Floyd Mayweather
Floyd Mayweather
Great fighter, terrific career. Pretty obnoxious at times, funny other times, but did what he had to do to sell a fight as his choice of fighting style was a draw in its own right, broadly speaking
As a promoter...
Too much limelight imo. Eddie Hearn takes criticism that he takes the spot light of his fighters at times, getting in on interviews etc. Mayweathers on another level. If he's not fighting, I'd rather hear from the guys that are fighting. The build up for the Walsh fight, he needs to let it go and let the fighters thrash it out

I do wish people would realize Mayweather is retired.boxing_rocks wrote:I thought this was a Current Scene forum.
Even if he fights the bs matchup with Connor.
It's not a real fight it's a side show attraction.
Mayweather is retired
Re: Floyd Mayweather
I agree but I only make reference about his behaviour as a promotertiny_acres wrote:I do wish people would realize Mayweather is retired.boxing_rocks wrote:I thought this was a Current Scene forum.

Re: Floyd Mayweather
Like Hearn...his antics as a promotor are all part of the show; they add column inches (or digital equivalent) which equals more money.
Hearn does come across as a bit arrogant, but he certainly plays up to the pantomime role for effect; it is just a character he plays...same as Mayweather.

Re: Floyd Mayweather
I think he takes over too much though. It's the fighters time
Re: Floyd Mayweather
You're right.. You need to let your Fighter do all the talking and display his personality. Don't steal the limelight from him. You're not the Fighter.
Have your boxers talk about exactly who they want to fight next.. Exactly what their plans are.. Fans want to know where you're going and when you plan to get there.. Don't spend much time on the interviewers questions. Everybody saw tonight's fight.
"When did you think you had him in trouble?" ... "At the opening bell. We knew we were gonna knock him out. That's why I want Jack Fontaine next. He's been running from me for over a year and fighting 2nd raters. That's a great fight all the fans want to see. I'm ready. We've also been trying to open negotiations with Mike Striker, but they're having a hard time returning our calls. I want to stay busy. I had sparring sessions harder than this fight so I only want the top guys. Guys who can hang. Any promoter out there who can put great fights together -- we're willing to listen and do a split.. Next question."

Re: Floyd Mayweather
You do have a point, but the fact remains is that some boxers superficially don’t appear to have much of a personality when interviewed by the media. They need a lot of help to sell their bouts… and I’m thinking of the likes of Terence Crawford and Katie Taylor.Ossyrules wrote:Great fighter, terrific career. I’m not really criticising them, since I feel that their handling of the media will improve over time, so it’s often up to their charismatic promoters to help “put cheeks on seats.”
Not all fighters have strong personalities like Tony Bellew, Chris Eubank Jr., David Haye etc.
So whilst it’s true that the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Bob Arum, Oscar De La Hoya, Kathy Duva and Eddie Hearn often overshadow their fighters when interviewed by the media, it should be deemed as a necessary evil rather than something that should be deeply criticised.
Re: Floyd Mayweather
I agree with you both (kalan and EO)
Without going into too much detail I just think he goes too far on the spectrum where it's him talking over his fighters

Re: Floyd Mayweather
He brings more attention to the fight. I don't see him being any different than the other guys.
Re: Floyd Mayweather
I'm not averse to a promoter promoting a fight and stepping it up where needed. Like Danny Jacobs coach (name escapes me) for the Saunders fight vs the Georgian...
But give a guy like gervonta a chance on the mic, or is he a bad talker? I heard way more from May on the build up and he wasn't fighting
I'll confess I do find him a quite annoying character, brilliant boxer though. Maybe I'm biased on this one

I haven't met Davis but I read somewhere that he doesn't like to talk much. I don't watch pressers or anything. Floyd annoys me too, but as a promoter he matches his guys pretty tough and genuinely seems to care about them.
