Keith Thurman Undergoes Elbow Surgery, Expected to Miss at Least 6 Months

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Welterweight boxing champion Keith Thurman announced Friday that he will miss six months after undergoing surgery on his right elbow.

According to ESPN.com's Dan Rafael, Thurman said the surgery was successful and preached the importance of taking a cautious approach to his return:
"One thing for sure, the doctor doesn't want me to rush back into action. You can't jump back into the race too soon. It might start to feel good after a month or two, but you don't want to rush it. My right elbow's job is to launch punches like a missile. It might feel good, but it might not be able to sustain that. It might cause inflammation to develop, and then you have to wait to let it calm down and feel better. I figure a four-month recovery will be quick. The doctor recommended six months of no action before training. I won't rush it."
Thurman said the elbow injury caused him pain entering the bout against Garcia:

"I had loose bodies in the elbow, similar to what baseball pitchers have. They had to go in and take out the loose bodies and calcium deposits. It was getting in the way of the hinging of the elbow and when I threw a punch. It was causing pain and inflammation. I noticed it before the Danny Garcia fight. There was no way to get rid of it without the surgery. I'm healing and getting the function back so that I can be pain free."

While Thurman expressed hope that he could potentially fight later in 2017, he acknowledged that his next contest may not take place until 2018.

Smart way to postpone beating by Spence. Next year, Keith will have a couple warmups, so Spence may move to 154.

So that'll be 2 years in a row in which Thurman only fights once. Very frustrating considering he's a very good fighter and seems willing to fight the best. Needs to be more active, these are his prime years.

It's unfortunate but injuries happen.

I rate brook above Thurman but I can't criticise who he fights as he fights decent opponents consistently imo. Saying having elbow surgery to duck spence is pure ignorance

Brook better than Thurman?

On what basis?

To be clear if I had to rank the welterweights I put Thurman at 1, as he's got the best record, Kell brook other than Porter, his record is light.

So whilst brook still has some to prove, I actually think he's better than Thurman and would beat him if they fought.

It's all quite unlikely as I don't see brook being at 147 long if any fights after spence

I could be wrong, but couldn't they do arthroscopic surgery to take care of Thurman's elbow? If so, 6 months is a long time to be out for that.

I'm gutted about that.

The WW division was coming together nicely & now this happens.

Thurman is a top fighter who is willing to fight the best & now he's going to be sidelined.

I can see the ABC boys making him a MegaSuperGod Champion & making his 'regular' belts available for pretenders to duke it out & call themselves champ in the meantime until he returns.

This is not the NBA. Everything that scores involves impact.

Really doesn't change his schedule much.

Good point. He has been fighting once every 11 months or so for years.

Ring rust could kill Thurman when he faces Errol Spence... I'm talking as if Spence has already beaten Brook, but I just feel he will... This doesn't hurt the division that much because Spence could fight Shawn Porter later this year.. That would be one Hell of a fight as well.

Kell brook said he'd like to have 1 more fight after spence at 147 while he's still trim, to get Thurmans belts and then move up

He needs to focus on Spence... I wouldn't look a micron past this fight -- which could be the toughest match he'll ever have.
