Until now, I always thought Hatton never smoked, so what's with the cigarette?

I remember Billy Graham saying he never worked with fighters that smoked. Maybe it was just a one off. I think you have to be a member of Eastside to view the link as well.

Carlos Monzon smoked 40 a day and was never short of puff....it is possible, though I've never heard Hatton was a smoker.

As for whatever else Graham gets up to, I'm not really that bothered, he's a trainer, not an athlete, he's not required to be a paragon of virtue, and let's face it, boxers are hardly known for being the most fastidious trainers or clean livers anyway. Come to think of it, neither are most sportsmen.

Whilst it's never advisable, plenty of athletes have been known to smoke. Monzon, as James mentioned is probably the best boxing example. Johan Cruyff was a 40 a day man, as was 80's football superstar Socrates. Scott Gibbs was known to puff on a few fags after a game for the Lions. Flintoff smokes, or has been known to.

My point is, you think that top-flight sportsmen would never do it, but a lot of them do. For the record, I think the Hatton photo is a posed job with one of Billy's fags, but you never know. Of course, as a smoker myself, maybe I'm just trying to convince myself that I can still be healthy despite the tabs.......

Imagine, if you stopped smoking, you'd put on loads of weight. Just think of it as 'smoking yourself thin', works for me :D

Manuel Madina is another fighter who smoked, whilst not in heavy training at least, but these successful boxers are more the exception than the rule.

Lionel Rose's trainer got him off the smokes by getting him onto a pipe :D When Rose turned up in Japan to fight Harada they couldn't believe their eyes at the sight of a fighter smoking a pipe. The Japanese stared in wonderment as only the japanese can :o
