Post by Autobarn »

jones is apparently going to feature on a show in the summer, featuring - Evander Holyfield, Virgil Hill and Roy Jones vs different opponents. proposed venues include Boise, Idaho; Fargo, ND; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Acapulco, Mexico and Ixtapa, Mexico.

so i doubt he challenges Calzaghe. thank FYCK for that

Bizzarely, Virgil Hill is probably in the best nick now. Maybe him and RJJ could get it on at cruiser?

I firmly believe it's far more likely he'll face Calzaghe than engage in this 'cowboy' roadshow.
Look at the list of venues for Pete's sake - can you really imagine any of them offering the sort of money Jones Jr could earn facing Calzaghe in Cardiff, not to mention the title shot.
What serious promoter would be looking at these venues, none of which have a track record of staging fights or clear financial benefits eg a casino link.
And as someone who has lived in Dubai for nearly seven years I can tell you categorically that the idea it could be staged here in the summer is laughable - the temperature hits the high 40s and the city comes to a standstill as everyone flees to Europe, and no events take place during that period as it would be financial suicide.
The whole thing stinks - if Jones Jr is going anywhere, it's to Cardiff, in my opinion.

yeah but things have gone very quiet regarding Calzaghe-Jones negotiations. maybe this is an acknowledgement that Jones is damaged goods. you never know, Jones could face Hill for his cruiserweight title, would be a decent earner in Fargo ND

that proposed card is in the rumor stage only...when they talk venues in 3 different countries it usually ends up being just that---talk!! especially since rich danner has never even promoted a boxing match before---ANYWHERE!!!

this is the same kind of nonsense as the foreman-holmes fight that never happened!!

not to say that jones-calzaghe will happen, but if it doesnt it wont be because of this idle talk from a totally inexperienced "promoter"...

I think the latest from Fightnews.com confirms my stance - reeks of bull:

UPDATE: Fightnews has confirmed that former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield has had discussions with the promotional group below, but Holyfield has not signed anything as reported in the Idaho Statesman newspaper. In addition, the camp of WBA cruiserweight champion Virgil Hill has notified Fightnews.com that nothing has been agreed to or signed in regard to the proposed card. The Idaho Statesman newspaper is reporting that Evander Holyfield, Virgil Hill and possibly Roy Jones Jr., could be fighting on a big card this summer. Ritch Danner of a Las Vegas-based firm named Sports and Entertainment Media Inc., told the paper that potential sites for the card are Boise, Idaho; Fargo, ND; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Acapulco, Mexico and Ixtapa, Mexico.

I was reviewing old posts.......the fact that the Roy Jones event DID happen in Boise, Idaho USA kind of makes your post look foolish. I also believe that Danner is a very experienced promoter having done numerous events.

There was an awesome photo of the knockout in one of the American mags at the time. It actually showed a band of energy around the impact area; it was quite remarkable.

RJJ might take it as JC fight will offer him money and glory and that will fuel RJJ's ego.
This other sideshow will only ridicule the Yank and I can't see it bringing big bucks in .
If he has some decent advice he should go for this circus tho cause JC will hurt him

I see where Danner is involved in a Salt Lake City event with Mesi. Tua and Greenberg. That is quite a card. It seems that there is new promotional blood in the game.

There was talk of him fighting Vassily Jirov when he was The Man at 190, but it never came off because Roy Stepped up to face Ruiz, Tony beat Jirov and then Ry stepped back down after being called out in the most emphatic manner by Tarver.

Anyway, Hopkins, according to Dan Rafael, wants Calzaghe next. Perhaps a one for February.
