Sanchez: Golovkin Will Wear Canelo Down By Eight or Ninth

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Abel Sanchez, trainer of IBO, WBA, WBC, IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs), expects his fighter to wear down Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) by the eight or ninth round.

Against Canelo, Sanchez is expecting the Mexican superstar to do well in the early going with his rapid hand speed and combination punching. As the fight plays out, Sanchez predicts that his boxer will wear down Canelo, round by round, until the challenger is ready to go or simply survives until the final bell.

"I think that early on the speed of Canelo and the combination punching that he does, but while he’s punching in those combinations, he’s going to get caught in between. Both guys are going to hit each other, that’s a given. I think in between those punches that Canelo’s throwing, eventually by the third or fourth round he will be getting caught in the middle of those and get hurt," Sanchez told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.

"I think when Canelo hits Golovkin and he can’t hurt him, it will be a totally different mindset for the corner. We as trainers are going to have to be on our P’s and Q’s and make sure that we have the answer for whatever the other side is doing. I think eventually past the eight or ninth round, Golovkin will have worn him down enough to either stop him or win the last few rounds and a decision."

Didn't I get aggressively lambasted by many members of this forum for suggesting pretty much the same thing that Abel Sanchez said?

When was this?

Maybe it means more, because it came from Abel himself.

Abel Sanchez's comments carry value, whereas mine do not, even when we say precisely the same thing.

It is what it is.

Sanchez prediction is kinda how I see it, except a round or so later.

So I voted somewhat

I'd honestly take the opinion of some random poster over someone as involved as Sanchez. Of course he thinks his fighter will win.

Agreed, but the issue relates to the level of outrage I received not the fact that my opinion is deemed less "worthy" than Sanchez's.

Whilst Abel's prediction is entirely reasonable, I feel that Canelo is a better counter puncher than Golovkin, whereas Sanchez is suggesting that the Mexican will actually be the one initiating the exchanges, but will be punished with counters thrown by GGG.

Sanchez is also under the assumption that Canelo cannot possibly hurt GGG, but whilst I don't think the Mexican carries enough power to knockdown Golovkin with a single shot, Alvarez will almost certainly gain Gennady's respect in this area and will force the Kazakh to become defensively responsible.

It's important to note that Sanchez's claims about how GGG will handle Canelo, actually conflicts with Golovkin's actions against Jacobs.

GGG remained competitive in that fight mainly due to his marvellously powerful and accurate jab, but whenever the American returned fire by throwing a flurry of combination punches in quick succession, Gennady simply covered up... he did not counter. Instead, the Kazakh regrouped and then continued to apply relentless pressure with his excellent jab as his primary weapon.

Therefore, we could see a situation whereby Canelo simply waits for Golovkin to initiate the exchanges, with the Mexican attempting to counter GGG's blows with his eye-catching combos.

Golovkin holds advantages over Canelo, such as size, power and durability.

Alvarez's strengths relate to his superior defence, his fast hands, his counter-punching and his aesthetically-pleasing textbook combinations.

I feel that both fighters possess fantastic jabs and excellent footwork.

Whilst GGG deserves to be the huge favourite over Canelo, Sanchez's assertion that Alvarez cannot possibly hurt Golovkin is a dangerous one, which is compounded by the likelihood that the Mexican may instead be solely focussed on gaining a decision victory rather than aiming for a stoppage win.

Canelo may not even be slightly bothered about his inability to hurt Golovkin, as long as he's able to keep putting the rounds in the bag, since he only needs to win seven of them (without incurring point deductions due to penalties or knockdowns, whilst also avoiding being stopped).

I can only assume that Abel Sanchez and Gennady Golovkin will inevitably cater for this possibility, since it would be extremely naïve of them to “place all their eggs in one basket” by only looking to score the knockout, which should not be considered a certain eventuality.

Sanchez is just hyping his fighter. At 35, GGG has slowed down. Not saying he's shot-to-$hit but he's not anymore at his peak of his game.

Sanchez is predicting the perfect world scenario. In the perfect world his fighter will do as he expects. Of course it's easier said than done. GGG isn't getting any younger. As the days pass by Canelo's chances improve.

Aggressively lambasted for suggesting that GGG would wear him down? That Canelo might score with combos early?

What exactly?

Canelo has certainly improved: just 2 years ago he'd be getting stretchered out against GGG. He's peaking at the right time.

These days GGG is a bit more measured, and a lot easier to hit. I can't believe he's been playing possum for his last two fights just to get this fight. If he was against Jacobs, then did he know something we didn't, i.e. points victory already in the bag!?

Canelo will be looking to take 7 rounds out of the full twelve. Unless GGG dominates every round, he will lose the fight via scorecard. Fighters with Golovkin's style are usually done by their late 20's. He is an exception, but not superhuman.

I wouldn't take Sanchez seriously. A great trainer should also be a great tactician. I don't see any evidence of that in Abel Sanchez. In fact I can't think of many trainers who could tactically turn losing fights around. The ever encouraging Angelo Dundee, and Richie Giachetti (Holmes) are the only ones I can think of who had that relationship with their fighters.

Golovkin has aged, but so has Canelo; he looked slower and bloated vs Chavez. His cement feet won't allow him to escape Golovkin's jab. There's a chance Gennady gets a cuts stoppage, as he's certainly going to bust him up with the jab.

And even if Canelo makes it somehow to the end, I don't see the judges robbing Gennady for a pizza face beaten foe.
