Cotto vs. Kamegai Set For August 26, With Golden Boy, on HBO
Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs), the only four-division world champion in the rich boxing history of Puerto Rico, will return to the ring on Saturday, August 26 to take on the always-exciting Yoshihiro "El Maestrito" Kamegai (27-3-2, 24 KOs) in a 12-round match for the vacant WBO Junior Middleweight World Championship from the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. Cotto will attempt to secure a sixth world championship in four weight classes as he makes his 23rd appearance on HBO.
"I'm very excited to be back and showcase a high level fight for the fans," Cotto said. "Kamegai is a great, tough fighter, but I will be ready for him and to capture the world title. I can't wait to start training for this fight and get back in the ring on August 26."
"August 26 will mark the return of Miguel Cotto pursuing his sixth world title," said Hector Soto, Vice President of Miguel Cotto Promotions. "Cotto vs. Kamegai will be another epic battle that promises fireworks in the ring between Puerto Rico and Japan. Miguel Cotto is back on the big stage of boxing, fighting in Los Angeles on HBO. Nobody can miss it."
Cotto vs. Kamegai, a 12-round fight for the vacant WBO World Junior Middleweight Championship, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions in association with Teiken Promotions and sponsored by Tecate "BORN BOLD". The event will take place Saturday, August 26 at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. and will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing.

Bit of a pointless excersise for Cotto at this stage of his career.

So I guess as long as they have one star fighter they can just pull a ranking for a guy like Kamegai out of their ass anytime to fill a title vacancy huh?
Meaningless fight, and considering this is now the 2nd year in a row this title has been fought for in a hastily put together vacant title fight it's definitely become a meaningless title. I mean it was already, but it's gotten even more watered down.

By the time Cotto steps foot into the ring against Kamegai he would have been inactive for more than one year and nine months.Stuarty30 wrote:Bit of a pointless excersise for Cotto at this stage of his career.
If it’s the Puerto Rican’s penultimate bout, since he’s supposed to retire by the end of the year, it not only allows him to rid himself of any ring rust against a very beatable opponent, but it also provides the opportunity to become a world champion again.
He should then be in the ideal position to end his career by engaging in one final highly-lucrative bout against the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan or perhaps even Kell Brook.

Rafael mentions that Lemieux-Cotto is a big possibility should Miguel win this

I'd have to see Cotto's current form before agreeing with that. And even still, not sure the Cotto that fought Opie would be able to deal with David. But it would be a great fight.

I am wondering how much money Cotto is getting. HBO does not have enough money for Golovkin and Kovalev, but they found it for Cotto.

David is vastly overrated, Cotto would toy with him.Impractical Poster wrote:SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Nice showcase for Cotto.crusader wrote:Rafael mentions that Lemieux-Cotto is a big possibility should Miguel win this

Which they didn't want to spend on Golovkin vs Jacobs or Kovalev vs Ward, but decided to spend on Cotto's likely last fight ???SaadOffTheDeck wrote:LOL, HBO has plenty of money.boxing_rocks wrote:I am wondering how much money Cotto is getting. Yes, boxing is a poor investment in America.boxing_rocks wrote:Which they didn't want to spend on Golovkin vs Jacobs or Kovalev vs Ward, but decided to spend on Cotto's likely last fight ???SaadOffTheDeck wrote:LOL, HBO has plenty of money.boxing_rocks wrote:I am wondering how much money Cotto is getting.
