A BRITISH ACCENT. That's the difference.
I get between 10 & 50 people a day mentioning mine. OK so half of them think I'm Australian & others think I'm Irish but it's a big deal here having a British accent.
Again, I ain't saying he's a shoo-in but the potential is there & it's better than at anytime this Millennium for heavyweight boxing to be pushed back into the US Mainstream.
Re: Joshua Has Made It.
It's a huge leap from getting a passing mention on the radio, to getting 1m PPV buys. You also said before that no one in the US cared about the fight, and that's probably in line with the situation here; there was not one word about it from anyone I know personally.
Americans have seen about a zillion big, athletic black guys, and I don't think adding a British accent changes things much.

Re: Joshua Has Made It.
It could be argued that Golovkin is sort of financially a nomad. And Klitschko had to bend over for the first time, otherwise he'd still be fighting in Germany. As he said though, even after loosing to Fury, everything just got bigger & better for him. The Fury loss was a blessing for him in a way.Crease wrote:I disagree. Could AJ be PPV in the USA? His biggest feck up the other night was thanking every country but the USA.
I agree the UK is consistently putting on big shows, which in turn equals big money. But these are only big in the UK.

They have seen a zillion big athletic black guys, but they haven't seen any that can really fight and knock people out for a good ten years though have they!?
Big, aggressive exciting heavyweights will always be popular, especially in the USA. The promotion teams need to get it going.
What's Wilder's popularity like in the US? Do they see him as a bit of a fraud?

Boxing is small time in the states. I would wager your average yank has no ideal who Wilder is.

He's not that well known. He needs a big opponent to make the breakthrough.

These fights are huge throughout the other countries that hold HRH Liz as their reigning monarch.
The AJ fight was huge in Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Canada, Jamaciamon, etc etc
Wilder is selling out 5,000+ venues throughout Alabama!

True. It's mainly the Hispanics who are interested.forcefraser wrote:Boxing is small time in the states. I would wager your average yank has no ideal who Wilder is.
Mayweather did a lot of damage. Arrogant persona coupled with a dull style is the worst advert for the sport.
Re: Joshua Has Made It.
His numbers are decent by current American standards, but hardly through the roof, and nowhere near the level of someone whose reach goes beyond people who are already boxing fans. The only fighters who have done that in the States recently are Manny, Floyd, Canelo, and maybe Cotto, and the latter two have built in Hispanic fan bases, while the first two built their profiles majorly through fighting Oscar. I'm not sure if a casual, uneducated viewer could differentiate much between Wilder beating up a scrub, and Joshua stopping a top HW like Wlad.lillywhite14 wrote:They have seen a zillion big athletic black guys, but they haven't seen any that can really fight and knock people out for a good ten years though have they!?

Most Americans probably have no idea who Wilder is, and certainly they'd be unlikely to know Joshua. His fight with Breazeale did about 200k viewers on Showtime, which is pretty damn bad!

The TV numbers for those regions would be interesting. I assume you are in NZ? Was this on terrestrial TV, or a sports package? And he media, how big was it?
Re: Joshua Has Made It.
The fight was not huge in Canada at all--total nonsense.

Monster events for every fight from now on
His next move should be joining that annoying fat pudendum James Corden on his chat show. He somehow seems to have made a bit of a splash in the States. Would be good exposure

They wouldnt need to build him. He's already built.TheCobra wrote:Don't understand anyone saying that. What have ITV proved in terms of ability to build a boxer, build a profile, do the PR and get someone to superstar level? ITV don't give a crap about boxing. A lot of damage? The guy did huge PPV numbers. Particularly impressive because he's black and not Hispanic.Taansend wrote:True. It's mainly the Hispanics who are interested.forcefraser wrote:Boxing is small time in the states. I would wager your average yank has no ideal who Wilder is.

Wlad has been a good American TV draw, so the ratings should at least comfortably surpass the Martin and Breazeale fights.

Another article on BS saying that Joshua is only going to fight 2 times a year from now on, which is interesting.

Re: Joshua Has Made It.
Work buddy of mine in New York I asked if he watched the fight was like "fornicate Klitschko, I never watch his fights. Whose this Joshua again ?.....oh right gold medal...yeah yeah.". He did enjoy it after I hassled him to watch the replay. This is a guy who watches alot of NY boxing live and buys pretty much any PPV. He knows and likes European fighters like Kovalev and Lomachenko who regularly fight in the states but the careers of Joshua and guys like Carl Froch seemed to have passed him by. Alot of casual US boxing fans can't be arsed if the fights are on at weird times for them
New Yorkers can be tough to please but AJ has long way to go to conquer the states tbh. He needs to have some high profile fights there, problem is there is barely any US big names at heavy. He might as well just stay here.

Exactly my point. People paid to see him lose. No coincidence that most of his later opponents were Hispanic.IT wrote:A lot of damage? The guy did huge PPV numbers. But most of the fights were dull and that caused a lot of damage. People would rather watch UFC than him nullifying his opponent.
Boxing needs an exciting charismatic fighter (in America) because we had Mayweather, the Klitschko's and Hopkins as the main ones over the last decade.
GGG is exciting but doesn't have crossover appeal.
Joshua does.
Re: Joshua Has Made It.
I'm in a brewery and three consecutive sports shows have shown the Joshua Klitschko uppercut.
The title on one was BOXINGS NEXT BIG DEAL
There's a buzz over here I haven't felt in years

All that buzz over a UK fight that only did 659k live in the US? Consider yourself lucky, because there's hardly anything about it here in Vancouver or on Canadian sports shows
By the way, how long have you been in that brewery for
