WBO: If Canelo Wants, He'll Be Mandatory To Saunders-Khurtsidze
Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez has been given a literal red carpet by the World Boxing Organization (WBO).
If he wins Saturday's fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the WBO has given him the right to decide if he wants to head back to junior middleweight to defend his WBO world title or get a direct shot at the organization's current champion in the middleweight division.
This information was confirmed by the President of WBO, Puerto Rico's Francisco 'Paco' Valcárcel, who based his decision on the privilege granted by his organization to boxers who have been named as "super champion."
In the last two days, BS.com has published several articles where Canelo explained his anger at the WBC. The Mexican star had a falling out with the sanctioning body last year after vacating their middleweight belt.
"Canelo is a super champion to us and he's the mandatory challenger to any of the titles he wants to look for. He has that privilege. The doors are open for him," explained 'Paco' Valcárcel to Carlos Narvaez.
"Saunders will fight with Khurtsidze in July and if Canelo wants to go for that title - we will order the fight against the defending champion and he would be the mandatory challenger."

If he wins. If he loses, then he can only defend his WBO junior middleweight title.

If he loses it wouldn't change anything the WBO has stated.RScarf1 wrote:If he wins. If he loses, then he can only defend his WBO junior middleweight title.

I’ve had the opinion, for a very long time now, that Canelo will choose to face Billy Joe Saunders if K2 play hardball, by asking for too much money during the contract negotiations for the GGG fight.
Golovkin rejected the opportunity to face Saunders, because he didn’t want to risk losing the opportunity to accept the Canelo bout. This decision, in the long-term, may have weakened his position during the ongoing fight discussions between Golden Boy and K2.
If Canelo captures the WBO world title from Billy Joe Saunders on the 16th September, instead of facing Golovkin, then he can command a bigger share of the purse should their fight be postponed until the 5th May, 2018, due to the fact that all the belts in the middleweight division will be on the line. Alvarez will bring more to the negotiation table, in addition to a big payday, he'll also present an opportunity to unify the division.

What is his SMW catch weight fight with no WBO involvement has to do with a MW mandatory position? Khurt should sue WBO if he is replaced with Canelo.

He'd be replacing Ryota Murata, not Khurtsidze who will either be champion or recently defeated challenger by the time this is important.boxing_rocks wrote:What is his SMW catch weight fight with no WBO involvement has to do with a MW mandatory position? Or BJS gets injured and Khurt is still a mandatory.punchoutsb wrote:He'd be replacing Ryota Murata, not Khurtsidze who will either be champion or recently defeated challenger by the time this is important.boxing_rocks wrote:What is his SMW catch weight fight with no WBO involvement has to do with a MW mandatory position? If BJS gets injured and his fight gets scrapped to let Canelo in then I agree, he should sue the WBO.boxing_rocks wrote:Or BJS gets injured and Khurt is still a mandatory.punchoutsb wrote:He'd be replacing Ryota Murata, not Khurtsidze who will either be champion or recently defeated challenger by the time this is important.boxing_rocks wrote:What is his SMW catch weight fight with no WBO involvement has to do with a MW mandatory position? This might seem like red carpet treatment, but I'm pretty sure it's a WBO rule that a champion can walk straight into a title fight if they choose to go up/down a division?
Crawford went straight from being WBO Lightweight champion to a fight for the WBO Light-Welterweight title in his first outing at 140.
Loma challenged for the 130lb WBO belt in his first fight moving up from 126lbs where he held the WBO title.
Canelo's belt isn't on the line for the Chavez fight so win or lose he's the WBO Light-Middleweight champion and can therefore go straight into a title shot at 160.

Yes, it's standard for the WBO. I remember that they also ordered Andrade-Korobov for the vacant 160 title, but Andrade eventually decided not to move up.

Fighting for a vacant title is one thing, but moving a long waiting mandatory to replace him with a guy from another weight class seems unfair. Are you sure that there is a formal WBO rule for that?
Re: WBO: If Canelo Wants, He'll Be Mandatory To Saunders-Khurtsidze
I haven't read the official WBO guidelines, but it seems they've generally made it easy for their champ in one division to fight for the title in the next division up. This is a statement from a WBO official about Andrade-Korobov:
“Basically, what happened here is that we had petitions on behalf of both Demetrius Andrade and B.J. Saunders, and taking all matters into consideration, the WBO World Championship Committee decided to rule in favor of Andrade in light of our rules and existing precedent, which is to give that consideration to our world champions who are moving up in weight so that they may vie for that title in the next division up,”

Read the article again and pay attention this time... you'll quickly realise that the WBO's proposition doesn't affect Khurtsidze in any way.
