Chavez Jr. says he starved himself for two weeks to make weight for Canelo fight

Post by verlichte »

"Chavez Jr. says he starved himself for two weeks to make weight for Canelo fight"

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. says he wanted to put on a good performance against Canelo but he simply had to drain himself too much.

In an interview with ESPN Deportes, Chavez Jr. talks about the criticism he’s been receiving following his shutout loss.

"Nobody thought that I would make the weight, but that caused me to not have energy. In the last two weeks I ate very little, last week I did not eat almost anything. My mind wanted [to fight] but my body didn’t respond to me. I had condition but not strength. I don’t think the massage [right before the fight - an issue raised by both Nacho Beristain and Memo Heredia] caused my pathetic performance...[it was] undoubtedly the worst performance of my career," Chavez stated.

Chavez Jr. also acknowledged that the he’s deserving of the critical response from fans and that he’s taking it well, but that none of them understand the “superhuman effort” he gave just to make weight — and that he really had to make every sacrifice considering that the penality for coming in over the limit was extraordinarily expensive ($1M per pound).

I know people did not have the show I wanted, when you get into the ring you do not go to lose, I feel bad too, worse than everyone, worse than my fans, but I made a superhuman effort [to make weight]. That's why Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo asked me to get down to that weight, they knew that it was going to kill me. I did not want to fail but it did not work for me, so I can continue to get more criticism...”

Do we even need an article about this? Everybody already knew this before the weigh in.

Plenty. Probably around 8 to 10 Million dollars. A fight with Canelo is the only thing that will ever generate that kinda interest for him again for the rest of his days.

It was fairly obvious from the moment it was announced that this was Junior's cash out fight, the weight stipulation and penalty skewed the fight completely towards Canelo but presumably given recent form they held all the cards in negotiations.

Given how drained he was making 164 it's hard to see Chavez being able to compete below Light-Heavy if he chooses to continue...

It's okay... I didn't pay for the fight... We watched it at a friend's house who's an avid fan. I knew it was a horsesheit match-up and weight. Chavez was riddled with punches non-stop when he fought Fonfara so it wouldn't have made any difference how strong Chavez was -- because Canelo is bigger than Fonfara and his arms are twice the size of Chavez's skinny pipes. Damn he looked weaker than fuhck

Canelo can box 3 times better than Chavez so this ridiculous match-up was as certain a loss for Chavez as any mismatch in Boxing History... Maybe fights like Liston-Patterson were even more unlikely to produce an upset -- but at least Liston was old... He could have suffered a heart attack. Another laugher was Foreman-Frazier... I'm not sure what could have helped Smokin' -- maybe a gun or a hunting knife.

It goes to show how off this kids thinking is. His fight was with the scale and the fight was secondary. He can say all he wants but no one will ever tun in to see that kid fight again I don't think. It's sad because the kid used to be exciting even when taking a beating.

But Nacho shouldn't skate by for coming up with that dumb gameplan. Box from the outside? RIDICULOUS.

Well except Fraizer was a strong favourite, with the bookies at least, against Big George.

He is expected to make $12 million, which is about $5600 per second.

Shoudn't have been so greedy. He could come a couple pounds heavy and pay a couple millions. Nacho also complains that some guy (probably Heredia) gave Jr a massage before the fight which is a big no-no.

I feel ripped off again by Golden Boy  Chavez Jr for the last 4 years struggled to make 168 so when these parasite's offer a son of a Legend BIG $
To come in at 164.5 and get in as a skeleton with no strength to fight back and barely able to defend himself it was bordering on fraud what Golden Boy did it was a very sad and dangerous situation that these maggot's have fucked the hand that fed them again I for one cannot wait for GGG to put an end to these greedy bastard's :yay:
They could have let Jr have a feed before the fight the fan's would have seen a decent fight and Canelo would have certainly still won but not Oscar he needed it to be a skeleton v Canelo before they signed the contract 164.5 what a joke

I hate this type of match up where the opponent starves to make weight,it will end in a death if it carries on.
