Froch's Weight

I was looking at his record and from 2004 to his last fight where he knocked out George Groves in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium he always weighed in at 168 give or take a pound.

Why did he never move up in weight or why didn't he start off as a middleweight ? Is he just a genetic freak in that his fighting weight at 25 years old was the same as it was at 35 or is it testament to his self discipline in really "living the life" between fights or is it peculiar to the 168 division with there being such a big jump from middleweight to supermid ?

He seemed big at 168 too. I imagine he'd be more suited for 175 than, say, GGG would be for 168.

I think he just lived the life and boiled down. He could've moved up but he was big and strong at SMW so that gave him an edge.

In 2015 Froch said he would never fight again and would struggle to make super-middleweight if he did. At that time he was 13.7 stone (189lbs) with only 8% body fat. When there was talk of him coming back to fight GGG Froch suggested they fought at 172lbs so maybe he finally cannot get down to SMW anymore.

I seem to remember McCracken commenting that even out of the gym Froch rarely weighed more than a few pounds above 168; also that he could have boiled down to 160 but wouldn't be the same fighter at that weight.

Well he turned over quite late so wasn't still growing as a pro, plus he fought at 75kg as an amateur at age 25 so isn't that big!

Of course he was a disciplined diligent guy as well which helped :)

Another thing nearly all his fights were title fights so he had to come in on weight :) not many filler fights!

He's a disciplined guy Froch, and a big guy, but I never saw him as a really big super middleweight, and there were never many suggestions during his career that he struggled to make weight

Someone like Callum smith I'd imagine over time will have to go up in weight

It's a weird one I always thought he was a big SMW until
I saw him next to Bute who looked markedly bigger during pre fight press conferences. I'm pretty sure that fighting at his natural fight directly contributed to his impressive stamina and punch resistance. I do wonder what he might have done at 175. The way people talk it's like the LHW division is a bunch of giant borderline cruiserweights but Adonis and Ward, two of the elite, are lads that started at 168, so I think he could have moved up if he did it right. But can't knock the man at all. Since I have been watching boxing seriously, the big guns we have had in this country have been Calzaghe, Hatton, Haye, Froch and now AJ.

Froch was best value for money out of all them, hands down.

He's definitely not a small 168er, he's pretty much spot on for the division really.

168 to 175 doesn't seem like much, but put Froch next to kovalev or beterbiev and I reckon you'd see the guy whose moved up in weight though. You're right re ward and Adonis though. Ward is obviously a special talent, but Adonis has made it work. And pascal has won a wt having moved up

My biggest worry for Froch at 175 would be his lack of guard and defence. I think he'd get clean out by kovalev for example, he'd need slightly pickier match ups at 175

I think Froch realized his potential; excellent and entertaining 168 pound fighter.

Agreed, a rare fighter who fought at his natural weight, was disciplined enough to continue making the weight.

Not a big super middleweight, rather a lean and mean one.

Always fit, and this momentum carried him through some brutal fights, perhaps giving him an edge in his numerous wars.

Doubt he put loads of weight on after weight ins as well.
