Golovkin: Chavez Fight Was Boring, Canelo Didn't Want To Finish

Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) admits he was bored while sitting ringside and watching Saul "Canelo" Alvarez pound away on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

There were countless rounds where Chavez Jr. barely threw any meaningful punches and appeared to be more interested in lasting the distance.

In the opinion of Golovkin, Canelo did not do enough to close the show - which in turn allowed Chavez Jr. to survive and disappointed a sold-out crowd and thousands who purchased the pay-per-view for as much as $70 bucks.

Golovkin said to the Los Angeles Times, “[Saturday] was a little boring, like sparring. Canelo doesn’t want [to finish]. That’s not good for the people. A lot of people bought tickets and the pay-per-view. For what? For a show. Everybody likes drama, like my knockouts. If I see I can beat them, I do.”

Golovkin admits that he was very surprised at the way the fight played out. He expected a repeat of Canelo brutal knockout from last May, when the Mexican superstar headlined at T-Mobile and drilled Amir Khan with a single punch in the sixth round.

“I watch boxing closely. I knew Canelo was going to beat Chavez easy, and I thought he was going to get up there after what he did last year and make another scene, say something like, ‘I did this to Chavez, and I’ll do the same thing to you, Triple-G, ’ ” Golovkin said.

The Canelo-Chavez Jr. bout was boring. It’s really difficult to say otherwise. So he's right about this.

However, I believe that Julio, who is a big guy, was simply in survival mode, as made no effort whatsoever to change his defensive-minded game-plan. He was also in much better physical condition for the Canelo fight than he was when he was stopped by Fonfara.

Sometimes a fighter cannot stop his opponent. It’s a fact of life. It's part and parcel of the sport.

GGG couldn’t stop Jacobs and Canelo couldn’t stop Chavez Jr… and it’s no coincidence that both defeated foes were pretty big guys.

Canelo learned both good and bad lessons from Mayweather. Last Saturday, he demonstrated that he learned to not take risks when he can just coast to victory.

First time I've ever seen Canelo show real needle towards an opponent in the buildup to this. Maybe he wanted the, as he sees it, giant skulking gobshite to have to suffer through 12 rounds or quit on his stool.

I really didn't care if he knocked Chavez out or not... It was a mismatch and he was going to beat the living crap out of him either way... I wasn't a competitive boxing match and Chavez just wanted to survive without getting knocked out again... I wasn't bored because I was expecting a beatdown and that's exactly what it was... I figured Canelo could have knocked Chavez out of he really stepped it up -- but he didn't need to.
