Mickey Vann performance in Earl vs Katsidis, best reffing performance?

Post by TheLeprechaun »

I think this is the best reffing I've ever seen

Katsidis is unbeaten, with a reputation as a puncher and he has Earl hurt a few times. The towel comes in and everyone thinks Earl is done but Vann must have seen something and throws the towel out of the ring. Moments later Earl drops Katsidis badly!

Even putting the WBA's current (I think?) 3 KD rule aside, pretty much no chance Hong would be allowed to continue these days.

But despite all the KDs, Hong always looked to have his mind in tact, just not his legs. Maybe the ref noticed it and sensed that Hong would be able to recoup between rounds. He definitely kept his cool and wasnt eager to jump in to give the hometown guy a win.

I think it's the greatest in fight comeback Ive seen

He might have had some dire nights, but Cortez for Manny vs Marquez I? He helped produce one of the best modern series, when a lesser ref would have stopped that

Vann was a bit fortunate I thought, great call at the end of the day but theres a fine line and Earl landed a bingo shot to nail Katsidis, it could have easily went the other way in the exchange

As i said it proved to be a great call but if Katsidis hurt Earl there and then, Vann would've been slaughtered, small margins eh

Thats what im saying. Imagine Katsidis, who remember has this rep as a big KO puncher, catches Earl clean and hurts him badly. Like really badly where he's on his way to the hospital. It goes down as a monumental f*ck up. Vann took a real risk because he must have seen something nobody else saw. Maybe Earls eyes looked clear or something. He pissed me off in a lot of fights he reffed, but this was a really underrated reffing job if you ask me.

Yeah that comes to mind, especially the way Marquez puts his head back on the canvas after the third knockdown

Frank Cappuccino deserves a mention for Gatti v Ward.

That could have been stopped a number of times, and Lampley was screaming for him to do so in round 9 (I think), but he understood both fighter's reputations and strengths and let it play out in all its beautiful brutality for our ultimate benefit.

Either that, or he was enjoying as much as the rest of us.

Not for me, Earl didn't win the fight and it lead to him taking extra punishment. I always thought Vann shouldn't have assumed he knew Earl better than his corner. Earl had been down 3 times. In his next two fights, he got stopped in the first round. Maybe Earl had struggled in training? Outside of the Romanov fight he was starting to show signs of wear. We don't know but more importantly, neither did Vann.

How about Richie Davies not stopping Thompson against Rothman.

Mitch Halpern in the Ward/Sanchez fight, HBO were calling for it to be stopped and saying it was a complete mismatch.

It's a joke the BBBoC put him out to pasture because of this daft age rule. Considering some of the incompetent buffoons they have officiating just now!

Everyone makes mistakes and it's a thankless task being a ref/judge but it's the same guys making the same mistakes every bloody show over here. It's a fuckin pals act.

As others have said, it is a very fine line and with a puncher it could have easily gone another way.

A sign of a good ref is when you don't notice them, however Mickey fancied himself as that Len off Strictly Come dancing and liked to be seen, and could be a distraction.

I also think that it was a sign of his ego that he threw the towel out. Whatever the rules I don't think that a ref should ever do that as the corner know the boxer much better than he does.

A ref with a big ego is not a good combination, especially in boxing.

Jesus the commentary is ridiculous!
"Sanchez has absolutely nothing to fear here"

"Was that a lucky punch?"

Yeah mate, a perfectly timed, perfectly thrown bodyshot from a fantastic body puncher is total fluke!

I remember that Arthur Mercante Jr. also threw out the towel in Cotto-Foreman...I thought he handled that fight very poorly, and it pissed me off that the HBO crew was acting like he made an awesome call.

So crippled, non-punching Foreman took even more of a beating, and may well have further aggravated his leg injury! Mercante is a hero!

Yep that's a perfect example of what I'm talking about.

Mercante's reasoning was that Foreman was fighting bravely so he deserved the chance to carry on...in spite of the fact that he was losing every round anyway up to that point, and now had a serious leg injury that hindered his movement making the job all the more difficult.

When you see a guy that is clearly injured as Foreman was, and the towel comes in it should be more than understandable why his corner wants the fight stopped.

At any rate, even if it doesn't seem like the right call to you as the ref, you need to assume that maybe the fighters corner knows their man better than you do and if they want the fight stopped, it should be stopped.

What????? It was a dreadful performance he cost earl the fight by issuing a count to katsidis when neither his hands or knees touched down . Katsidis was out on his feet and vann decided to give him a standing 8 count which is not allowed in pro boxing

Best Reffing ever or sticking to the rules?

The towel came during the round thats why Micky Vann kicked it back out.. The referee can only stop the fight while in action The corner can only stop the fight during the Minute rest...
