Are you guys serious? Only 3 current heavyweights I can imagine competing in that era. Povetkin (current), Klitschko, and Fury. Everyone else would not be good competitors. AJ struggled with an old Klitschko, and I'd think AJ would get decapitated in that era.

To be honest, i see no difference. In terms of skills.

Ali better than joshua.
Klitschko better than liston.
Ortiz better than frazier.
Patterson better than povetkin.

Povetkin is the only one with a prayer.
I have to disagree. PEDvetkin maybe, but not Povetkin.

good post but I think Povetkin beats Patterson and Joshua could be too big too strong for even the young 60s Ali

Patterson was not better than Povetkin... He'd be gone in the 1st like he was with 6'1" X 214 Liston.

Ali was not better than Joshua... He'd have his jaw shattered like he did with the China-chinned Norton (who was knocked cold by 188-pound JL Garcia)

I hate to say this, but some of the heavyweights of the modern era would likely possess the capability of defeating the best heavyweights competing forty years or so ago, due to them being much bigger (several inches taller & 40lbs+ heavier), coupled with sporting advances in modern training techniques, medications and nutrition.

What I’ve said is obviously controversial in nature, since nostalgia compels many people to perceive the golden age of heavyweight boxing (which is the 1970’s) through rose-tinted glasses, with the fighters that competed during that era universally regarded as immortal demigods, but if you’re able to consider the situation objectively, then my stance cannot possibly be considered as unreasonable.
You are right. Height weight matters in the heavyweight division and the top eould beat those atg who would look like cruiserweights next to them.

Better in terms of skills. All top 4 heavyweights of todays beat those old atg hw because of weight and height, simply much bigger, more power

Height and reach matters. It's why Fraudweather ducked Paul Williams.

Pw and margarito. Both very tall, long reach, aggressiv with good power & both prime around 2008. What did floyd during that time do? Took over 1 year vacation hahaha...

Maybe Floyd didn't want Paul Williams particularly -- but I don't see Williams beating Floyd because he couldn't jab worth a damn.

Margarito was a cheater... After he was defanged and his plastered wraps confiscated -- Shane Mosley smashed him out like an unskilled punk.. Strange that Margo couldn't knock out a single soul after his "Master of Plaster" technique was uncovered... He was brutalized.

But Floyd did duck Brook, Thurman, and Porter in favor of the easily beaten Andre Berto ... who Floyd couldn't even stop.

Hi Kalan,

I noticed you said you used to compete as a Heavyweight. Do you have some connection to Ali, perhaps you sparred or fought someone who sparred one of Ali's sparring partners or some such. What was your record? I notice that you like to exaggerate fighters. For example, you said Anthony Joshua was a defensive genius in the realm of mayweather and Whitaker prior to his fight with Wlad. Also it seems you are exaggerating how easy it was to beat Ali and how "feather fisted" he was. When you fought, did you often overestimate and then at times underestimate your opponents. Did you find yourself being outsmarted In the ring more times than not?

Please answer.
Kalan has never boxed. He'll also be insulted that you dated compare Whitaker's weak defensive skills in the same breath as Joshua.

Very different beasts the guys from today compared to that era. It's hard to make comparisons as the modern day heavies are so much bigger. Back in the day they were no doubt tougher and fought a lot more thus gaining more experience and skill. Nowadays the top guys fight twice a fuckin year! That's all weights more or less.

Williams would have shut out Floyd EASILY. Williams was Floyd's worst nightmare a tall busy lefty who threw tons of varied punches. Floyd had nothing to bother or hold off Williams. Absolutely easy win for Paul. Margarito had Floyd terrified as you can see in those you tube videos. For whatever reason Floyd was terrified of Margarito and wanted nothing to do with him using tons of absurd excuses to keep ducking him through 2006 when Arum was pushing for the fight heavily. The one video Floyd practically sha7 his pants when Margarito confronted him in his face. Williams got screwed because Haymon wanted to keep floyd undefeated and thus he knew not to force Floyd to face Williams. Williams being a quiet humble yes sir type guy played along with what Haymon wanted but it's pretty damned obvious Williams would have had a field day using target practice on lil floyd.

The problem with Paul Williams was he had zero charisma and zero star power - he was not a long term face of boxing type star like Haymon deemed Floyd to be. Haymon used Paul as a throwaway pawn but not as an ace in the hole. Paul at 147 was one of the ATG welters though history won't properly remember him that way.

You're dreaming with Paul Williams... I never thought Williams could box or would beat anybody good.. Paul had no stance, footwork, jab, or defense.. Lara beat the crap out of Paul when Lara had only 14 fights.. I don't give a damn what those fkking corrupt judges said.. All 3 judges were suspended by a corrupt boxing commission because everybody knew it was a corrupt, fixed decision.. The commissioner said "The judging result was bad -- but the officials are all sincere, honest, dedicated professionals who had an off night" WTF?? An OFF night??? GTFOOH they were all sitting there scoring the fight and knew EXACTLY what they were doing -- giving the fight to Williams... Dan Goosen paid them off and paid the commissioners to appoint them.. It just cannot be proven because some crooks cover their tracks very well.

Williams DID beat Margarito -- who was such a terrible boxer he couldn't even beat Dan Santos.. Floyd had no fear of Margo because the man had ZERO skills

Floyd DID duck Kell Brook and Keith Thurman.. Both have very good basic boxing skills, very tough, with terrific punching power.. Williams was quick, but wide open. Mayweather would force Paul back, beat him up, and shut him out -- where Thurman and Brook were threats to beat Floyd.

Kalan. Please stop. U make 0 sense.

Why did floyd take 1 year vacation, when there was good money on the table lots of fans wanted him against prime margarito? Sometimes skills are overrated. True, marga wasnt a very skilled boxer. But he was in his prime tall strong powerful aggressiv puncher relentless with great chin. If prime marga would have been such an easy opponent than why didnt he just take the 8 mill and easily ud him? Because he knew it would have been no easy night. Why? Floyd loves to control the speed, the routine of the fight and with aggressiv relentless opponents like castillo, maidana or margarito he doesnt control nothing bevause they fight how they want to fight and thats coming at you from 1-12 round!

Prime casamayor
Prime tszyu
Prime margarito
Prime williams
Prime pacquiao

He wanted nothing from those guys and either took vacations or 1000000 excuses not to fight the guy or just ignored the fans wish.

You're not being serious with some of those clowns... Look what Mosley did to a much younger, prime Margarito... Beat Margo every round and smashed him out - easy as pie.. Casamayor was a dog who had life and death with an easily punched Corrales... Shiitt Man Hatton beat the easily countered Tszyu... Williams had nothing for Floyd... Pacquiao was a guy Mayweather avoided early but eventually made easy work of him... Pacquiao was a little bitty guy.. Doubtful he could ever beat Floyd... You can bash Floyd for fighting Berto instead of Brook or Thurman -- but to be bash him just to be bashing him is ridiculous.

Styles make fights. Prime or non prime means something.

Prime tszyu easily stopped a guy, where floyd had huge problems and was close to losing the fight on points. I am talking about judah.

Past prime old tszyu lost to hatton.

Castillo beat floyd. Casamayor and margarito are in the same league as castillo, if not better.

I have no problem with floyd not wanting to fight thurman or brook. Floyd was past prime and those guys the new generation. My problem is when floyd was prime his unwillingness to tesz himself against other top boxers in their prime, cotto.pac.marga etc......all avoided.

The most important thing in boxing is prime vs prime. Thats why i want spence crawford or ggg canelo now and not in 6 years!! Floyd did not respect that rule.
