The WBC light heavyweight division has not had a mandatory defense in a prolonged period of time but for reasons outside the control of our champion, consequently the WBC has decided to order a final elimination bout between WBC International champion Joe Smith vs the NABF champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk with the winner becoming a second mandatory contender of the division.
Tough fight for Joe. After the big Fonfara and Hopkins wins, it doesn't make sense why he should be in another tough fight, 3 in a row, for a chance at a title shot. You have people getting mando shots sitting on their couch doing nothing.
The winner could possibly face Adonis is 2020. If I was Joe, I'd pass on it.

Yup, Joe should go after Pascal or Alvarez to make some money.

Fu-ck Chickenson. If you've no ambition to fight anyone of any note and become better then you don't deserve recognition as a champ. Well done to him, he's beat decent fighters in the past, he's got the belt and he's made his money, but fu-ck him.

WBC is a joke but regardless of the belt this is a great fight. Of course we know who is going to win but at least there is a chance of an upset, Joe can really crack. I have absolutely no desire to see shot Pascal in the ring.

He's fighting Stevenson's mandatory in an absolutely pointless card instead of bitchboy/Alvarez.

In the ideal world Smith would fight Alvarez for mandatory and Chickenson would fight Gvozdyk for the belt.

Adonis will scrap his belt before he fights gvozdyk. "I'm the one true champion. I make the title, the title doesn't make me. I won't be bullied by politics. I'm a warrior and I'll continue to fight the best. Not some novice."

Say what you want about Adonis but he is no moron. Clearly he has seen what this "novice" can do.

If Gvozdyk obliterates Joe Smith in a couple of rounds with ease ( not impossible) then I would not be shocked to see Chickenson retire.
Or at least try and get a fight with pascal in Canada first then retire.
Like this fight a lot though. I rate Gvozdyk and he is being matched right.
I just don't want the winner waiting on Chickenson for a while.
Chickenson has not had a mandatory since Bellew nearly 4 years ago. After the Alvarez fight if successful the WBC better mandate the winner of this quickly. Chickenson hasn't been an active champ and they want the belts active.

I agree. Smith is already in a position where a big money fight could be waiting for him as long as he just keeps winning. A fight like this would only be a setback for his career and his potential future earnings.
