Snipes was an awkward fighter. He had some ability. He could punch, but wasn't aggressive enough. He had some good performances, but the lost to Evangelista was embarrassing. The judges didn't seem to like him.

Well their quarrel was well know.....maybe it was money? Seems like it would have been able to have been sold.

Snipes was big and strong with minor athletic ability, but dumb as a slug. Other Heavyweights didn't respect Rufus and that's why Holmes got hit.

You need to respect all your opponents... They can all hurt you...possibly nail you with a Rahman type punch even if they can't box worth a shiitt.

But it was very difficult to respect Snipes. He was so dumb. Frank Scott was a tough guy who never learned how to box very well. He wasn't big or strong. He could take a good shot and was a bright kid. If he had any work ethic or ambition he could have had some success. He only had 16 fights when they matched him with Snipes. The contempt he showed for Snipes had me laughing. He tried to walk through Snipes, called him names, and kept trying to knock him out. He fought a super dumb fight and nearly won. They called it a draw because even judges didn't respect Snipes.

Just because a guy has a low IQ doesn't mean he can't hurt you. If Frank used his brain he would have won that fight. Cobb probably would have beaten Snipes, even though Tex was a really poor boxer -- like Chuvalo beat Quarry -- if you're fighting a dummy, just keep throwing punches. Eventually you'll hit him. Quarry was actually a bright kid, but from watching some of his fights you'd never guess it. Mentally, some talented kids don't see themselves as champions.

I've never heard of the Snipes/Cobb quarrel. Renaldo would be a big favorite.

I have seen some youtube videos of Tex belittling him in public, and some stories on the West Coast Boxing thread that flesh out what it was all about.

They seemed to push each other's buttons and go after each other in public settings for a while.....maybe in anticipation of a fight? but it never took place.

Ya think?

Another common explanation, is one fighter knowing full well it would be a good payday for both, but they want to deny the opportunity to the other out of spite.

Tex said what he said, in my humble opinion, to ratchet up the interest perhaps? In his own self interest.

Not sure Snipes had the intelligence to appreciate the humor or the sensibility.

There are a few folks like that out there.

I'm not sure Tex really disliked anyone....but he did enjoy the ride, and using both self deprecating humor and on some occasions humor at the expense of others.

There are a few folks like that out there.

Snipes and Cobb would have been an interesting encounter. Snipes would win if his head was on right, but Cobb could take it if Snipes wasn't on point.Shame Cobb didn't go after Cooney, that could have been a strong win for him.

Tex Cobb said, "I"ll fight Gerry Cooney for 25 cents and a blow job."

I don't think Snipes was afraid of Cobb. But Snipes was the kind of Heavyweight you disrespected his ability. He looked so bad. Like Scott Frank when he had 16 fights. He thought he was going to murder Snipes and disrespected him so bad he had me laughing. The only reason Holmes got caught is he had such a low opinion of Snipes. I think Cobb took one look at Snipes---particularly if Snipes was moving his lips at the time---and he saw lunch.

But sometimes you get to the lunch counter and the menu isn't exactly what you expected... and a right hand comes over.
