Groves and Froch: is it just me...

Post by Deserter »

.... being a sentimental old bugger, but after Groves winning a version of the world title and reading this:

http://www.BS.com/carl-froch-i ... le--117099

I'd love to see them make their peace and become friends. They gave us two great fights and Groves showed real class with his post-fight comments recently, as Carl did applauding him for his win. Would be great in my opinion, after all, Roberto and Sugar Ray got there in the end! :TU:

Don't think Groves will ever be able to get over losing to him. It probably pisses him off just being around Froch because he feels like such a dope for losing.

No way he should have lost to Froch. If he'd boxed the way he boxed against Degale, he'd probably have won 120-108.

With respect Carl Froch rarely turns down a chance for a dig at Groves. I don't mind Froch, but if he's ever talking about the 168ers, I take it with a pinch of salt. The fighters arrogance reappears.

So whilst it's obviously simmered a lot, I do t think it'll be truly buried till they're grey and old

I thought Froch seemed pleased when Groves won the title. I was very surprised actually, though I suppose it helps back up his own legacy but it didn't seem like he meant it in a selfish way. I got that impression from that broadcast that the relationship had thawed somewhat and there was a respect there now. :maybe:

Agree with this.

For me Froch has shown a real lack of class with his constant snidey digs at Groves. He could easily have taken the moral high ground and refused to rub it in safe in the knowledge that the way he knocked him out renders any words between the two of them meaningless but he didn't and that reflects rather badly on him imo.

Froch might justify it by saying he's only mirroring the lack of respect Groves showed him in the build up but that was just typical pre fight nonsense, after you've fought it should be a different story

I think it's pretty clear that the better Groves' resume becomes, the better the chance of a rapprochement. If Groves is sitting there in 5 years time with ten defences, a ton of cash, and a couple of other belts, he and Froch will be fine.

How does Froch get near Groves if Groves is fighting 100% defensively, considering Groves has much faster feet and faster hands and showed he can drop Froch with one punch on the back foot?

I thought Groves thought he could blast Froch onto the back foot and bully him out of it with his explosive power but he didn't take into account Froch was much tougher than he anticipated.

Second fight, same thing and he got caught loading up with left hooks which he was doing all night. He was clearly the better boxer for me, stamina and toughness let him down.

If he comes and fights the degale fight where he is super negative and countering everything with hard shots (couldn't miss Froch with the counter jab over froches jab in the first) then he definitely wins the fight. Booth would have had him fighting exactly like that. Froch was too arrogant and wouldn't have had any answers, certainly in the first fight.

People forget just how limited Froch was.

I think people forget how good Froch was. A concrete chin plus low hands and people seem to have concluded he was no more than a limited hardcase.

In terms of chin, heart and toughness he was unrivaled and that's where he won most of his fights. He lived the life and got the most out of himself. In terms of skills, definitely not top level. He was outboxed by Dirrell, Taylor and Kessler.

Stamina and toughness are part of being 'a good boxer'. Groves couldn't stop an out on his feet Froch. In the first fight, as soon as Froch got his legs back and landed a handful of punches, Groves was gone.

That's not strictly true, either. Froch dodged a bullet in that fight, he knew it and made amends in the rematch.

I don't put toughness and chin and heart down as "skills" so to speak.

They are something you're born with whereas boxing ability and ring IQ are skills you develop.

Plus, if you ask me Groves is 100% tough and has 100% heart. It's just that his 100% is probably 20% of Frochs toughness. Froch could take bombs for 12 and come back. Groves takes bombs and hits the floor. He'll give his life in the ring just like Froch would but genetically his body can't withstand the punishment. At a much lower level khan is similar. You'll never see him quit or give up but he just isn't tough enough to take shots. His heart can't be questioned. Struggling to breathe on the canvas in the Prescott fight and still trying to get up . He's got 100% in the heart department just like Froch and Groves, but hes in single figures in the toughness department by comparison.

What's not true? Groves landed a few crackers early on, then went headhunting knocking a wobbly Froch around but not out...Froch then had him turning away once he caught him a few times.

No, he stumbled, I don't think he turned his back. Who knows how it would have panned out? With hindsight, Froch would probably have done him anyway but he was in deep water for 6 rounds.

Oh seriously deep. He actually was moving like he was underwater, but soon as he got legs...groves didn't want to know.

Froch is a real chippy guy when it comes to Groves. He's so vicious with his criticism. I think he's only toned down because Sky told him to.

I don't even know why the Froch hatred started. It's almost like Groves bashed him up in sparring then fvcked Rachel doggy style, in front of a Kod Froch given his reaction.

Groves is largeky respectful and acts well in the face of confrontation.

I've never really understood the Froch hatred - it goes a lot deeper than a rivalry....

Comes down to Froch ego doesn't it. He sparred Groves and got the best of the spar, dropping Groves in the process and probably easing off.

Groves then becomes mandatory a few years later and starts pointing out how Froch is limited in certain ways and it pissed Froch off because A) he already beat Groves down in sparring and B) he knows what Groves is saying is actually true and he is limited.

Groves can be an annoying twat to deal with I'd imagine, with his snidey comments here and there. I genuinely think Froch thought he'd blast him out of there whenever he wanted. Then he takes a good hiding from Groves before getting the stoppage.

You'd think the conclusive finish in the second fight would have eased Frochs need to get the upper hand and talk down about Groves but it seemingly didn't.

I don't think that's the case. There's something more going on. Froch has never acted like this with any other fighter.... barely criticised his opponent.

I think Groves and Yusuf Mack double teamed Rachel when she was drunk and Froch came back from a late night run and witnessed it through the window
