World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman has refused to engage Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in a war of words.
Sulaimán arrived to Las Vegas on Tuesday night and was caught by surprise when informed of Canelo's statements.
"When I arrived in Las Vegas, I was aware of Canelo Álvarez's statements: Canelo should concentrate on his fight and out of respect for boxing and Mexico - I do not consider it appropriate to enter into controversies that hurt the importance of this great fight between two Mexicans," Sulaiman told ESPN Deportes.
"The only thing that the Canelo has received from the WBC is friendship and unconditional support, the only intention is to promote Mexico and its culture."

Re: Reports: Canelo Rejects WBC's Cinco De Mayo Title
"Canelo: When The Golovkin Fight Happens - NO WBC Title!"
MGM Grand, LAS VEGAS - Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is not very happy with the World Boxing Council.
As reported by BS.com's Rick Reeno, Canelo Alvarez rejected the WBC's commemorative "Huichol" belt because he felt the WBC made the belt for their own promotional interests.
Alvarez is still fuming over the way the WBC handled his mandatory situation with Gennady Golovkin. Canelo and his promoter Golden Boy were in Florida while All Star Boxing's case against him and his current promoter was being litigated during the time frame of the mandated deadline.
"They tried to say I am ungrateful of what they have done for me when nothing is further from the truth. Above all else I am grateful. That's why I have the same team since I started. I am very appreciative of my team," said Alvarez.
"When they said I left the title vacant and they said said I gave it to Golovkin I had a lot of things going on. When they gave me a 15 day deadline to resolve the fight we were in Miami in court. We had a lot going on and they said I was afraid of Golovkin or whatever. I'm not afraid of anyone."
Canelo reiterated several times that he has no issues with facing Golovkin and that a fight of that magnitude takes time to put together. He also said that if he faces the unbeaten knockout artist that only the WBA, IBF, and IBO titles will be at stake.
"If this fight happens it will happen without the WBC. For all of the other titles but not theirs. Why? Because of the way they treated me. Why did they make all these demands when they knew I was occupied by the case in court at that time," said Alvarez.

"Canelo explains dismissal of ‘Cinco de Mayo’ title"
Canelo confirmed when speaking to reporters upon his arrival at the MGM Grand on Tuesday afternoon that if he should be that winner, he would not accept the title.
“From the very beginning the WBC wanted to be involved in this fight and we said no because this fight is not for a world title,” Canelo said. “We knew something was going to come up. [Mauricio Sulaiman] came up with this belt and they used it against me so I can look like the bad guy.”
Canelo’s rift with the WBC dates back to when Canelo held their middleweight title after defeating Miguel Cotto in October 2015. The WBC instituted a 15-day deadline for Canelo to come to an agreement with Gennady Golovkin... Canelo refused to be forced into making a decision on short notice and relinquished the title (after defending the belt against Amir Khan last May) while delivering some harsh words aimed at the WBC.
“I won that title based on sacrifice, hard training and beating a great fighter like Cotto just so [Sulaiman] can hand it over to a guy who didn’t even fight for it? You’re going to tell me that’s respectful?” Canelo asked incredulously.... Canelo has made his stance clear and he doesn’t appreciate how the WBC has handled the situation.
“The WBC is saying I’m ungrateful. I’m very grateful and very loyal. But [Sulaiman] was pressuring me on a 15-day basis to make a decision on GGG and I had problems in Miami,” Canelo said, referencing his lawsuit with All-Star Boxing. “He made it look like I was afraid of GGG.”

So basically Mauricio is admitting that the WBC has and always will favour Mexicans. So much for calling it the World Boxing Council.Ruthless-RKO wrote:World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman has refused to engage Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in a war of words.

Well the WBC headquarters is based in Mexico City. I do agree their is a partiality exhibited by the WBC. Absolutely. It's rather obvious.Baby Face Finster wrote:So basically Mauricio is admitting that the WBC has and always will favour Mexicans.
