Georges Carpentier vrs Battling Siki-Foul or Phooey ?

Post by Caractacus »

I had read somewhere(breifly) that Jack Johnson had done a 6 round exhibition with Battling Siki
in Quebec Canada back in 1923.
Does anyone have any more info concerning it ?
are there any photographs of it ?
(it sounded like something that could have potentially gotten out of hand).

According to an October 3, 1923 news item with a Shelbrooke, Quebec dateline in the October 3, 1923 edition of the Vancouver Daily World (Vancouver, British Columbia) on Newspapers.com, Battling Siki and Jack Johnson "gave an interesting exhibition here last night. Although completely outclassed by his heavier opponent, Siki ripped into his opponent with commendable force."

Don't you think there would have been more interest in this exhibition?
Because I don't think it is even mentioned in Geoffry Ward's book.
where are the newspaper accounts of it ?

BTW Does anyone know why the beginning of the sixth round of Georges Carpentier vrs Battling Siki (September 1922)
appears to be "lost"footage ?
(or is it ?)

because Georges Carpentier looks (almost) perfectly fine going back to his corner at the end of round 5 here, but then all the sudden there is a jump cut when round 6 resumes in the footage here.
(btw best to watch this with the sound off)

check this out, when the fight film resumes for round 6 Carpentier is already in Ski's corner and there appears to be some kind of discussion as he
going on as he is walking away when all the sudden Battling Siki clocks him with a wild left.

Reportedly before the fight Battling Siki had told reporters that he planned on knocking out Georges Carpentier out in the first round
and then fight for the heavyweight championship
"Tell Jack Dempsey that he's my next meat"
he was reported as saying.

So since by the time he had Jack Johnson and no longer was a champion,
you would think he wanted to try and prove something by defeating Jack Johnson
if only in an exhibition.(one woukd think)

Sounds like one newspaper breifly quoting another newspaper from the other side of the country in a tidbit.
Is there a French translation from the Quebec newspapers ?

There were other newspapers which had items about Jack Johnson and Battling Siki in Canada at the time.

Interesting enough,
Jack Johnson also had done an exhibition with Georges Carpentier,
back in September 1911 at Magic City,Paris France
(Carpentier was still a welterweight and only 17 years old)
Carpentier would also later co-star in a film with Jack Johnson,
Jack Johnson's adventures in Paris (1913)
where Carpentier(under another name faces Johnson in a bout at the end).

Originally the refereree wanted to disqualify Battling Siki for 'tripping' Georges Carpenteir in the 6th round.
But watch the film closely at about 9:22.
It looks to me like Battling Siki may have actually kneed Carpentier in the groin with his left leg
What do you think ?

yea, I changed the heading of this thread, because the original subject recieved such a luke-warm response
and the sound of one hand clapping.
So did any of y'all watch this film ?
If so, Does it look to you like Battling Siki actually either made a 'trip" or a kick to the leg or a swift Kick to Carpentier's 'Nads?
(or perhaps even all three)
what you think APerno ?
You appear to be somewhat of a halfway intelligent person posting here nowadays.

Has anyone here read any of the autobiographies of Georges Carpentier ?
Carpentier by Himself published in English in 1955,
and Mes 80 rounds published(in French) in 1976.
what did he have to say about this fight in those books ?

Never read the book, but it may be interesting.
As for the fight, it was hard to tell what was going on. Lost track of how many times they went down. How many were actually ruled knockdowns? Couldn't tell what happened at the end either. What a wild fight.

Kind of funny this gets brought up every couple of years. Watch the whole fight, watch Carpentier blatantly foul throughout, then complain that Siki literally didnt follow the script in this famous fix double cross. Karma.
