Kell Brook confirms he broke his eye socket in Errol Spence Jr defeat
Kell Brook has confirmed he suffered a broken eye socket in Saturday's defeat to Errol Spence Jr at Bramall Lane in Sheffield.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Brook said: "They kept me in until about 3am. I had a CT scan on my eye and the eye is broken again, same as the Golovkin one, so, maybe surgery again.
I'm devastated. I knew from round seven that the eye had gone and progressively as the rounds went on. I tried to get through the fight and it kept going double-vision and then coming back into line.
"In the later rounds 10 and 11, especially 11th round, it stuck there and that's why I went down on one knee and I remember the surgeon saying to me after the Golovkin fight if you would have gone another round or so you could be blind so I've got that going through my mind as well.
"I'm in my own city, I'm in Sheffield. I wear my heart on my sleeve. There were many things going through my mind but I remember thinking I live to fight another day."
Considering his future, Brook admitted he must now move up in weight as he stressed the difficulty of competing at the highest level at welterweight.
"I think the time is now maybe to move up. I've been making welterweight since I was a teenager. My first fight I was about nine or ten.
"I went up to middleweight in my last fight, I put a lot of muscle on and it was so hard to get to welterweight."

Re: Kell Brook confirms he broke his eye socket in Errol Spence Jr defeat
What do we conclude from that? Very bad luck with the socket or not enough healing time after the hammering from GGG?
Quite shocking the way Brook started running out of gas so early. I was hoping that he was pacing himself a little, but it was obvious that it was his bravery keeping him going.
Not impressed with Ingle and co at all. A couple of more months would not have hurt Kell. Look how long Amir Khan's been out. I don't think rest hurts unless you get badly out of shape (or you're Roberto Duran).

Re: Kell Brook confirms he broke his eye socket in Errol Spence Jr defeat
He may want to consider retirement. If he moves up in weight, his opponents will be punching harder.
Re: Kell Brook confirms he broke his eye socket in Errol Spence Jr defeat
It's a tricky situation now, if he takes a long lay off to make sure that eye is healed 100% will he be able to compete at the championship level again when they all know about that weakness and will likely target the eye more.
Alternatively he could just go to fight established names like Collazo or Berto or it could be an ideal time to chase another world title held by Pacquiao or Peterson that would make good competitive fights but both of them will know the same trick and target that weak eye.
If that eye isn't 100% or is becoming a constant weakness then it might be time to call it a day, no point in fighting on if it causes him to go blind in one eye and risks further damage to him in the long run. He's a proven champion who's fought some of the best, He's earned whatever he decides to do.

Re: Kell Brook confirms he broke his eye socket in Errol Spence Jr defeat
I wonder if the bone around the left eye suffered miniscule fractures in the Golovkin fight, not enough to shatter but leave a lasting weakness. I'm sure Brook had faced hard hitters before, but going to war with GGG wasn't brave, it was reckless. Fighters like GGG and Pavlik before him seemed to do real damage with every blow.Ruthless-RKO wrote:It wasn't the same eye though..Thomastearns wrote:What do we conclude from that? Can't recall it happening twice to the same fighter. All the best to Kell in the future.
Re: Kell Brook confirms he broke his eye socket in Errol Spence Jr defeat
Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't it be rather difficult to put on a lot of muscle in the 7 weeks he had to prepare for GGG? Not sure if I would call it an excuse or an outright lie. He struggles to make 147, but so does Spence, Thurman, and others.Ruthless-RKO wrote:Kell Brook has confirmed he suffered a broken eye socket in Saturday's defeat to Errol Spence Jr at Bramall Lane in Sheffield.

Brook can move up and be successful, as long as he avoids the top guys there. He could fight Vanes M., maybe Trout, or an aging Cotto. I would bet Trout would beat him though. He should stay away from Lara, Andrade, and Jermell Charlo.

Should have been enough time to heal, and bone heals back harder.Thomastearns wrote:I wonder if the bone around the left eye suffered miniscule fractures in the Golovkin fight, not enough to shatter but leave a lasting weakness. If not an excuse, I'll call it an outright lie then. In seven weeks Brook had to lose about 15 pounds, train, spar, etc. He would need more like 7 months to put on a lot of muscle. Its not like the fight was planned for months.Ossyrules wrote:It's not an excuse, he gave spence big compliment saying he was possibly the best guy he'd ever faced. I wish his trainer Ingle offered a little credit to Spence instead of sour grapes. Here are a few of his quotes:
"I think it was a harder fight Kell vs. Shawn Porter. I think Shawn Porter was a much harder fight,”said Ingle.
“In the first 6 rounds, I thought Kell was in front of by 3 or 4 rounds."
"He's not the best fighter in the world...he's no Floyd Mayweather."

Put your line in the sand about what your problem is then I'll come back to you. Don't change what you're complaining about (brook quote now ingle) etc. Every interview I've heard from brook he's given spence credit, and of course he's going to analyse his own situation and where he goes next. Simpletons are so quick to bitch about 'excuses' when it's just a fighter being honest about their situation, with no intention to discredit their opponent.
Has Brook said anything like 'Spence only won because I was drained'? Perhaps at this point in his career he really would have an easier time making 154, and hence, with his title gone, it makes sense for him to move up now?

Haven't caught the ingle interview yet so to be truthful I can't say if it lacked respect. Spence was very good especially away from home so deserves itBadhusker wrote:Ossyrules wrote:Put your line in the sand about what your problem is then I'll come back to you. Sour GrapesIt reminds me of the GGG fight. The weight, the eye. he was doing good for a while... At least Brook pays Spence compliments, but have not heard any from Ingle other than Spence was the fresher fighter.
But be realistic, it's pretty damn unlucky to have 2 broken sockets on the bounce. Golovkin and spence caused the injury through punches so I don't mean unlucky in that sense, but you know what I mean

Re: Kell Brook confirms he broke his eye socket in Errol Spence Jr defeat
According to online sources the average age for orbital bone injuries is 30.
Kell Brook was absolutely right to 'take a knee' when he did. All kinds of things can go wrong with the eyeball/optic nerve if the damage continues. The swelling can't protect against further impact.
Spence reminded me of Gerald McClellan in that his power comes from aligning up his shots. Not a huge natural puncher but a good technical one. You can see him constantly getting onto position to set up his shots.
Once Brook was immobile he was always in great danger. Boxing is a brutal sport, but it doesn't have to be a tragic one.

Muscle can most certainly be built in a seven week period simultaneously with the process of losing weight. What constitutes "a lot of muscle in the seven weeks" is open to interpretation based on circumstances.
7 weeks is plenty of time to lose 15 or so pounds while building muscle for a body accustomed to having to lose 28 pounds. That extra muscle is a lot relative to the body's previous regimen. Returning to the previous regimen would not be successful for the obvious reason that muscle mass has been added.
Factor in the recovery time for the injury and you have a very tricky training problem to solve returning to welter to face Spence Jr.
I would recommend that Brook cash out with Khan following full recovery. Then, if the desire to compete still exists, start with a euro level 154 pounder.Brook can move up and be successful, as long as he avoids the top guys there. Building a lot of muscle while losing 15 pounds in 7 weeks, while training, sparring, etc? Get a grip. It is total bullshit, and an excuse for making 147 afterwords. Body builders work months and months to build pounds of muscle, and a lot of them have the help of steroids. The whole story would be much more believable without the big lie about putting on all kinds of muscle. Basically he had to lose less weight, so it seemed like he had more muscle. You don't add all kinds of muscle when you are cutting weight.
Re: Kell Brook confirms he broke his eye socket in Errol Spence Jr defeat
The next load of BS I will hear is that if it wasn't for the eye injurys, Brook would have beat both Spence and GGG.

Some people are born with brittle hands. Given the fact that Kell suffered 2 similar injuries to different eyes in consecutive fights, it's a pretty good bet that Kell's eye sockets are not capable of absorbing too much punishment.Ruthless-RKO wrote:It wasn't the same eye though..Thomastearns wrote:What do we conclude from that? I realize that GGG and Spence are 2 of the hardest hitters Brook ever fought but IMO he needs to see a facial bone specialist before fighting again and find out if it's worth the risk.

There is talk about osteoporosis triggered by steroid use.
Re: Kell Brook confirms he broke his eye socket in Errol Spence Jr defeat
This is not about excuses, it is about reality. You continue to focus on relative terms; "a lot of muscle." What does Brook consider "a lot of muscle" related to a training regimen to prepare for a middle weight fight as opposed to a training regimen for a fight for which he must drain 13 more pounds for?Badhusker wrote:,Tanzio wrote:First you ask a question about a relative statement, then you claim it is either "an excuse or an outright lie." It is a fact that muscle can be built while losing 15 pounds in 7 weeks. It is a fact that the training regimen is not the same as one utilized to lose 28 pounds on the same frame.
It makes sense that a fighter who is used to losing 28 pounds to make welter weight would be able to build muscle while losing 15 pounds for middle weight. It simply takes proper planning.
Training can be very focused and individual these days. Detailed integration of training and nutrition allows for specific outcomes.

How fast can muscle be added? It is reasonable to assume that Brook could have gained 3-4 pounds of muscle in 7 weeks.

That may not seem like a lot but in order to accomplish it Brook would have had to alter his normal training regimen significantly. Furthermore, in order for Brook to make 147 again after training to add 3-4 pounds of muscle while making middle weight, it would be necessary to drain even farther than he was previously accustomed to or shed the muscle. That is a tricky equation that most certainly result in less than optimum outcomes.
This is not meant as an excuse for Brook. He made his own choices, and certainly Spence may well have defeated him anyway. It is just pointing out reasons the leap to MW and plummet back down to welter may well have resulted in a weakened Brook, strength and stamina wise.
